See, I think it still will. It will be a place for reclamation projects, kids going down a level to prove their worth, or HS level recruits that in the past would never go to a mid major but will now because so many high majors want portal experience.
What is going to be much harder is for a mid-major to make a serious run in the NCAA though. They will still win some upsets early as they did this past year or at least threaten to do so. But much harder to get to the Sweet 16 and beyond.
The Sweet 16 had one non-football school: St. John's. Yes, I include Uconn as a football school even though we all know the deal : )

The mid major isn't extinct because highly touted HS recruits are going to start funneling there for more play time. Would you rather sit on the bench for a year at a blue blood or go to an A-10 or MVC school and start? At that point they'll either go to the NBA or have a good NIL value to transfer up into a P4.
But even on that level you'll have schools in an upper tier and other programs who will struggle. St. Louis is a good example, they're going to have about $10M in NIL funds from what I saw online. That's a good school for a high 4 - 5 star kid who wants to play.

Precisely why SHU needed a GM and should invest even more in a scouting department. There's a lot of talented kids out there.
