285: #1 seed Greg Kerkvliet vs #32 seed Nick Wilham (Indiana) -- I'll use NW

Per 1
Kerk blows through NW for a TD on the edge, 3-0. Kerk working to get a tilt, but NW isn't cooperating. NW works his knees up, but Kerk flattens him. Kerk works a 2-on-1, nothing. Kerk nearly tilts him but doesn't ge swipes. End. RT @ 2:05 for Kerk

Per 2
Kerk takes bottom. Kerk with a bit of a roll and gets the esc, 4-0. Kerk grabs the lower league and gets the TD, 7-0. He cuts him, 7-1. Kerk with a quick TD, 10-1. He cuts him again, 10-2. Kerk in and then gets behind for the TD, 13-2. After riding some time, Kerk cuts him, 13-3. Kerk tries a single, nothing. Stall warning on NW. Kerk in on a single, and works in for a TD on the edge, 16-3. End. RT @ 2:59 for Kerk

Per 3
NW takes neutral. NW shoots, Kerk counters and gets the TD for a 19-3 TF @ 5:17!!!!!

Nebby-AZ State heavyweights doing the shaved bear dance. Lots of hand-fighting and leaning on one another. No points in period 1.

Plenty of people who have never reffed are capable of analyzing what should or should not be called. Everyone from former wrestlers to coaches and even pbp announcers. Heck, there are plenty of refs that are terrible at it.

Everyone has an opinion. There's a big difference between having an opinion, and being able to accurately analyze calls. Despite being around the sport all the time, coaches and wrestlers (and former wrestlers) are, for the most part, not very good at analyzing calls. It's a combo of them seeing things from the perspective of their own interest, and them not having years of training and years of practice making calls.

Are refs perfect? Not at all. But the college wrestling refs are elite. And those that get to do NCAAs are really elite (they are constantly getting evaluated). None of the refs at NCAAs are even remotely close to being terrible at making calls.

The 23 seed is dominating Nagao. I know when he transfered he had 3 years left but I am not sure he is the future at the weight for us. His neutral skills just are not there.
I thought he looked good last year, vs RBY, but now disappointing by our standards…

…. may answer the question of how to fit both Lilledahl and Davis into the lineup.

Good first match for Carter to get his knee tested. The pin was very close in my view.
I was watching from afar but any concern on the initial scramble where it looks like his knee was in a strange position? He usually doesn’t give those up that easily.

Just a heads up. You have to be a PSWC member to see scores starting tonight. A message regarding this is on their website.
non-memeber here, I read it as must be member to see instant up dates. For the rest of us will be updated slower, same as first round. Maybe that is just a hopeful reading...

Thoughts on session 1:

It seems to be a down session. The start wasn't what we hoped for with Nagao's loss, Beau's struggles, then Kasak's loss. Overall though, it wasn't that bad. Heard a rumor of Nagao being badly sick. Could explain it if true. Kasak is fine, should be able to make a run although his second match in consolations (I believe tomorrow morning) will be tough. This is how Beau wrestles so not too concerning at this point. Haines, Mesenbrink, Truax, Brooks, and Kerk all looked good. Davis wrestled a tough guy in Lujan, as long as the finger is ok, he's fine. Starocci seemed a little tentative, understandably, but I think he looked healthy enough to win it. We'll find out tomorrow morning assuming he wins tonight.

170 was always going to be tough, maybe a little moreso after this session, but it's still within reach.
