I knew it was a big win for us, but I didn't know the real significance of that game until reading that. I had no idea they had come into the game having won 28 straight games and two national championships in that span. Didn't know that they weren't number one again for the next 28 years.

I may be wrong about this, but I think he is trying to say that after the 1980 game, Bama wasn't ranked #1 in a regular season poll for 28 years. The 1992 team was never ranked #1. They played Miami as the #2 team.
USM had beaten the crap out of us at homecoming. 42-14. It was a miserable game.To help make your point. A friend and I took 8 30-50yd line tickets to the game. Stood around outside the stadium for a few minutes trying to sell them and ended up saying 17 it and giving the 6 unused tickets to some kids selling programs. Hardly anyone believed we had a chance and many just didn`t go. Somebody had beaten us pretty bad the week before if I remember correctly.
