Charlie Strong to RU?????

Heard this rumor today from a New Jersey Sportswriter. Sorry if it has already been mentioned. Charlie Strong will be fired after the last Texas game, they will throw enough money (whatever it takes) at Saban and Meyer until one of them takes the UT job. Coach Strong has a relationship with Julie from their 'Ville days and he is fully aware of the facilities and the fertile recruiting grounds in state.

Now that's as good a rumor as any other I've read. (and I didn't hear it at Subway)

If Texas fires Charlie Strong, they deserve what they get. Mack Brown left the cupboard so bare in Austin that Bill Belichik couldn't have won there the past two years. And I think a lot of people who don't wear ten-gallon hats realize this, so he will have options, no matter what.

I wouldn't rely on any rumors about a specific candidate at this point in time. We still haven't fired Flood. Let's get that done first.

As far as Strong goes, I think he would be out of reach given his buyout and the other schools who will be in the market. Plus, he hasn't been fired either.

Urban Meyer is not leaving Ohio State this year.

Likely not, there are lots of posts on this on Twitter:

The rumor is that both sides are trying to call each other's bluff. Texas would want him gone but doesn't want to pay him by firing him, and hopes he would take one of the open jobs like Miami, while schools that want him want to see if Texas will fire him first to avoid the huge buyout.

Either way, it seems to be a game played at a table whose minimum bet is way beyond RU's chips.

Echo to the point about Strong inheriting nothing from Mack Brown. He has to rebuild one class at a time. They'll be very good next year - and even better when his first class reaches Senior/RS JR level.

In a freaking heartbeat. He's a guy I wouldn't think twice about hiring. But rumors are just rumors.

How would these contract buyouts likely work at schools like UT? Any money we pay here would offset his UT contract? Would he forfeit his UT $ if he took a job elsewhere? Etc.

I just laughed soda out my nose.

Did it burn because the coffee sure burned mine.

The only way this makes sense is if Texas does fire him and he has no other options out there.

One thing about Rutgers to consider. What school has shown more patience with their HC's? Flood and even Schiano early on may not have lasted elsewhere. If you want a place to build your own program with your own identity, RU is worth a look.

Why would Saban or Meyer leave where they are for texas? Ohio state and Alabama could easily match any salary texas is willing to offer.

I don't think we could afford Strong but I think Herman might hire Tony Levine the former Houston head coach, career record 21-17, who was also at Louisville. No one has mentioned his name.

This was their plan when they fired Mack Brown and it didnt work then either. Championship coaches dont need to go to Texas to win championships and the extra money probalby isnt worth the effort it will take to rebuild.

As for Strong. Not able to afford him means what? Hes not going to get close to his Texas salary at his next gig, and I doubt there will be a strong push from other schools to get him. Not that I would be sure we could get him - but I think we would have a good shot - better than alot of other coaches people mention on this board - and unlike the MAC coaches of the month that alot of this board wants, at least he won at the BCS level. I can be pretty certain that he would revive our ailing defense.

Wait, wait, WAIT!!! We've been told there is a list of 3, and ONLY 3, names that will be hired from so....IMHO...we should make 100% sure that Charlie is on THAT list before we have this conversation. [thumb2][thumb2][thumb2]

Texas is quite rich but also quite full of themselves.

Why would Meyer leave OSU to coach Texas? What possible motivation? Are they going to offer him so much more than OSU that he can't refuse? I would think OSU would counter anything. And OSU right now is in far better shape. Sorry Texas but OSU is a better job.

Same with Saban. Why would he leave? The only thing I can think of there is that Austin, TX is a far more desirable place to reside.

Why not bring John L. Smith as part of the package? He was at Louisville too.

Charlie Strong four of the last six years, 7-6, 7-6, 6-7, 4-6. Nothing without Teddy Bridgewater. Hire Bobby Petrino. Real winner at Louisville.

Charlie Strong to RU because of his relationship with Julie at UL ? OMG now I know that we are living in an alternate universe. Too funny !

Can we get Rick Pitino too ?

Strong will go to Miami if let go, he was even asked directly about that rumor (which he laughed off). But since this seems to be a thread of absolutely insanely impossible choices, I would rather have Bill Cohwer. Seriously.

You'll have to ask King High apparently he knows but refuses to let the big secret out. See linked thread.

Thanks guy. Not thrilled with the Hermann part as you HAVE to hire an AD first and that'd take months, screwing RU and putting the program even further behind the curve.

That said, coming over to the Dark Side hasn't been nearly as painful as I expected. I even got a welcome of sorts from 5781 lol. .

You dont have to hire the AD first. People said the same thing with BB, and of course, the people in charge werent morons - they recognized that waiting was worse than making a somewhat less informed decisions, or having some candidates not be interested.

If they fire both they will still hire a FB coach in December. It might not be as quick or as good as if Herman were still here, but they arent waiting until they get a new AD in February to hire the coach.

Let it be known that I'm not in the "yeah, I believe that..." group on his comments. I have a very, very hard time believing that we have limited ourselves to three choices already. We'll see, I've heard completely different things from other sources, so who knows.

Strong is a B list coach. Flood isn't on a list.

You just never know who will pan out, well except we did know in our case, but every opportunity is different. Strong would be a gigantic improvement. We should be so lucky. And if he doesn't work out, so be it. At least we'd be trying.

STRONG MAKES $5,000,000 PER YEAR. Yea he's going to come here. We will pay him around $2 million a year but we'll throw in EZPass, unlimited Fat sandwiches, a beach pass to Belmar for the summer, Somerset Patriots season tickets, NJ Devils season tickets, and free Uber rides to make up for the other $3 million paycheck. Shmucks

Way to always stay classy Chip. Typical. You and others ripped me yesterday for being too positive yet every one of your posts is pure misery no matter what the topic is. I think we all know who the real shmuck is.

No one really thinks Strong would leave Texas to come here. They're talking about what he'd do if fired.
