I knew it was a big win for us, but I didn't know the real significance of that game until reading that. I had no idea they had come into the game having won 28 straight games and two national championships in that span. Didn't know that they weren't number one again for the next 28 years.

Wow.

Wow.

That is inaccurate. Alabama won the national championship again in 1992, so they were out of the #1 spot for 12 years, at most.

Also, November 1, 1980 was a day of upsets. #2 UCLA lost to Oregon, and #3 Baylor lost to San Jose State. That moved #4 Notre Dame up to No. 1, but they would tie Georgia Tech the next weekend.

I may be wrong about this, but I think he is trying to say that after the 1980 game, Bama wasn't ranked #1 in a regular season poll for 28 years. The 1992 team was never ranked #1. They played Miami as the #2 team.

Right. I took it to mean regular season polls too. I was aware that they had won a national championship within that time span.

To help make your point. A friend and I took 8 30-50yd line tickets to the game. Stood around outside the stadium for a few minutes trying to sell them and ended up saying 17 it and giving the 6 unused tickets to some kids selling programs. Hardly anyone believed we had a chance and many just didn`t go. Somebody had beaten us pretty bad the week before if I remember correctly.

I know someone that was on an airliner in the air at the time that game was over. The flight didn't start or end in Mississippi. The piloit came on the PA and announced the score. He had got it from the air traffic controller. That was BIG news. I was a HS Sr.

I will never forget that day. My brother, also an MSU grad but much older than me (I was 11), and I were driving through Natchez listening to the game(hometown). When the game ended, we were stopped at a traffic light. He lost it. He jumped out of the truck and ran around it at least 10 times yelling, "The tide rolled out!". I was scared to death but everyone at the light seemed as fired up as him. They were cheering him on.

When we win this weekend, I might take a few laps around my car for old times sake.

You want to really understand how dominant Alabama was when we beat them in 1980? They had only lost 11 games in 10 years. And 3 of those were in 1976.

USM had beaten the crap out of us at homecoming. 42-14. It was a miserable game.
