Bring Back LOTS

Another thread locked down as people do want to debate issues. People who have no inclination to discuss such matters never have to see it if there is LOTS board. Time to bring it back.

Wasn't our call. On3 told JD they would not allow the site.
Disagree…why does RU have a Current Events board on their On3 platform? JD admitted he wanted no part of it.

It’s funny that the same two or three posters that used to hijack the LOTS threads with second grade targeted behavior, do it here anytime you start a sports post that has adjacent social implications.

It’s too bad because there were some smart and experienced posters and there were a lot of good discussions, knowledge share and debate. EV’s, healthcare, investment advice, travel, books, etc. All gone along with dozens of good posters that disappeared or rarely post.

I'll reach out to JD again. But not sure it's going to matter. On3 told him no originally when he asked.

While I did enjoy OT discussions back when we had an LOT board, at this time, today, I have no interest. Our political arena is a cesspool, and I see no reason to think we are any different than the rest of America. Both sides swing way to far.
I guess I have a different view.

First of all, if you don't care for a LOTS board, you don't have to read it or participate in it.

Second, the RU CE Board is a cesspool, but it's always been a cesspool...even their MBB and MFB forums are awful, but that's on the moderators. There are no rules and I almost think they encourage the behavior.

Third, I agree the extremes on both sides take the air out of the room in politics, the MSM and social media. But does that mean that you give up on finding balanced sources or discuss differences (or learn from each other?). I'm not interested in being the victim to extremes.

There are balanced and moderate news sources (like Axios or NewsNation), or you can use that $1,000 computer we have in our pockets get our news. I go back to LOTS and felt there were a wide spectrum of views and opinions and the discussions were mostly respectful (less a few that were only capable of hurling insults or carpet bomb tweets). For instance, I disagree with merge and cern on many issues, but respected their POV. When we give up the forums to discuss like adults to the children, we've lost. And it's one of the reasons the traffic (and $$$) on this board has plummeted. Dan has done a great job upholding the standards on this board by locking threads, warning and cancelling members when necessary. Just do the same with LOTS and it'll be fine.

Go Giants!

Yes, I can just ignore it, and if it was resurrected, I would not object. I just see no reason to think that we are the one anonymous group that would avoid the bs that fills every other messaging platform.

Imo, back under Rivals, the RU board was tons better than ours. Far more informed posters on both sides. I actually became friendly with a rightwing poster due to our divergent views, RU78College. Tragically, he died a very early death. Good man was he.

We are all the victims of extremes from both sides. This has happened already.

Instead of LOTS can we call it Oof Madone and like an SNL kit you have to either start or end your post with Oof Madone

an example would be:

Oof Madone, gas prices are crazy, will the extra costs in flight tickets take away from the NIL piggy bank?

And then we can watch it turn political from there

If LOTS would offload a fraction of the absolute garbage posts that have made this board unreadable, I'd be on board. Since Dan stepped back, the negative axe-grinders have ruled the day here. Clown show. The new sheriff laid down the law for a day, now it's NJ.com.
Don’t forget, an old timer got banned for literally nothing.

What’s next, a guy gets wacked for wearing the wrong shoes?

The RU board is a complete cesspool, you don't want one.
On the contrary, we would have a place to confine all that garbage. I almost never looked at our old LOTS board, unless I clicked it accidentally on the drop-down, and thirty seconds of reading would be enough to commit to not making that mistake again. But it was off of this board, which is all I care about. Reading a thread here that involves complex or nuanced social issues is like watching people eat broth with chopsticks.

Two things can be true. On3 told me I could only have one board, the pay board. I fought for the free board to stay, LOTS was too much and I’m fine with that because that content has no place here. You can go pretty much anywhere else on the internet to talk about those topics, don’t do it here. Stop hijacking threads, especially the mess that every wnba thread turns into. Threads that go sideways will continue to be locked.

This is where your viewpoint doesn’t see the benefit of a LOTS board. People don’t want to discuss these issues with just anyone. They want to discuss it with members of the community. In this case the Seton Hall community. You have a built up desire with the members of the board who want to discuss these issues. Yes, some can be distasteful. But so what? Isn’t that the purpose of free speech? But u miss the value of discourse on topics to get counter point of views. I am sure I am not the only one who stopped paying due to this stand.

Btw, did you question it why Rutgers has such a board and we do not? Or did you not question it because your vision of this board lined up perfectly with what on3 wanted?

You’re right. I don’t see the value so I’ll say it again, go anywhere else to talk about that junk. LOTS isn’t coming back.

Here is an idea instead of locking a thread, actually be a message board administrator/moderator and censor displayed thought that you believe crosses the boundary of what the message board ethics and decorum is

Most of the banter was fun. Went off the rails a few times for sure, but overall it was far better than most other sites where people who are diametrically opposed debate current political issues.

The timing just sucked. It's really hard for me to care about college basketball and recruiting in the current NIL environment now so visits to this site which used to be many times per day are down to maybe once a week.

While I was not much of a contributor on most topics on LOTS, I did read most threads that interested me.

Most were pretty civil, lot of banter back and forth, sometimes going on and on too much, but that is what it was. Not too much traffic on LOTS, so you got the same people posting often, similar to how threads get hijacked these days by same posters. The political issues seem a little hotter these days for many, so that is why keeping that stuff off the main board is a good thing.

I'm perfectly aligned with that, but since that sewage (and lots of other general shitposting) tends to seep into this space, I also wouldn't be opposed to that kind of board here. But I get it.

My advice for the posters who really want LOTS back is for someone to volunteer their time and effort to start a Seton Hall Community Current Events Discussion Board elsewhere.

Its very simple to create one with Wordpress, ProBoards, Bettermode or other platforms. Or just start one on an existing discussion site like Reddit. That way you can choose your own rules and to moderate or not.

I respect JD's decision to not want to add extra work on top of current demand to moderate another forum. Moderating the Trove and the Pirate Crew are more than enough time and effort, I wouldn't want to have to add a 3rd forum take away from his efforts to improve the 2 sites which bring all of us here.

Great post and I will take it one step further. Not only is that a community but in many ways it was a trusted community. There were posters I ended up meeting at games, continued our discussions via email or phone, even looked at opportunities and did business with some. Great way to advance the depth, relationships, and leverage using the Seton Hall community. That’s a bond we all shared….SHU. I would’ve never known with some of these guys did outside of basketball unless it was for LOTS. That’s all gone and you will never get it back.

And without a trusted community, you are just a message board. You’re dead in the water.

This board is not a passion of J.D. like it was for Dan. It’s a job…. I get it. Traffic and paying members are down considerably because it’s been reduced to a monolithic message board. He doesn’t even care about the customers. Great job.

This offers the least path of resistance, is already there, and is easily findable.
Probably good idea, but I am not sure that would solve problem here about hijacking threads, the beauty of the LOTS is people here are engaged and all on the same site and if topics that get out of hand or about to get out of hand could be moved to LOTS easily be admins.

You had phone conversations and did business with people you had no prior connection to just because of LOTS?

The problem is also that "political views" are converging with sports like never before so it shows up on the free board very easily, especially with no LOTS board and during the off-season when there’s little to talk about.

This comment is a joke and I would not expect anything else from you.

The Trove broke a ton of news this offseason, had interviews with Felt, Carino, Popkin and others.

Constantly broke news regarding summer workouts which I saw nowhere else.

If that's not worth $10.00 a month in the offseason then you have a choice instead of criticizing the hard work done on the Trove.

When you were editor and chief and head moderator did the amount of paid subscribers ever influence what you did or did not provide on that site known as trovr. I will be generous and say if 200-300 people cared about any summer workout in any era of this program it would be a lot.

Who is would provide summer workout news? Carino, Zagoria, Rothstein? They all would need an invite or given such info.

If the trove was a true side hustle please disclose your annual compensation figures by Rivals and On3 and total income tax filings you had over the time.

Dan it was your passion bucket in semi and then full retirement and yes it was a passionate hobby and very time consuming for sure.

You are changing your tune. The Trove is not peanuts as you stated. It encompasses hard work to get any info in the offseason. It does the same when talking about portal commitments and setting up interviews.

And as for money earned. My pay this spring, summer and fall was the same as yours.

Nope did not change my tune. Perhaps peanuts was not properly explained. Let me add the context...it is less of a cost by month and annually than many other subscriptions. More it was a reply to hall85 and his line of disagreement with JD and JD's prior post.
