40 Million Americans Receive SNAP Benefits To Help With Food - Many Not American Citizens

If you go back to the original creation of these programs, there were legitimate reasons. People should not have to go hungry in our country. But, over time, requirements for receipt of the benefits get watered down, management of the programs seemingly get worse and worse and of course, once you have a benefit, it never goes away. Look at the growth of SNAP over the last 10 years, and ask someone to justify it.

I agree with whoever said that we need to take a year, set standards and have everyone on SNAP, and other social programs for that matter, have to recertify their eligibility for the programs. Hard to do, but necessary, especially if you are concerned about a $38trillion, and growing debt.

I honestly don’t understand how some of this stuff is even controversial.

— Social welfare is for us citizens only
— Able-bodied people must work (or care for a dependent family member, go to school, etc)
— Supplemental NUTRITION assistance program should not include candy, sodas and extremely unhealthy foods

What am I missing here? How are these not 90/10 policies?
"— Supplemental NUTRITION assistance program should not include candy, sodas and extremely unhealthy foods"

I could be wrong, but I believe this has already been cut out. Either way, you are correct 100% on all 3 points.

Not per ChatGPT. This should be an incredibly obvious and near unanimous change that we can make. I'm curious if anyone on here disagrees?

Foods and Drinks You Cannot Buy with SNAP

1. Alcoholic beverages
  • Beer, wine, liquor, mixed drinks, or any product containing alcohol.
2. Hot or prepared foods
  • Anything meant to be eaten immediately.
    Examples:
    • Hot deli meals or rotisserie chickens.
    • Restaurant food or café meals.
    • Convenience store hot foods (e.g., pizza by the slice, hot sandwiches).
(Exception: Some homeless, elderly, or disabled individuals can use SNAP at authorized restaurants under the “Restaurant Meals Program.”)
3. Nonfood items
  • Household supplies, paper goods, cleaning products.
  • Pet food.
  • Toiletries and cosmetics.
  • Vitamins, supplements, or medicines (even if sold as food, like protein powders labeled “supplement”).
4. Non-nutritional beverages
  • Alcoholic drinks (as above).
  • Some energy drinks if labeled “Supplement Facts” instead of “Nutrition Facts” (they’re considered supplements, not food).

Maybe they were fake videos but I saw videos of people getting pissed because they couldn't buy candy bars with their EBT card.

I would expand that to processed foods, or foods that contain known negative health outcomes like:

- anything with HFCS
- anything with artificial trans fats
- any refined grains
- anything with a high sodium level
And any product with chemical additives like preservatives, dyes, and artificial sweeteners.

But the FDA has been bought and paid for, so they would never support.

If we really want to make this country healthy, and eliminate food deserts, then start by restricting what can be purchased with SNAP, and what can be served in our public schools. You would crush the market for cheap unhealthy foods.

What makes you think they're getting pushed off SNAP? They'll start collecting again as soon as the government reopens.

Nearly 50 years ago I was behind a guy at the grocery checkout. This was when food stamps were actually paper coupons. The guy had some lunch meat, bread, and a 6 pack of beer and the total was about $10. He handed the cashier a $5 food stamp coupon and a $5 bill. The cashier said sorry sir but I cannot accept food stamps for beer. So he switched hands gave her the $5 for beer then paid for the meat and bread with the food stamp which she gladly accepted.

This is what they mean when they say money is fungible.
