Guys, make sure to check out the Marching Scarlet Knights halftime show tonight! It's going to be really awesome/fun. Stay in your seats for that extra few minutes before you run and get a hotdog. If you like the stuff Ohio State does, you'll love this show! Here's a sneak peak from the Facebook page:

I guess it will depend on whether or not Tim Smith and company were able to pilfer the drill and arrangements from OSU.....of course we know he won't be able to teach it. This will be.....intersting to say the least.

Can't come on the board and advertise an exciting halftime show if that is the product. Teen age kid in my section yelled out that Ridge High School did that exact show 3 years ago in her sisters senior year. Spelling out Halo and making a Z is not going to keep people in their seats at halftime.

I enjoyed it! (geek here)

Loved the start screen and GAME OVER. But was that a Triforce during their Zelda segment? I couldn't see it clearly from my vantage point.

Pretty weak, imo.

Lots of "march to a spot, then stop for 16 bars, then march to another spot, then stop for 16 bars..." If the drill designer is going for somewhat recognizable forms (i.e. triforce, Tetris pieces) and is making the audience stare at them for long periods, then the drill instructor has to do a better job making sure the band can hit those forms (especially straight lines).

So where do you think he gets his ideas?

One note:

The video board director needs to stick to the wide-angle from above, showing the whole field to help with this.
I couldn't tell what the formation was from my angle, and the scoreboard is showing close-ups of individual musicians.

Tough crowd.

I enjoyed the show. It would be great if we could either (a) increase the size of the band to 450, or (b) have a wall of microphones on the field to pipe the band over the speakers like when they play in the stands. You really cannot hear much when the band is playing on the field and that's a shame.

I'd call it more of a try-force. The lines were not straight, but Triforce was what they were going for.

The fact that he took the show from a HS band is not surprising.....though spelling out of "HALO" was probably from OSU. Just for reference here is the OSU video game halftime from 2012:

The band director's prior musical experience prior to Rutgers was managing a Coconuts.

Or if we could field a band of size with instrumentation you can hear in a stadium. Ohio State has 196 brass instruments and 28 drumline. From rough estimates the first game, we had about 150-160 marching members (including drumline, excluding color guard)... and of those, at least a third to a half were woodwinds that you can't hear in a packed stadium without microphones.

I played saxophone in marching band... but I know that there's no way that instrument can be heard across a loud stadium without a microphone. In a quiet stadium for marching band competition or exhibition, woodwinds are perfectly fine - in a college football environment, you need brass and lots of it.

When it comes to creative stuff, you can't rip off someone else's idea with a worse version. Its like re-making a song and doing it worse. Not only was the idea copied from OSU, but many of the formations were copied, and they were mostly executed worse.

Yeah, the video board needed to stick to the above field view. Couldn't tell what they were doing from my seats. And the band still only plays to one side of the field. Could only hear the drums. Got some of the trumpets part of the time, but could make out any songs. Doesn't the band have section leaders? Why doesn't the band spread out? They could have the section leaders up high with the director and conduct in sync with one another. I've seen this at other schools' halftime shows. All the leaders do is keep their eyes on the director and mimic him. It would be nice if the entire stadium could hear the music and see the show.

music was okay but the choreographer needs to be fired asap. What was the weird blob after the star durng mario music? and the tri force was the worst tri force i've ever seen, ever.
and why was the H in Halo so fat and crooked.

music sounded good when they were facing the camera.

JMU would disagree with you. But they have something like 500 musicians.

Everyone in our section loved the halftime show, but you should feel free to come over to the band parents tailgate at the next game and tell us how badly our kids suck. Our kids spend a week in the summer at band camp where they practice from dawn through the night. During the season, they rehearse every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after going to class all day, and spend their entire Saturday rehearsing then entertaining the crowd during the game. They sure sound loud enough in the YouTube video that is taped from the top of the stadium's upper deck.

Would you like to compare the band to a well-established B1G marching band? Check out the Penn State Blue Band's halftime show from this year's Rutgers game (below). If our band did their show, people would be talking about how "boring" the formations are and how the music stinks.

I haven't EVER read a post here about the Band where ANYBODY has said the kids suck or it is their fault. We all know WHO the problem is and what the problem is. NOT enough members, Not enough Brass, lack of creativity and terrible uninspired leadership.

Phil Collins boring? PSU marches with spats and is tight. RU Drum and Bugle "plant your heels and walk" in black shoes is yuk. Not a Marching Band thing. Sorry. Again, the kids can only do what they are told to do.

Edit: having watched it again and will say that the movement was quite better than I have seen in a while. 50% more horns and percussion would add A LOT. THAT is the biggest issue. Just too small and not loud enough.

I couldn't hear them from my seat. They need either more members or some microphones.

Imagine how impressive it would be if they gave all those flag twirlers bass drums instead.
And give them to the flutes too.

When a football coach is fired (at Rutgers or anywhere else) for underperforming with the available talent, it is NEVER about the players. It's always about the coach's abilities (or lack thereof). Same thing with the band. NO ONE is questioning the talents or dedication of the band members at all. It's entirely about the leadership they have. The kids are awesome and they deserve better.
