Future Football Games Announced

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 5, 2017) –West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has announced the completion of the Mountaineers non-conference football schedules through 2021 with the addition of four games, highlighted by the 2020 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game against Florida State.

The Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game against the Seminoles will be played at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, to open the season on Sept. 5 and will be televised by ESPN or ABC. This will mark the second time that West Virginia will participate in the kickoff event, facing Alabama in the 2014 game in the Georgia Dome. The Crimson Tide won the game, 33-23.

It also will be the fourth meeting with the Seminoles, having faced FSU in the 1982, 2004 and 2010 Gator Bowls.

“The Mountaineers look forward to returning to the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, and playing in Atlanta’s new premier sports venue,” Lyons said. “We all know that West Virginia and Florida State have met in bowl games before, but this provides a quality regular season matchup for both teams on a national stage. The game will be a great chance for the two fan bases to make a road trip to Atlanta and get the 2020 season started.”

Lyons also added three future games to be played at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, completing the non-conference schedules through the 2021 season: Youngstown State on Sept. 8, 2018, James Madison on Aug. 31, 2019 and Indiana State on Sept. 11, 2021.

The Mountaineers will play host to Youngstown State for the third time in the series, defeating the Penguins in 1938 (27-7) and in 2016 (38-21).

This also will be the third meeting against James Madison with WVU winning 45-10 in 2004 in Morgantown and 42-12 in 2012 in Landover, Md., at FedExField.

The 2021 meeting marks the first meeting with the Sycamores.

Other future non-conference opponents include Pitt and Virginia Tech in 2022, Penn State and Pitt in 2023 and 2024 and Pitt in 2025.

Nice to see the matchup with Fla St confirmed...look forward to that one. Followed by a bunch of junkball....am I wrong in thinking the AD's goal was to take this Div II crap off the schedule down the road? I understand it generates money, however it is simply a glorified exhibition game i'd rather not pay for on my ticket package...I wish they would go play in whatever backwater stadium Indiana St or whomever calls home frankly...

I don't like the 1-aa games. Nothing to gain and SHAME & embarrassment if you lose. Ask Michigan (Appy State) and Iowa (the Bizon firm ND) or VPI (James Madison)

Play someone somewhere somehow above the 1-aa level or FCS even if it's a non money maker, or then quit charging me for season tickets that include that game. I loved it the year WVU vs JMU was at Fed Ex cause I didn't have to pay for it.

Instead of the FCS schools you could play Indiana, Vanderbilt, Duke, BC, W. Ky and C. Michigan and get more bang for the buck you'd be paying anyway. Maybe even upgrade a bit to Kentucky and schedule a home/home, great road trip.

Would happily accept paying for a MAC school etc over Delaware St, Indiana St and the like...at least they are Div I and better for SOS...

I don't think Ind., Vandy, Duke, BC, WKy or CMU would accept a one-game road deal.

I think you mean FBS, right?

Like Missouri? When are we going there?
G5s want home-and-homes now. Missouri: I can’t remember the exact circumstances, but if memory serves correctly they lost a game and scrambled to fill a single hole in the schedule. I could be wring about that.

Notice it says "tentative " at the top, I'll bet that changes between now and then. I'll stand corrected, but if a return game 3 years removed is the price to pay to keep FCS teams off the schedule so be it.
There’s a signed contract. Half the contract has been fulfilled. It’s tentative because some could always back out and pay a buyout. But notice we played a FCS team this year and Mizzou, and we’ll play a a FCS team and Mizzou.

Well, it took Ohio State 10 years and a reminder from WVU to give the Mountaineers a return game. Precedent.

Just look at the AD financial report. Can’t pay for people and stuff without 7 home games. FCS will demand 1 for 1.
Oh I get it...Doesn't mean a can't ***** about it and wish for better....however some years it is 6 home games and some 7...of course I am getting into semantics a bit....
If you've ever tried to sell or even give away tickets for Liberty, or James Madison well...it's a challenge. And I'd rather visit the dentist on Saturday than sit through that junk.

For the right team under the right circumstances I'd do the home and home in a heart beat instead of an FCS opponent; close enough to make travel easy, control all visitors ticket sales and take the gate and a concession %. You may not make money but you'd probably break even and give your SOS and fans a boost.

I think UK would fit the bill, easy driving distance from the fan-base, easy travel for the team, border rival (to an extent) mid-level SEC team (most years). What's not to like if you can make the numbers work?

Kentucky won't do it. They are content with their one big OOC game with Louisville, and desire to play three cupcakes to fulfill their schedule, in hopes of winning 6/7 games to secure a low level bowl game. Has your AD contacted Marshall University? They would probably be interested in a home/home series.

I'm sure you speak to the UK AD daily to garner this insight.

And no, we are trying to eliminate FCS schools from the schedule, not add more.

No need to do so, when you have data readily available:

2012 - Kent, Western Kentucky, Samford, Louisville
2013 - Western Kentucky, Miami, OH, Alabama State, Louisville
2014 - UT Martin, Ohio, Louisiana Monroe, Louisville
2015 - Eastern Kentucky, Charlotte, Louisiana, Louisville
2016 - Southern Miss, New Mexico State, Austin Peay, Louisville
2017 - Southern Miss, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Louisville
