One last post on Andrews. Sorry I got off topic on this thread. Again this is for Piles. 1980 AHS Graduate Jeff Blaylock went on to play football for UNC Tar Heels at linebacker and was drafted by Cleveland Browns but sustained a injury and didn’t make the cut.
Dr Gary Roper 1981 AHS Graduate played Basketball for the UNC Tarheels during the Michael Jordon era
Cissy Bristol Dyer 1978 AHS Graduate played basketball for Clemson University and Coached the Murphy Lady Bulldogs for many years
These are D-1 Universities. We have others who played at the D2 & D3 level in sports
This is to go along with SMC greats like Heath Shuler, Carl Pickens, The Streeter brothers of Sylvia Webster. Just to name a few. Point is we do have great Athletes come out of 1A & 2A but maybe not as noticeable or as often as a bigger school. Ok, i’m through with my rant

Hard to imagine a school with just 228 kids in the whole school. Why don't they combine with Murphy and have a 2A school. Would hurt football wise but makes sense.
Andrews has been a school for a long time. My oldest sister graduated there in 1950. I graduated almost 50 years ago in a class of 58. Families are smaller than they used to be, there are few jobs to attract outside people therefore class sizes are smaller than ever. Back in the 50's and 60's when Andrews won state championships there might be several boys on the team with the same last name, either brothers or cousins and the roster might be 35 players. It's not that way anymore.

I agree, but people don't need to feel too bad for Andrews, they have some legit talent on the way. 'Cats had a real good JV and a real good Midget team this year.
Thank you. I didn’t want to bring that up but we should have a very competitive team in a couple of years.

My mother graduated from Andrews a long time ago when the student only had to complete 11 grades. My father quit at age 11 and went to work with his father logging and hauling acid wood and tanbark to the local tannery. Me and all my older siblings graduated there as did my children. Now my grandchildren are in school and I would like to see them graduate from Andrews. I'm against consolidation but am told that it's inevitable, probably sooner than later

My Grandfather also worked at the Rosman Tanning and Extract Mill, and raised 13 kids working in that Mill....My Mother was born in Rosman on church street, and played basketball and graduated from Rosman, and I too played sports and graduated from Rosman as did my brother and both his boys....Consolidation is a word that gets people fired up in this end of the county...lol, but I like you am growing old, and it will likely come to pass one day when a lot of the natives are gone and people with no ties to Brevard or Rosman are making the decisions about such things....

Sad reality for the future, but you and I still have our Wildcats and Tigers today, and all those old memories to cherish, and pass along to the younger generation, and for that I'm thankful...

No problems about that, we're just proud of what we have accomplished. Besides, if I need to correct someone in the future they will believe your post before mine. Lol Thanks for the good vibes, we will need them I'm sure. I think the kids are starting to get it. We lost our entire defense from last season, but seeing them shutout Manteo last week revived hope. Thanks for all the work you put in as I enjoy reading your post.

It's all about accountability, gurnade...If I make a mistake which I have on numerous occasions, I would hope that someone corrects it for me because we all just want the truth and the facts....Guess I just had a brain lapse about your Vikings being in last year's final, and that's why I'm going to blame Deana King for NOT publishing that NCPreps Magazine this year to help this senile old feller out...lol....Just kidding of course, Deana!

Back to the discussion, I find it interesting that when the NCHSAA cut back to 48 teams....Teams from the West started heading to the East instead of Vice-Versa which has always been the case....Who would have thought that both West Montgomery and Albemarle would both be playing in Eastern 1A & 1AA playoffs this year, and Murphy with a relatively small student body would be playing in the 1AA playoffs?....Don't know that many people seen either one of those scenarios happening?

I also have not heard many folks reference the BYES in the first round, and what they think about it....I did read one reference to it that stated that it was unfair to the teams that received the BYE because they were missing out on that 1st round gate receipts, which is a good point for sure...

There are Pros and Cons for teams receiving the BYES, and that is certainly in the "CON" category....I think another one could be if a team is on a roll late in the season, and has a BYE, could it hurt that late season momentum when they do meet an opponent in the 2nd round who has already played and won that first round playoff game?

Of course, the Pros are obviously the ability for Coaches to scout their next opponent in person while also resting players who might have gotten banged-up in season ending rivalry games which is a big advantage in both cases....

I'm curious what other folk think about these first-ever BYES in the first round of the 1A & 1AA playoffs, and whether they are good or bad, or will they be a one year experiment?

What's your take?

I just ask opinions on the bye on another thread a few minutes ago and get one opinion here about the gate. Thanks Tigertown_a_Rick

Rick, check your palms. Any nail holes? Then your good. Plymouth I believe is on a nice roll here at the end of the season so here's the rock and hard place. I'm sure Cody is glad they get to keep rolling and doesn't have to deal with a bye. If they had a better 1st half of the season and had received a bye he wouldn't want that because of a lost gate. We po in Plymouth, we can't even afford the or to make us poor. This run the Viking's have been on the last 5 years has really helped this school out. I remember back in 2007 when we faced North Duplin in the Championship game. Our uniforms were hand me downs from Mars Hill I believe. Cody was able to buy them for $5.00 a shirt and I think $10.00 for pants. We looked like the Bad News Bears before Chico's Bail Bond's stepped in. Now almost every team at the school has new uniforms. Point is especially for 1-A teams every gate you can get helps. I hope there are some serious meetings after the championship games are played and the seeding process and looking at bye's just because schools depend on every dollar they can get. As for the east west travel I don't see much remedy to that as most 1-A teams are either in the far reaches of the mountains or nestled up next to the coast. Who know next season half of us could be headed your way in the playoffs. With the reduction to 48 teams it has changed many of the teams that get it. East has many bad teams more this year than the west so enjoy the ride pick up some good old Eastern North Carolina BBQ and someone please bring me some of Tom's best or whomever is fixin the elixir.

Wildcat, don't forget the Sursavage brothers from Andrews. I'm pretty sure they both played for Clemson in the late '60s.

You are so correct. I thought of them after the fact but I had already posted. I graduated in 1980 but had the prevlidge of playing our traditional pickup basketball games every Sunday after church occasionally against one of the Sursavage brothers. I was lots younger but thought that was awesome how Andrews had a player from our school play at Clemson. Thank you for posting this

While in high school, I had both their parents as teachers, Mrs. Sursavage my science teacher 4 years. We heard a lot about her "boys".

Was that back when Cecil Mashburn started
I don't remember Cecil being there my freshman year, which was Coach Hamilton's last year but he was there later on. I might be wrong but seems like he was an assistant football coach in the early '60s helping Coach Ensley.

Wildcat, don't forget the Sursavage brothers from Andrews. I'm pretty sure they both played for Clemson in the late '60s.

Rosman's first ever playoff game in Andrews was against one or both of the Sursavage brothers, and it was the first time Rosman had played Andrews in a football game....A good friend from Hickory(Cheerduck) sent me a couple CDs with copies of several games involving Ralph "Jug" Wilson's Glen Alpine teams, and one of those CDs was a copy of the Regional Championship game in 1962 played at Memorial Stadium in Asheville between Glen Alpine and Andrews with Glen Alpine winning 21-7?....It was the same year that Andrews beat Rosman by 1 point(34-33), and the tape made reference to that game before the championship game on the CD....I gave one of the two copies to a former Coach Cutshaw I believe, and I still have the other copy....Former Rosman player Clinton Owen who was inducted into the Rosman hall of fame last friday, dropped the potential game winning TD on the final play of the game....I think Clinton was either a freshman or sophomore that season, and was put into the game due to injured Tiger players....Was told it was a very physical game between the Tigers and Wildcats, but exciting right down to the final seconds...The Tigers didn't have a timeout remaining , so a Rosman player faked an injury late in the game to keep the clock from running out....Andrews and Glen Alpine were powerhouse programs back in those days, and I think Pee Wee Hamilton may have been the coach for the Wildcats back then, while Bill Cathey was in his 3 year at the helm of the Tigers that began playing football in 1959...

There was an article in the Transylvania Times on Monday from the archives back on Nov 9th 1967, and here;s what it said:

"The Rosman Tigers will journey to Andrews this friday night to take on the undefeated Andrews Wildcats, champions of the Smoky Mountain Conference, in first round action in the NCHSAA Class A football playoffs. Coach Bill Cathey announced that charter buses will be available for the trip to Andrews, and all persons wishing to go by bus are urged to contact Rosman High School'.....Andrews won that game 27-7, and later beat Tryon 34-7 to claim the West Title....Ayden beat Liberty 20-14 to claim the East title....It was the only time an East/West Champion has been crowned...The following year in 1968 Ayden beat Red Springs 14-13 for a unified state Class A title...That 68' season was also special for Rosman fans because it was the first year Rosman played on their own field at Silversteen Stadium after playing in Brevard those first 9 seasons, and it was the first time Rosman beat Robbinsville in Cherokee in the snow to record their first ever playoff win....The Tigers lost to Boone Trail the following week in Brevard(Neutral Field), and Boone Trail probably lost to Red Springs or Ayden in the Semifinals that season....The Tigers led Boone Trail at the half, but lost 26-20 on a muddy field in the 2nd round that season...

It's history such as that which makes these small schools special because Andrews and Rosman are still there today, while Ayden consolidated with Grifton, and Boone Trail and Glen Alpine no longer exist as a High Schools...Red Springs is a 2A school today, but was a 1A school a few years ago....

Time moves on, but it's always good to have folks like you and Wildcat that can reflect on the past, and some of the great players back then like the Sursavage brothers....

Good stuff, gurnade!

What a run you guys have been on, and you may be right that it ain't over till the kids think it's over, and it looks as though they believe that it's possible based on recent results, so in that case, there's a good chance that it's probable that the Vikings punch their 6th straight ticket to the finals this year....They definitely got the man in charge to make it happen!

It's a doable path, but no cakewalk. I promise the East title will have to be taken away it will not be given away. Either way the ride has been fun for this old broadcaster these last 30 years. Looking back even the 1-9 & 2-8 seasons were fun.

Thank you for that also Rick. Even though i’m to young to have been in those days we had a local historian who owned a restaurant. He had the restaurant walls covered with Andrews pictures and Wildcat sporting events. I loved to go there when I was young and I remember well the Glen Alpine name on the season schedule with the the score results out from it. I also believe we beat them a year or too. Our trophy case in Andrews also has the West Region State Championship trophies from the 60’s in them. We were told growing up that a lot of previous trophies for Andrews were lost in a fire in the old wooden AHS school. I love the history and thank you for sharing your stories

What’s even more impressive is Murphy Cherokee hayesville and Swain all field a soccer team which takes even more kids
Andrews too. So we can deduct about 13 more possible football players from our student body of 228. Lol. Like our other teams in our conference most of the same players will jump right into basketball then baseball & track

That Andrews rosman game was probably played in late 1962 and Clinton was a senior. Donald Owen was the player who faked the injury. He was carried off the field and was back on the next play. BTW Donald played guard and weighed maybe 150 lb.

Bad Tiger

Thanks Bad Tiger for jogging my memory...I remember Coach Cathey telling me the story about Donald, and I had to laugh when he told it....I was trying to cut Clinton some slack on that potential TD pass, and didn't know he was a Senior that year?....lol....Of course, he was one of my teachers in High School who taught me how to type in his class, so I can't be too hard on him....I pull out that old CD of that 62 season every now and again, and watch it....It's amazing the difference in the whole atmosphere at games back then compared to today...Only a cable separated folks from the football fields back then in some of the footage, and people apparently drove their vehicles and parked them right behind where they were standing in some cases....Men were dressed in ties and sport coats at some of the games in some of the footage on the CD....Different era for sure!

This of course is the 20th year anniversary of the 1997 Rosman team that made that great run to the state championship game beating Albemarle and Thomasville on the road before beating Burlington Cummings and Starmount in Rosman....I went out near the school, and Ernest Powell found an old plastic outlilne of a Tiger Paw, and we got a bunch of town folk together, and painted the town in Tiger Paws after that Thomasville game...Painted many of those myself, and used a leaf blower to dry them out....Drew a picture of a state championship trophy on a bed sheet, and hung it over the goalpost in the evening so the players would see it the next day....Coach Fox let it hang on the goal post all week, and we made another for the Starmouint game....Still remember the riddle kid who had hurt his ankle either in practice or during the game that week, making that FG in the final seconds to beat Cummings....WLOS interviewed him after the game to get his comments, and he said, "I was so nervous that I thought I was going to Puke"....Still laugh about that comment today....20 years since that magical season....Hard to believe!

Back to the discussion about this year's playoffs!

You're right Widcat10fan, Andrews beat Glen Alpine in the last season of the Region titles in 1967...It was the Region 3 title game that the Wildcats won 20-7 that year...

Glen Alpine and Clyde had a playoff game in the early sixties that ended up in a fight between the players and fans. Both teams were on probation for a couple of years.I can remember the Bears playing Glen Alpine when I believe Jug Wilson was coach.Pisgah played Andrews in 66,67,68.Won in 66 ,68 tied in 67.

No private schools, charter schools, or Early College to compete with helps with that, but I have also been surprised how constant Robbinsville has stayed, especially after Stanley closed.

I see Terry pretty often. We don't live that far from each other and attend the same church. A couple of years ago he gave me a mess of ramps. He looks to be about 130 lbs now.

In 1954 my brother-in-law played at Andrews under young Coach Hugh "Pee Wee" Hamilton. They had no activity bus so either walked or rode in the coach's car to practice at the old field on the river. After practice my b-I-l would run all the way back to school and beat the ones riding in the car. After changing clothes he would walk and hitchhike back home to Topton. They had a winning season but ultimately lost to Reidsville.

Thing is Robbinsville numbers have rarely changed in 50 years while others are going down mostly. Some going up.
At last Friday's game at R'ville, I believe there were 3 players with the same last name. Brothers or cousins maybe but unusual nowadays.

I heard stories like that about the Myers brothers. A little bootlegging on the side too I heard. Lol now that might not be true but I heard that growing up

Hayesville's 2002 team, which was probably the best team Hayesville has had the last 20 years (lost regional final to Elkin on long pass as time expired) had I think 8 Ledfords on the roster.

I watched that game from the Elkin sidelines that night, and Hayesville must have lost 4 or 5 fumbles during that game which of course you got to give the Bucking-Elk players the credit for....That last TD pass with a little over 30 seconds left in the game to a kid named Mitch Allen was the difference, best I remember?....It was a great Western Regional Final that year, and I thought for sure Hayesville would win the game, but Elkin and Coach Richard Grissom had a different idea...The Ledford name is definitely a prominent name in that part of the world as is, or was Woody back then..Hayesville had a state championship calibre team in both 2002 and 2003, and they also had current Robbinsville Coach Dee Walsh as the Offensive Coordinator during that time which didn't hurt either...

I attended that Western Regional Championship game at Memorial Stadium in Asheville with my dad and an uncle. At halftime my dad moved us all to the Clyde side of the field because he knew what was ultimately going to happen and it did with just over a minute left in the game. That 21-7 victory for the Green Wave was sweet as it was the first of four for Coach Ralph "Jug" Wilson. He a had back to back undefeated 12-0-0 Championship teams in '61 and '62.

I had the pleasure to see the game ball of the GA vs.Clyde game on display just yesterday at the Green Wave Restaurant in Glen Alpine. Today I had lunch with 3 of the members of those teams as there's a group of guys( 25-40) that gather monthly at a local restaurant to enjoy each other's company and reminisce about those golden years. One of them was elected Mayor of Glen Alpine in yesterday's election.

That game almost always gets great discussion just by the mention of the name, Clyde.

Glen Alpine(2A) played Pisgah(4A) in 1968 and 1969 in non conference action losing both games. Pisgah came to Hickory in the '68 playoffs, of which I have some of that action on DVD now, and were a strong team. The Green Wave had problems finding opponents at that time due to 1. Their ability to play you tough and 2. School consolidation impending. The Green Wave lost both years, ('68 & '69) to Hendersonville in the 2nd round of the playoffs to sound single wing teams.

I remember those games .We also played Spruce Pine several years. The sixties and seventies were the Pisgah glory years .From 66-76 won four state championships.Played about anyone that would play us.Played several teams out of Tennessee. When Joe Compton came to Canton and started running the Notre Dame Box formation. His first game was against Spruce Pine .We beat them 19-18.I thought Joe needs to go back to Georgia and take that offense with him.He left Canton after three years and had a record of 35-3.Shows how much I know about Football.

Years ago I read a story about a Clay County man who just didn't like Ledfords. He and his wife sold out and headed west. Each time they stopped for the night, he would walk around and look at the town. Every time he would see mailboxes or buildings or street signs with the name Ledford on them. Finally they arrived in California and he knew he couldn't go much further. Looking around this last town, he saw a big building with a sign on the front "Ledford Manufacturing Company". He told his wife "Ma we've jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. This is the place where they make all them durn Ledfords.

you're right--that team was why I said 20 years--guess it was 20 years ago but 21 seasons ago. Should've just said this century.
