NEW YORK – New Jersey natives James Green (Willingboro) and Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield) will square off in the first announced Team USA vs. NCAA Champions match during the 2019 “Grapple at the Garden” Beat the Streets (BTS) benefit at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on May 6. The bout between Green, a four-time USA World Team member who earned NCAA All-America honors four times at the University of Nebraska, and Ashnault, the Rutgers graduate senior who last month claimed the NCAA title at 149 pounds, will be part of the 10th annual event, which supports BTS, the largest grassroots inner city wrestling program in the United States. “Grapple at the Garden” serves as both a fundraiser for the organization and to celebrate its athletes as they compete on the biggest stage in the center of the world.

Green, who capped a career at Willingboro HS as the first in school history to win a state title with a perfect 29-0 record in 2011, was also the 2017 US Open champion and two-time World medalist (silver, 2017; bronze, 2015). He was also the Big Ten champion at Nebraska in 2014.

How does Shnaulty match up against Green in freestyle? This match will be freestyle correct?

Anthony will be a big underdog. Green will be much bigger, he wrestles 70kg for the US team(154lbs). They always have a weight allowance(probably 160ish).
The college guys most likely will all get a little worked over, but a great spotlight for them.

Don't forget, JoJo Aragona will be wrestling there as well.

The venue is attached to the MSG, the old Theater at MSG, a great venue. I used to watch a lot of Golden Gloves Boxing action there. Beer, wine and liquor is sold there as well as decent food. And only a Block away from the fabled "Blarney Stone' bar, lol.

A lot more match ups soon to be announced.

And this Beat the Streets event is affordable!! Tons of $30 seats available. The $'s or the one on the air craft carrier were pretty steep!!

Based on freestyle experience, size, etc it will be a tough go for AA. The only thing working in AA’s favor is that Green is a very deliberate wrestler/doesn’t take a lot of shots, at least against high level guys. He wins/loses a lot of very tight matches. On paper it shouldn’t be close but you never know. So far two really compelling matches at BTS for fans of RU and Jersey wrestling. Let’s now get Burroughs vs Ben Askren or Mekhi and maybe add Myles M to the card. Jersey takeover.

Why don't they just wrestle American folk style? It'll be more fun for the fans, and all the Team USA members know the folk style very well.

Because once you leave college...Folkstyle is over, dead, finished.... Why would the US National team members wrestle Folkstyle? And for a large group of fans, Freestyle is more exciting and better to watch.

After his historic senior season for Rutgers wrestling, Anthony Ashnault is set to compete in the 10th annual Beat the Streets New York charity event.

Ashnault is going to battle against two-time world medalist, and fellow New Jersey native, James Green. Green, like Ashnault is a four-time All-American, and also an NJSIAA state champion.

The all New Jersey battle will be part of a dual between the senior world team vs. the ncaa champions. The event will take place on May 6th at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden.

Agree. No downside. The question Is can JG get through Ash hands... to take that double. I think score closer then most might think. I say slight edge only because JG been just doing FS.

Freestyle gets a little getting used to but it very entertaining. After college it's all that's left.
After this season I would not bet against AA

Folk style is much better for those interested in pursuing UFC, which is the new lucrative pathway for elite wrestlers.

And yes, I find freestyle less entertaining than folk style. I'm not alone in this.
