1 - UCONN
2 - St. John's
3 - Creighton
4 - Georgetown - Surprise so far
5 - Marquette - Should be/could be number 4 but today was not good
6 - Villanova
7 - Butler
8 - Providence - Falling fast
9 - DePaul
10 - Seton Hall
11 - Xavier

The Big East is not good right now, an awful lot of mediocre at best teams perhaps even starting at number 4.

Rough first week for the BE. Right now it seems like 3 Tiers.

3 Excellent coaches with great resources and talent.

1 - UConn
2 - StJohns
3 - Creighton

4 programs with good resources and talent, 3 have good coaches, one has to prove himself.

4 - Georgetown
5 - Marquette
6 - Villanova
7 - Providence

These 4 teams just don't have enough talent and need to spend more on Rev Share or get comfortable with bottom half finishes.

8 - Butler
9 - DePaul
10 - Seton Hall
11 - Xavier

Agree with the list and comments.

I don't see the top 3 changing. And while all those coaches go out of their way to praise their Big East brothers, you can tell by their OOC they learned lessons from the past few years when it comes to scheduling and how that impacts things tourney time. Whether it is playing top programs outside the BE to challenge their respective teams before March, to build resumes for March, to acquaint their teams with different styles, athletes and caliber of players they won't see as much in the league. They know the Big East is a tough, gritty league where road Ws are difficult, but they want to make sure their respective groups are growing as they should and not getting "fools gold" from dominating within the league.

Losses to BYU, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kansas won't hurt UCONN. It can only help them. Losing to Bama, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Iowa State, etc won't hurt St John's -- it will only help them. Ditto for Creighton although I don't think their OOC is nearly as tough as Uconn or SJU, unless I missed something.

Will be interesting to see who emerges amongst the middle tier. Cooley is talking an awful lot early, but he always talks a lot. I think they will be good. With Marquette, the question has always been whether Shaka's "player retention only" model will work in this portal era to the point where MQ is consistently a top 25 team like they've been recently. Jury out on that IMO. Nova and Providence -- who knows.

Would love to be able to say that I think we are going to be in that "middle tier", but I can't based on what we've seen. Because of the OOC, or lack thereof, anything we "know" about this team with a reasonable degree of confidence will probably not be that good until we get into mid-late January, at the earliest.

I didn't track the score too closely but it looked like Georgetown struggled with Morgan State.

Seems Gtown did struggle a bit game 1 (I only saw the box score), and I don't think Morgan State is a decent mid-major, picked 4th in their league.

Gtown did take care of Maryland, but Maryland is picked towards the bottom of the Big 10 this year.

Conference looks rough after the top 3. Looks to be a down year. Even SJU was exposed against good competition with active guards. Their lack of a pg and clearly defined roles really seemed to hurt them against Alabama, all of whom's guards looked tremendous.

I agree with the idea that you want to schedule aggressively in the OOC if you have a team with a legitimate chance of being an NCAA team. The Selection Committee tends to reward the teams that do and win their share. It won't especially help UConn or SJU if the go 0-5 in those games.

On the other hand, if you're Seton Hall or Butler and you're looking at maxing out at six or seven BE wins, there's no real reason to do that. Schedule some wins and build some confidence rather than face five or six tough tests where you're lucky to win one.

Watching games from all over this week, it's very obvious that we lack the offensive firepower to be anywhere close to a Tournament team.

We don't have players capable of scoring 25-30 points. No 3-pt shooters to fear, no one to break down their defender and get us a bucket, no one with a strong post game. And we don't have an offensive system that gets guys high percentage shots.

I've harped on this for the last couple of years but Sha has got to get some players from Europe. I watched several games where European "Freshmen" lit it up. These guys have size, skills and experience. We need a guy or 2 like this. In our offense, our "4" is constantly open from 3 in the corner when we get penetration from our guards.

VCU vs Providence, VCU had a 6'9" Greek "freshman" dominate with 33 points, 5 for 8 from 3. Prov brought a 6'7" "freshman" from Estonia off the bench who had 17 points after scoring 19 in the opener. He's 7 for 18 from 3 in the 2 games.

DePaul signed a Serb in August with shooting skills, Rutgers has 2 European freshman who went 3 for 10 from 3 in the first game. Point is nearly every team is mining the European Pro Leagues for talent but us. And they generally have exactly what we need. Guys with shooting ability and IQ with size to play Forward.

If they go 0-5 on those games, it won’t help with their rankings per se. But if they win 12/13+ in the league, they are dancing anyway and will have the benefit of having played against that level of competition. Plus it’s awesome exposure for their programs and their fans. Playing in packed arenas in big time OOC games is fun for the fan base. And of course if they win a couple it only helps with the resume boosting.

I understand your point about teams projected as weaker gaining confidence in OOC games especially early ones. But I don’t think it does much for preparing them for league play. If the Big East was a lock 6 or 7 bid league, like it used to be, I would get it more. For years under Jimmy B he infamously would play that “don’t leave NY” OOC because they didn’t have to. Unfortunately the Big East recently has become a league that gets less bids. So if you are a big time program I think you need to even go crazier in the OOC and challenge your group. Personally I’d much rather lose a bunch of close, big time OOC games than play marshmallow soft cupcakes where not winning by 25-30 probably hurts you more than it helps and doesn’t give your team live reps against better completion you are going to see in league play.

They beat Maryland convincingly from start to end. Beating a close rival from the B10 by 10 on the road in front of 17,000 at College Park is a good win. If we beat Rutgers at the RAC by 10 I'd be pleased.

What I like about GTown is they have 2 really good scorers in KJ Lewis and Malik Mack and they have an emerging strong compliment in Soph F Caleb Williams. Then they have 2 big 7-footers and about 4 others who have P5 experience and athleticism including several good defenders. If Langston Love from Baylor gets healthy that gives them another dangerous shooter/scorer.
