I am pretty sure that this thread will go down the path it does very every year on how USNW rankings are tilted based on criteria that really have no merit if a school is better or worse academically.

I always think of Clemson and a few others manipulating their numbers. But, it is the ranking that most people quote.

If we are being honest our peer group from that list is tOSU Purdue, Maryland and PSU. No way NW, Mich, UCLA or USC
Schools slightly better than us Ill and Wisc.

We are better than IU, Michigan St Minny and the rest

Putting aside whether we agree number 55 is appropriate or not

Yeah.

Ranking schools academically without any stated criteria/purpose is silly, anyway. Some schools think they are the best simply because of a low acceptance rate. Others have the goal of educating as many of its citizens as possible. Some are undergrad mean machines, others are graduate research monsters, and some are both. And of course many, such as Clemson, have learned to play the game...

Out of curiosity, I looked up the rankings for Oregon and Washington as they are the 2 most likely next B1G targets for expansion, and UW is #55, tied with RU and UMD, and Oregon is #105 and would be 2nd to last ahead of only Nebraska.

The true outlier is Nebraska.
Yeah, they seem to be way down in every ranking of B1G schools.

But what does that even mean? I'm sure they have good facilities, plenty of high-end students, and wall-to-wall PhD's on their faculty, just like everybody else. I just don't take these things seriously unless the ranking includes a description of what exactly they are looking for...

Always mystified how Florida St is ranked above RU on USNW when all my friends from Florida tell me how lightly regarded the school is academically.

I feel like UF alums look at FSU the same way Michigan alums look at Sparty, as a little brother.

When I lived in Los Angeles 15 years ago, USC was considered crap and not to be compared to Cal-Berkley, UCLA and Stanford. I laugh every time I see rankings like this and they are in the Top 25. My assumption is they are paying off the ranking services (and that FSU does the same).

The two most likely Big Ten expansion targets are Stanford and Cal-Berkley (after Notre Dame, and then followed by Virginia and North Carolina). If the Big Ten had any interest in Oregon or Washington, they'd already be in the conference.

Interesting to see the conference distribution of the top 25 after expansion
Ivy 8
UAA 5 (DIII Ivy)
B1G 4
ACC 3
Pac 2
Depending on if/when the B1G expands more, it could scoop the 2 Pac's (Stanford, Cal), or maybe ND and UVA and clearly become THE sports/academic conference.

I feel like it's no more objective and quantifiable than the "best movies" thread on this forum...

Not sure re paying them off, but knowing the metrics for rankings and focusing on them to improve

Re lightly regarded, they’ve come a long way in the last 30 years. Not Ivy, not mini Ivy, but continuing to trend up

Fact is more kids than ever are trying to get into RU. Up in Bergen County more kids than ever going to RU.
South Jersey kids are trying to get into RU-NB as well which makes a lot of sense because their only other instate options are what...Rowan? Stockton? An inflated/overhyped TCNJ? Rowan has gotten better but still can't hold a candle academically to Rutgers-NB. And out of state options are Temple, Delaware who are solid schools but you are paying OOS tuition rates for a weaker degree. I won't include schools like Nova or St. Joe's as they attract students that wouldn't be interested in RU-NB. To me the only Northeast public schools that are on RU's level are Maryland and Pitt.

I live in Woodcliff Lake and I see less kids interested in RU than any of the other big ten schools.

Why even make that statement on a RU board?? Are your kids or grand kids in high school ? Mine are and live in what are condidered very wealthy Bergen County towns. This year more than 15 or so chose RU in one of those high schools. Most of those were admitted to Maryland and PSU but chose RU. Unless you're a RU detractor try to praise RU rather than belittle it.

in 2008 (15 years ago) the University of Southern California was ranked No. 27 among national universities by USNWR, just a spot or two behind UCLA. They have pretty consistently remained in the 20s every year since then, usually relatively close to UCLA. To look at a different ranking using different methodologies, Forbes magazine had USC at No. 21 in the nation last year. While not Stanford or Berkeley (not many colleges are), it is a fine private university. I was today old when I first heard USC referred to as a "crap" school.

I know what the rankings are and were. What I'm saying is the school's academic reputation in the local area was in the toilet. USC was viewed as the academic equivalent to FSU, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Colorado, etc. Then all of a sudden, a whole mess of football factories moved up dramatically in the rankings ($$$).

Another reason I don’t like Jimbo is bc he didn’t care about academics - to the point where it was such an issue when Willie took over they had multiple guys in danger of becoming academicly ineligible, losing scholarships, etc

Mike cares about education and thankfully this is no longer an issue - the team had one of, if not the, highest GPA in program history recently

So does anyone graduate from State Penn? Graduation rate is not available.

Now I know why the cheer is: We Are.....State Penn. Must need reminders.

Glad RU is ranked so high in the poll.

If I remember correctly, Nebraska suffers from not having a medical school associated with the school anymore by rankings. It's part of why they're not AAU. It's considered more "Separate" than at other B1G schools. They also have a high acceptance rate (81%) and a low graduation rate (64%) with a relatively small undergraduate enrollment (20k). They are the only school in the big ten with a graduation rate below 70%, and there are only two others below 80%.

Oregon also does very, very little research compared to its peers. For comparison, Rutgers does more research than the rest of the schools in the state of New Jersey, and we're 3rd from the bottom in the B1G.

South Jersey kids are trying to get into RU-NB as well which makes a lot of sense because their only other instate options are what...Rowan? Stockton? An inflated/overhyped TCNJ? It says a lot that you didn't even mention Rutgers Camden or Newark before Stockton. Rowan has excellent engineering, and TCNJ is actually a really nice school; my cousin went there and I think it alternately gets a lot of hate and love.

I used to work in admissions, and you would be amazed at how many students were surprised when they didn't get into RU-NB. "But it was my safety school" isn't going to help you get in.

That may have been true 10-15 yrs ago but definitely not the case now. FSU has been creeping up the rankings for a while and are about to pass Miami. UF is far and away the top choice down here but FSU has become the next best option.

That RU/PSU breakout sounds like the breakout of a school like Shawnee/Cherokee/Lenape but 300 kids I’ll go with Moorestown hs.

I bet this is a big reason why so many NJ folks don’t like Rutgers or support/follow their state university for athletics.

I’m sure each year there are thousands of kids who apply to Rutgers for the hell of it or with little interest in going and when they don’t get in they can’t believe it. A lot of these kids are probably going to Rowan, UDel, Temple, JMU, WVU.

Then you obviously have your other population of NJ kids and their parents who think they’re above Rutgers and their kids must go to schools like TCNJ, Penn State, Michigan, Boston College, Villanova, Clemson, College of Charleston etc.
