I think we'll also know next week if it has been Flood holding back Rossi all this time from an aggressive defensive scheme, because this obviously worked and fits our personnel.

We went through this last year. Rossie didn't "rediscover" anything. There are teams like Washington he doesn't like to blitz against. The quick strike teams pick off the middle too easy. RU likes to keep DBs back to null the burn. Last year after Washington everyone was complaining about no blitzing. Then by mid-season people were celebrating the "return". This year after Washington people were crying again. Now they are happy again. Same thing will happen next year.

if you really think that's the case, then why on earth did we not blitz penn state?? a team who previously made it abundantly clear that they had a weak line who could not handle the blitz...

hmmm. theory out the door.

I think it was a fear of the young secondary getting burned. Looks like a bad read in hindsight. At least we can be proud of the defensive performance last night. Bring that to Indiana and I like our chances.

It probably was that Rossi didn't have any confidence in the defensive backfield due to the inexperience. Another possibility is that he realized his soft coverage wasn't working and needed to change.

I think it's been a process. What many don't understand is...they have inexperienced CBs on the 2 deep. As they get more comfortable and knowledge of what they are doing, they can blitz more and give different looks. It's very easy for blown coverages and mistakes to be made leading to very big pass plays if there is confusion. All the arm chair DCs out there would criticize and complain about lack of coverage. I was impressed last night with the coverage down the field when they did bring pressure. For the most part they had people covered downfield. They have to keep getting better. Austin really looks like he is going to be a top CB in the upcoming years.
