I upgraded from a 2 1/2 year old 3G

So for me speed was a huge difference - everything's a lot faster/smoother than my old one. It's a lot lighter, too. Screen size is kind of funny - after using it for a while I didn't feel like the screen was all that much bigger, or that it made that much of a difference .... until I picked up my wife's 4S - her screen seems small by comparison now, and her phone feels heavier. All in all a solid upgrade.

Yeah, I went from the original 4 to the 5 a couple months ago. The LTE data speeds are unbelievable. I regularly get 40-50mbps download speeds and 30+mbps uploads.
The screen is longer so you get an extra row of icons which is nice if you have a bunch of apps. It's noticeably thinner than the 4. Battery life is the same. Siri can't understand southern accents.

Outside of that, most of the iPhone 5 "features" are actually just iOS6 features which is also available for the 4.

If you get LTE (not c-Spire) it's 3-4x faster

Lighter and better picture quality with a bigger screen. Charges and syncs faster with the new cord, but also it uses a new cord, which means existing ones are useless. That's the major downside.

i needed a new phone. If I already had a 4s I probably wouldn't upgrade. I'm sure the 5S will be out in six months.

I also figured out where the "surf and talk" feature comes in handy

And that's with watch ESPN app. If I'm streaming games to my Apple TV, it keeps playing when someone calls, if you have AT&T. You can also FaceTime via data instead of wireless now if you want to.

Hell of a deal at our target through tomorrow. They are giving up to 150 dollars to trade in an iphone4. They sell the 4s for 49 dollars, and the 5 for 150. If you trade in a 4 for a 4s, they give you the difference in a target gift card. If you trade for the 5, all you would have to pay is the tax. Not sure what we are going to do.

I had a 4, and that was the first smartphone I ever had. I held out for a long time and was still using an old Nokia bar phone that had the 2-color screen. Damn thing was a tank and picked up reception everywhere.

That said, I thought the screen on the 5 was weird when I got it, but once you use if for a while, you won't want to go back to the old one because it will look squatty. The major difference to me was that it was much faster, just navigating around the operating system. The LTE is faster than my wifi sometimes.

As others have said, it does not take long to fully charge it up with the new cord. I did not have a bunch of gadgets and **** that took the old connector, so the change to the new cord did not bother me in that regard. One thing that did bother me about the new cord is that the phone comes with just one, and I like to have one for the office and in the car, but you're gonna pay $30 for each additional one at the moment, since the Chinese haven't quite figured out how to copy them yet and sell them for $3 on ebay. So I just carry my one charger around with me all day. Was a pain at first but I got used to it.

The maps **** has never malfunctioned on me. From media reports, you would think the maps are completely wrong but I have not had a problem. I do hate the new YouTube app but I've gotten used to it. The extra row of icons is nice I suppose but not that big a deal to me. The camera works much better than the 4 camera. Panorama is nice but I never use it.

The biggest difference to me is durability

The 5 feels like it is metal with a thin racquetball court on front. I know a few phones have Gorilla Glass 3 as well, but the metal back absorbs any drop. The one part that is still glass back has already cracked on mine, but you can't even tell. I'm sure I'll find a way to break mine eventually, but it won't be because I drop it on the concrete. I like the SIII, but all the drop tests I watched came out in favor of the 5. The plastic body doesn't absorb the shock as well. Speed is the same between the two if you have LTE.
