My thoughts and prayers go out to Bert and his family as they mourn his passing… i’m sure many stories will be told about Bert and many laughs will result. I remember Burt for many years on this site. He was always good and he was always so so smart. Rest in peace Bert.

Man this sucks. Bert was an outstanding man and wealth of information. Im very sad to hear this news. Bert had become to good for this sad world we've become. Rest easy brother, cheers for you incoming tonight good sir. Prayers for Sherry and the family.

Yeah I hope she finds comfort in all the people that share their love and time with the man. It absolutely destroys the heart of people that love that long. I too would be destroyed if my wife ever leaves me first.
Yea I try to remember that and try my best to be respectful that they’re human beings that not just a computer name. Sometimes, because this is UK basketball, I exhibit multiple disorders at times because I’ve never been able to handle it. But I’m really so different in person. Not due to cowardice or hiding behind a screen name. Because whether you’re online or in person if you say something ridiculous about UK basketball I turn Wierd. I just have much more interaction with people discussing UK basketball here.
Yeah, Bert lost his grandson, Owen, about 12 years ago in a car accident. Hearing the details of the accident wrecked me for the rest of that day.

I'll try to shorten this story:
So, my wife an I go RVing with a large group. Many years ago, it was derby weekend, we all went to an RV park near Louisville. The people directly across from us saw me outside getting set up and struck up a conversation. I'm a talker, so I walked over. They had just started camping and this was their first trip. She introduced me to her husband and parents.
They wanted to see the inside of our rv, so I brought the couple over, they walked through ours, then we went over and walked through theirs
While we were over there, they mentioned that her father had retired from CSX. I said "hey, one of the guys in our group retired from the railroad". That's all it took. We partied all weekend.
Now, by this point, I had been on Rupp Rafters for many years, but I never put 2 and 2 together. I sat across the table from Bert and talked UK basketball and history for 3 days.
Well, the wife and I took a few more trips with Ben and Sammy, we have a lot in common. Then, I was on RR posting and Bert replied to me. It was then that I realizes the old guy I met several months earlier, was Bert from RR. I couldn't believe it. It made us so much closer. We are like family now and I couldn't imagine life without Ben and Sam and anytime we had the chance to see Bert and Sherry, was a good day for me. I love that family and now a massive piece is gone.
I have ties to CSX also, my Dad was an engineer for both CSX and ICRR, my son is/was engineer, plus works out of Evansville as a yard master, train master.
This is one of those times that I'm kicking myself for not doing something I should have done, he invited me and Mrs. M to come visit him and I didn't go. He has a few pieces of my Stained-glass that I am glad I gave him!

I remember him all the way back to the AOL Kentucky board. He sold me a pair of tickets to the football game where Yeast set the all time SEC record for receptions and single game yards receiving record (I believe that's the ones that were set) against Vanderbilt in 98. Spent $40 for 2 tickets and didn't expect much, but the dude gave me front row seats. Best seats I've ever had at a sporting event. RIP big guy.
This is exactly the way I feel. I am a few years older than Bert, my wife is the same age he was. I have very few fears in life but the one I fear the most is my wife or children or grandchildren would die before I do. If any of that happened I would ask God to lead me across the river for eternity. I was married in 1967, a year after Bert. We talked about that often..
The last conversation I had with Bert he told me he was ready to go. He had lived a wonderful life with many friends and memories and he knew his time was drawing near. He was at peace. That is the situation I pray I am in on my last day on this earth. At peace with my God and my family and friends. Bert was the example to follow.

After reading this thread, did he have a son Jerome? He was my professor when I went back to school and his son passed away while I was in his class in a car accident. Sounds similar to what some of you have said and that’s not a super common surname.

My mom's brother was an adjuster for CSX forever. Based out of West Virginia for most of his CSX days I believe. Retired back in early 2000's I believe.
Hey guys, Burt's obituary is out. I typed in Warren County obits and it came up. Hardy and Sons I think it was.
I am saddened by the loss of Bert. It was always a pleasure to talk with him in the conversations we had in the D-League before I took a long hiatus from here. We shared a common interest in video recording. God Bless his loved ones at this time. It is always tough to lose a love one during this time of year. My Uncle is close to his age and also retired from CSX. The world would be a much better place with more people like Bert in it!
I sure hope so as well. It’s all we can ask for at the end of it all. I hope to have many more decades with my wife. I just pray I go first. I don’t want to have to mourn my kids or wife.
My Uncle worked for CSX in Louisville. Not sure if it was the Osborn Yard or the Intermodal Terminal. I will be seeing him again this weekend. Always been a train enthusiast myself. He gave me an old lantern, cap and many of the old manuals, etc that he had from his days at CSX.
My Dad worked the yard in Central City, before that he worked in Dawson Springs when it was ICRR, then they shut down CC, he finished up in Fulton Ky. My Dad wad one of many that never got to enjoy his retirement, retired in 93, passed away in 94 of cancer!
They were going to transfer Bert to Wva, so he just went ahead and retired in his early 50's IIRC.
