Rosman's first ever playoff game in Andrews was against one or both of the Sursavage brothers, and it was the first time Rosman had played Andrews in a football game....A good friend from Hickory(Cheerduck) sent me a couple CDs with copies of several games involving Ralph "Jug" Wilson's Glen Alpine teams, and one of those CDs was a copy of the Regional Championship game in 1962 played at Memorial Stadium in Asheville between Glen Alpine and Andrews with Glen Alpine winning 21-7?....It was the same year that Andrews beat Rosman by 1 point(34-33), and the tape made reference to that game before the championship game on the CD....I gave one of the two copies to a former Coach Cutshaw I believe, and I still have the other copy....Former Rosman player Clinton Owen who was inducted into the Rosman hall of fame last friday, dropped the potential game winning TD on the final play of the game....I think Clinton was either a freshman or sophomore that season, and was put into the game due to injured Tiger players....Was told it was a very physical game between the Tigers and Wildcats, but exciting right down to the final seconds...The Tigers didn't have a timeout remaining , so a Rosman player faked an injury late in the game to keep the clock from running out....Andrews and Glen Alpine were powerhouse programs back in those days, and I think Pee Wee Hamilton may have been the coach for the Wildcats back then, while Bill Cathey was in his 3 year at the helm of the Tigers that began playing football in 1959...
There was an article in the Transylvania Times on Monday from the archives back on Nov 9th 1967, and here;s what it said:
"The Rosman Tigers will journey to Andrews this friday night to take on the undefeated Andrews Wildcats, champions of the Smoky Mountain Conference, in first round action in the NCHSAA Class A football playoffs. Coach Bill Cathey announced that charter buses will be available for the trip to Andrews, and all persons wishing to go by bus are urged to contact Rosman High School'.....Andrews won that game 27-7, and later beat Tryon 34-7 to claim the West Title....Ayden beat Liberty 20-14 to claim the East title....It was the only time an East/West Champion has been crowned...The following year in 1968 Ayden beat Red Springs 14-13 for a unified state Class A title...That 68' season was also special for Rosman fans because it was the first year Rosman played on their own field at Silversteen Stadium after playing in Brevard those first 9 seasons, and it was the first time Rosman beat Robbinsville in Cherokee in the snow to record their first ever playoff win....The Tigers lost to Boone Trail the following week in Brevard(Neutral Field), and Boone Trail probably lost to Red Springs or Ayden in the Semifinals that season....The Tigers led Boone Trail at the half, but lost 26-20 on a muddy field in the 2nd round that season...
It's history such as that which makes these small schools special because Andrews and Rosman are still there today, while Ayden consolidated with Griffin, and Boone Trail and Glen Alpine no longer exist as a High Schools...Red Springs is a 2A school today, but was a 1A school a few years ago....
Time moves on, but it's always good to have folks like you and Wildcat that can reflect on the past, and some of the great players back then like the Sursavage brothers....
Roar Tigers Roar!
