This schedule comes with a lot of new for Longhorn fans, even with them having just joined the conference last season. Texas and Tennessee have not played since 1968, and the Longhorns have never been to Knoxville.
The SEC announced in August that it will being the nine-game schedule in 2026, with this schedule being the first of its kind in the SEC. The conference has played eight conference games each year since 1992.
Under the new locked-opponents format, Texas will face the Aggies, Sooners and Razorbacks annually before having the remaining six games rotate among the remaining conference schools. The new format will allow each team to play every other SEC program at least once every two years and every opponent home and away in four years.
On top of these rules, each conference team is required to schedule at least one additional high-quality non-conference game from the Big Ten, ACC, Big 12 or Notre Dame. Texas will host Ohio State in Week 2 of 2026, Michigan in 2027, head to Notre Dame in 2028, before hosting the Irish in 2029.
