You’re a good poster on here, so please don't take anything I say here the wrong way.
To answer your question, I feel like Mark Pope is paying for the debt Cal created his last 4 years.
I don't think Pope's results should result in most of the hateful comments he's been getting. He had a bad year last year and every coach has a bad year. The pieces didn’t fit (his fault), but he still had plenty of highlights.
Too many people focus on year 2 and refuse to talk about year 1. Pope showed what he could do when he had a full roster and heck, he still beat some damn good teams with key players out/hobbled. That was a FF caliber team and it was built out of mid major kids. That's good coaching and roster construction.
As far as this kid he just landed. It’s awesome, Pope finally caught a really big fish outside of Hampton, Milan, Brea, Carr etc… , but it doesn’t make up for all the ones that got away. Maybe this is the start of better recruiting.
Better recruiting will firm up with winning & seeing players get better under him, first and foremost.
There have been a lot of dings in recruiting that coaches can negatively recruit against. He brought in a 20th ranked 5* and saw him leave after a year and become the worst 5* of his class. Lewis signed then decommitted.
It can all start here - he's got some good kids, really good kids this year. Milan, Alex, Zoom and Malachi are great, great kids. Make them better throughout the year. Get Milan and Malachi to the draft.
This draft is wide open. Caleb Holt has been consistently ranked 2-3 and he ain't very good. Win some games, show you're improving your players, get them to crest in March and go on a little run and perception can shift quick.
Look at Hurley - he lost in the first round to New Mexico State in 2022, some were saying he was on the hot seat. In two years, TWO YEARS, he was called the best coach in the sport. Winning heals all, especially winning in March.
