Thought this was interesting question by Josh Barnhill over at Maroon & White Nation ... http://maroonandwhitenation.com/?p=846
At first, I dismissed the idea of even 'thinking' there was any valid comparision between Relf and the "Legend." Manning is, after all, "everything that is good and holy" about Ole Miss football." But, got to say he pointed out a lot that I had forgot after 40+ years.
Anyway, at least it's not about recruiting. Post follows ...
Did Chris Relf Just Have a Better Career than Archie Manning did at Ole Miss?
Posted on January 2, 2012 by Josh Barnhill
I’m not going to say Chris Relf is a better quarterback than someone who finished Top 5 in the Heisman vote twice, was SEC Player of the Year and an NFL Offensive Player of the Year, but I can look at the numbers and see that Chris Relf might have had a better career at Mississippi State than Ole Miss’ beloved Archie Manning did in Oxford.
1. Chris Relf was 3-0 in Egg Bowls. Archie Manning was 1-1-1. From 1947-1967 Ole Miss dominated the Egg Bowl, going 17-1-3. Enter Archie in 1968 and a WINLESS State team forced a 17-17 tie. Two years later, #10 Ole Miss loses to a 5-5 State team 19-14 IN OXFORD.
2. Completion Percentage; Relf: 57.8 Manning: 52.8
3. Yards per attempt; Relf: 7.2 Manning: 6.2
4. Passing Touchdowns; Manning: 31 Relf 27 ….really? only four more TDs in 11 more starts?
5. Interceptions; Relf: 16 Manning: 40
6. QB Rating; Relf: 131.1 Manning: 108.2
7. Rushing Yards; Relf: 1,511 Manning: 823
8. Winning Percentage; Manning: .667 (22-10-1) Relf: .636 (14-8) …pretty close considering Archie is a “legend”.
9. Relf was 2-0 in bowl games. Manning was 2-1. The accomplishment here is Chris Relf won a Gator Bowl, Manning lost a Gator Bowl.
10. Over the past few years you saw what Chris Relf did at MSU. He was good, but not great. And his numbers are comparable to Archie Mannings? Ole Miss’ greatest hero? TSUN fans will surely tell you that Manning did not have much help (same song and dance as his time with the Saints), but the Rebs did go 10-2 the year after he graduated, 1971…..and they clobbered State 48-0.
You be the Jury. Maybe Relf’s career was better than Manning’s, maybe it wasn’t. Whatever it is, we’ve got bragging rights, and and the right to rub their nose in these stats!
