Since the reorganization of the Big East in 2013 there have been 13 COY award winners. Of those, only three have won the award without their teams finishing first in the conference.

2015-16: Willard (finished 3rd) (tied with Jay Wright who finished 1st)
2016-17: Chris Holtmann, Butler (finished 3rd)
2020-21: Mike Anderson, SJU (finished tied for 4th)

Yes, the BIG EAST Basketball Coach of the Year award is primarily based on performance during the conference regular season, rewarding coaches for their team's success within the league, though overall team success (including non-conference) helps build the case for the coach. Coaches vote for the award at the end of the regular season, and it reflects leading a team to the top of the BIG EAST standings, like Rick Pitino did with St. John's in 2024-25.
