Texas took care of business in midweek games in 2025

Aside from the ability to keep batters in phase and develop arms for weekend games, midweek games are important because they count toward a team’s overall record. And since they count toward the overall record, they count toward a team’s NCAA Tournament resume.
The Texas Longhorns took care of business in the midweek in 2025, posting a 9-2 record in 11 contests. That’s part of a 20-3 non-conference record for the UT ballclub. It’s no secret that the Longhorns’ current 19-5 SEC record and 39-8 overall mark is what has them in the conversation for the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, but the consistency shown in league play hasn’t been lost by Jim Schlossnagle’s club during the midweek.
Texas’ non-conference midweek slate has been nothing to sneeze at, either. According to the most recent field of 64 projection from On3’s Jonathan Wagner, the Longhorns faced two likely at-large bids in UTSA and UTRGV during the 2025 Tuesday slate. Texas lost to UTSA on March 18 in 12 innings but defeated the Vaqueros on April 8. The Roadrunners are No. 20 in RPI while UTRGV is No. 37.
Other top 100 RPI teams the Longhorns faced include No. 74 Texas State and No. 60 Lamar. Texas split the two-game series with the Bobcats, losing in Austin and winning in San Marcos, and topped the Cardinals on Tuesday night. Eight of Texas’ 11 midweek games were against opponents in the top 200 in RPI.
According to Warren Nolan RPI, which creates an unofficial Quadrant system akin to the one used by the tournament selection committees for men’s and women’s basketball, all but one of Texas’ eight losses have been of the Quadrant 1 variety.

The lone blemish in Quadrant 2, 3, or 4 for Texas in Warren Nolan’s system was the loss to the No. 74 Texas State Bobcats in Austin. Texas is 8-0 in Quadrant 2 games, 5-1 in Quadrant 3 games, and 12-0 in Quadrant 4 games.
Decidedly absent from Texas’ midweek slate in 2025 were any Big 12 teams. Houston was on the schedule, but weather caused the cancellation of that February 18 matchup. Playing that game would not have hurt Texas’ resume as the Cougars are currently No. 91 in RPI. Nor would matchups with other Big 12 schools in the Lone Star State. Baylor is No. 61 in RPI and TCU is No. 14. Despite its troubles this year, namely a 17-28 record, Texas Tech is No. 57. Playing those games would not have been a drag on Texas’ RPI ranking, but the Longhorns elected not to put those teams on the schedule this season.
Midweek games have come into focus for negative reasons in recent years. Many teams, especially bubble teams toward the end of the season, choose not to play games against opponents with weak RPI rankings. Simply playing some of those contests would lower a team’s RPI, even if the team wins. If Texas were on the bubble, Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle may have thought twice about playing No. 298 Prairie View A&M.
Texas is as far from the bubble as possible, so that 11-2 win was no issue for the Longhorns. In fact, midweek games have been of little issue for the Horns this season. While Texas ability to win on weekends is what has the first-year SEC squad at the top of the major polls, the burnt orange’s ability to win on Tuesdays has been a contributing factor as to why a No. 1 is by the Longhorns’ name.
