If I'm wrong, please correct me. I fear staying wrong more than being wrong temporarily. I know my stats for Tom Brown are 2 wins less and two losses more than Chris Hobbs' records...but I would have to have access to his files to see where.
I also know I don't have any data for pre 1960...thus missing data for Bill Barefoot, and our first head coach Mr. McGraw.
I show Tom Brown's record as 330-98-6. 113-30-5 (1966-1978) + 217-68-1 (1986-2007). I believe his statue at the stadium shows 330 wins, but I don't remember for sure. The 330 wins at the time were the most wins at one school in the history of NC high school football. He had more wins (22 ?) at Bunker Hill during his short time there.
The SD-7 2A conference began in 1959. Maiden was 7-3 that season under Bill Barefoot. I show Maiden's record since (and including 1959) as 564-190-10. In 64 years Maiden has won or shared 28 conference championships, won 2 state championships (1971, 1978) and one western state championship (1992).
The year prior to the forming of the SD-7 2A conference (1958), Maiden had one of its worst seasons in school history. They finished 2-6-2. Bill Barefoot did not coach in 1961 or 1962. I believe he left to try his hand at selling insurance. I might be wrong, but I show coach Allen LaTorre being HC in only one of those two seasons, going 8-1-1 in 1962. He left coaching and worked for many years at MDI in Hickory. Maiden went 7-2-1 in 1961. I believe the HC in 1961 may have been Jim Holly, but, again, not 100% sure. Bill Barefoot did return '63-'65. Maiden played Sylva-Webster for the "state championship" in 1965 and lost 26-13. In those days the 2A classification had four "state" champions (East, Mid East, Mid West, and West). Each winner was considered a state champion because you were only allowed to play two playoff games, and in doing so you had gone as far as you could go.
