In 2012 USC was ranked #1 preseason and finished unranked, something that hadn't been done since the 60's. I don't think a coach who underachieved with that kind of talent is going to be a world beater with UK's level of talent.

I think you are missing the fact that it's a legal liability - which costs money 9 times out of 10 when the employer is sued. That's why is forbidden. To minimize risk and exposure to lawsuits.

I hope he is gone. I know that is a bold, unpopular thing to say considering the rumors. Get rid of this "nice guy" who sucks at football coaching and let's hit reset yet AGAIN at UK. Now if this is what happened I think anyone who has any delusions of UK going after a guy with a controversial past (Tressel or Briles) can dream on a bit there. I doubt UK would touch either if they are gonna fire Stoops for this (if all true).
If you did it for them, you'd have to do it for everybody, and if you allow all of your leaders to fraternize (and especially have relations) with their subordinates, then you're creating a dangerous culture where rule after rule will slowly start to become inapplicable to certain people within the university, regardless of capacity. It's actually illegal in the military as another example of an organization that doesn't allow this, and depending on the severity, you can end up in prison for up to 2 years for it, to go along with a dishonorable discharge (Article 134 of UCMJ).
Just because these two could possibly (and not definitely, which is important to note) be safe and separate relationship from work. does not mean that you can go on a limb and just assume that they will be, while maintaining a smoothly functioning work environment.
That's a good reason, but $12 million is a good reason to not fire him or make sure you have dirt on him.

What reasoning did the media use to say they should be ranked number 1? depleted squad never showed #1 potential prior to that preseason ranking. Hadn't been to a bowl game in a couple of years due to probation. etc

Briles I can agree the bridge to Stoops sexual dismissal to a guy who apparently buried evidence on his own players involving sexual crimes would be hard to do.
But Tressel has none of this in his past. His transgressions involve having players sell jerseys, etc.. for tattoos and the Maurice Clarett saga. And Tressel apparently knew and didn't report it.
Tressel is a far reach from Briles (or Petrino for that much).

But with Mitch Barnhart as AD anything is possible. Only Mitch could hire a coach who combined Bobby Petrino's morals with Mark Stoops lack of coaching ability.

I just had an ex-player of mine who is one of the kinesiology majors and a student trainer or whatever text me and tell me that his friends who are trainers are saying it's true. Seems like they are just basing on it on rumors too, though. He couldn't give me a direct source that would make me believe it.
I cannot believe that I will possibly have to witness another football program reset. It's truly unbelievable.
But, I thank God for the fact that this very well may be the last reset depending upon what happens to the AD. If he goes, I pray that this university finds someone who understands how important collegiate athletics is to the life of the university and its surrounding community. If someone had to hold his hand while he hired Cal, then this situation should be his final act as the UK AD. He's culpable for the bad Gillispie and, now, the embarrassing Stoops hirings.
