Surprised it doesn’t happen every game, he’s such a jerk on the sidelines.

Did not look like a foul. Danny is wrong. For his own health he needs to reign himself in.

His father was notoriously hard on his players. My friend once scrimmaged a great St. Anthony's team in the 90s, and he said they could not believe how verbally abusive Hurley Sr. was to his players.

All that said, the man is a saint in my book. He literally saved thousands of kids lives, and kept that school running for years through his own work and fundraising. I know coaches who attended his basketball clinics where the checks were made out to "St. Anthony's". He didn't take a dime. If you ever want to read a terrific sports book, Woj's "Miracle of St. Anthony" is a must. The stories told are awesome and give great insight into the man. He believed he had to be as hard as he was on his players because, given most of their backgrounds, if he let them off the hook for a second they would get into trouble and go down the wrong path. Instead, he got literally all those kids into colleges of different types, even as team managers, because so many college head coaches would do anything to make him happy (they wanted his players) and because they respected him so much. There is a great documentary or two out there as well worth watching for any sport fan.

Read the book years ago. It’s great and your comments above are all accurate. The reason why the other high school coaches hated him though was because he recruited the best players from the public schools to St Anthony’s and then beat them with kids who were or would have been at their schools. Complicated but he impacted positively hundreds of kids lives.

No doubt, like all coaches, he wanted to win. So he was going to get players if he could. From a technical standpoint, I've read statements from numerous college or even NBA coaches who consider him "upper echelon" at any level from a coaching standpoint.

I saw one on line half time outburst where Hurley Sr. berated his players (motiivated them?) with a barage of F bombs. My initial thought was had he been a public school coach/teacher/employee he would have been out on the street within 24 hours. Sadly, for all his success, Danny's coaching career is going to end badly.

He was hard on them, but it was tough love. I personally know of many cases where he helped kids and their families financially.

Did he call a foul on you?
He had kind things to say about Sha too. My wife was in absolute disbelief that I could on the spot stop on a dime and place him as a referee on tv. But he does sort of have a distinctive look. Great hair for his age. I don't think he's lost a single follicle

The old man was 10x worse. Everybody in the state hated him, especially the other JC schools.
That schedule was not playing many jersey city schools during their seasons. I am sure they had no issues inviting him to speak at clinics though.

If anyone wants to see the backend of Hurley Sr career watch the street stops here or the hbo/showtime i forget which docuseries that documented the last season before it was known the school would close

A friend of mine has a cousin who grew up with Bob Sr in JC. Not pals, but friendly. Thru another group of jc friends of his, we got season tickets for the 92 and 93 seasons. We sat with 4 or 5 other JC guys, one of whom controlled the tickets.

First time Dan goes into a game, one of the guys stands up and rips Dan apart. Calls him a "ham and egger". Going crazy ripping Dan. My friends cousin gave us the hi sign to ignore them, and when we were out of the seats, told me one of the guys was the HC of a good public school team, and he hated Bob Sr These guys ripped Dan long and hard all season. And were not the kind of guys you told to shut up lol Looked like Lee J Cobbs lackies in On the Waterfront lol.

The Big East front office/Val punked out yet again, Hurley did make some contact with the ref, a real no-no.

Also thought he was improper to scream at Kimani Young twice, "Don't f'ing touch me!"
A fine doesn't hurt him or the team. Suspending him loses real value and valuable to the team. He should be suspended for a league game next season.

He has to tone it down. When he loses it, he's completely over the top. You hear him in interviews and he makes so much common sense and has great things to say. But then on the sideline he's F'n crazy. Bad look for him - hope Mrs. Hurley gives it to him.

Weak Big East leadership reared its ugly head again. Have to think the officials are not pleased with the way this was handled.

I’m surprised they didn’t give him a game for that. He clearly made contact w the official.

Maybe there was a different angle or the official said he didn’t touch him despite what the video appears to show.

or simply Val and Co. didn’t want to dole out any suspecting because Uconn and Hurley are so important to the league

No excuse for his sophomoric (at best) behavior. Did others notice even Andrew came from behind the bench to the court to try to reign him in.

With one second remaining, though, could refs have just walked as far away as possible from a raving lunatic-at-the-time and let his coaches try to control him. Did the first T, in fact, completely push him over the edge? Might the refs have possibly considered this if it were at Gampell where a really, really ugly scene might have unfolded?
