The Weekend in Sports: Scottie Scheffler is inevitable

Scottie Scheffler is making a very strong case for the best professional career by a Longhorn. With his second major win this year and the third leg of the Grand Slam secured with his win at The Open, it might be just a formality that he eventually grabs that title. What’s amazing is how easy it looks for Scheffler right now. Watch out Kevin Durant, Earl Campbell and Roger Clemens.

Against his peers, he has reached the “inevitable” stage that superstar athlete occasionally achieves. Think Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Tiger Woods. When you become inevitable, it’s not if, but when? The rest of The Open field at Royal Portrush made a valiant effort, but those pursuits were in vain because of Scheffler’s -17 card.
“Being able to walk up 18 with the tournament in hand is a really tough thing to describe,” Scheffler said. “It’s a really cool feeling. I have a lot of gratitude towards being able to accomplish something like this. It’s taken a lot of work — not only a lot of work, but it takes a lot of patience. It’s a high level of focus over 72 holes of a tournament. This was, I felt like, one of my best performances mentally. We did a really good job of staying in it all week. Like I said, to only have one double — really only one over par hole in the last 36 holes of a major championship, that’s how you’re able to win these tournaments, just being able to do stuff like that. It takes a high level of focus.”
The US Open is all that’s left for Scheffler to conquer and reach golf immortality.
Cowboys fans, how are we feeling about Tyler Smith’s Super Bowl or bust comments?
“Super Bowl champions,” Smith said upon arriving for camp. “That’s always the expectation.”
Smith continued…
“Because we can win a Super Bowl. Why not? Why can’t we win?” he said. “Do you think it’s unrealistic?”
The Cowboys haven’t even been to the NFC championship game since 1995, but Smith’s stirring of the pot is an indication of where the entire organization thinks it should be.

Big 10 Media Days gets going this week in Las Vegas. While SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been very public when talking about the future of the College Football Playoff, it doesn’t seem like his Big 10 counterpart in Tony Petitti operates that way. Ohio State speaks on Tuesday. Will there be any bulletin board material for the Longhorns?
