The top plays from 2024-25 Texas Longhorns athletics

With Texas Softball’s National Championship, a great year on the 40 Acres is approaching its completion with just track at the NCAA Outdoor Championships left on the schedule. The Longhorns had an unforgettable softball season that will provide fans with cherished memories for years to come. Steve Sarkisian’s football program kicked the door down upon its arrival in the SEC, and the Longhorns pummeled their rivals before making it to another playoff semifinal. Vic Shaefer’s team broke through to the semifinals and took Texas back to the Final Four.

Though Texas Volleyball and Baseball’s seasons fizzled out, they still had fantastic high points. Most notably, this season will always be remembered on the diamond because of Jim Schlossnagle leading the Longhorns to the SEC regular season crown in his first season in Austin. How did Texas A&M Baseball do without Schloss, you ask?
Basketball is another story. But we’ll keep it positive and focus on the fact that the Longhorns and Tre Johnson won a few unforgettable games in a loaded SEC.
So here we go—let’s look at the top plays from this year in Longhorn sports.
Reese Atwood Obstructs Tech’s Intentional Walk Attempt
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the 6th inning and with two outs, Atwood made one of the most heads-up plays I can remember. Texas Tech’s Nija Canady was pitching a near-flawless game, mowing down Texas batters left and right. But this was the Rocky IV “the Russian is cut” moment when it comes to Canady. The dominant pitcher clearly didn’t know how to intentionally walk a batter and received no instruction from her catcher that her pitches were in the danger zone. Atwood realized it and smacked a line drive into left field, bringing the game-winning run home. The catcher’s heroics flipped the game—and the series—on its head.

Softball Honorable Mention: Mia Scott’s Grand Slam
4th and 13
In the aftermath of 4th and 13—Quinn Ewers to Matthew Golden in the Peach Bowl against Arizona State—I wrote a little bit of an alternate history. I imagined how long and brutal the offseason would have felt had that play not been completed. It would have felt like the itchiest shirt collar in history, one you’re desperate to remove. Thank goodness it worked.
From January: In the place where I reside, Texas did everything they could to lose, then did everything they possibly could to win. Ewers to Golden, Ewers to Gunnar Helm, Ewers to Golden again. Andrew Mukuba. Names and moments now chiseled in stone in Texas football lore.

Booker drove midrange daggers into her opponents time and time again this season—just like her idol, Kevin Durant.
