Yes, but he’s not allowed to throw to the middle of the field. The pick 6 was the same 4th down play we ran last week for a TD. Any decent DC scouts that. They were sitting on the play

Couple of incorrect statements, but mostly true. The false:well I'll gladly eat crow the first time I'm wrong.
This board can't get past 'the guy' regardless of position or coach. It's unbelievable to watch the mental gymnastics our fans go through to try and justify a view or belief. For weeks all we heard was that stupid metric for qb play and I laughed and argued it was worthless
Gav is not accurate
Gav does not have BIG level arm strength
Our receivers don't get the ball, don't get separation, run piss poor routes and run blocking sucks
Oline blows, sorry but absolutely blows
our strength is our rb set but that alone is not enough to win on offense
play calling is better but it's still not aggressive enough and very questionable at key times
D is good overall but D line doesn't get enough downfield push or penetration and corners can't cover long enough matter.
coaching is a absolute abomination and you can take your pick where. Greg won't be here after next year with this kind of management. The portal and OC fiasco was the last straw, he's got to put up or move on
He absolutely will start next here year. GS is all in with him, even if it means firing another OC.I'm not quick to criticize. But I'm criticizing. Unless there is major improvement, I don't see Gavin starting next year.
Ridiculous. He absolutely will start next here year. GS is all in with him, even if it means firing another OC.
Temple. The 1st TD was GW hitting the RB out off the backfield in stride for 35 yds TD.which games did the RBs score on short passes out of the backfield for big gains?
Im not being argumentative. I'm genuinely asking. I don't remember this happening this season. I remember several off target throws and/or throws with too much on them though which were lost downs/opportunities.
Totally false and a ridiculous post.He absolutely will start next here year. GS is all in with him, even if it means firing another OC.
Gavin is a decent runner but at year three at what point maybe it’s not the coaching but rather Gavin’s accuracy that’s the issue. There are better QBs on this team. That's ok right?
It’s not ridiculous at all. There’s much more to QB1 decisions than winning. Were he to switch QBs and start over next year with someone else he’d be admitting a massive mistake and leaving himself open to even more criticism. And it’s not just him. That’s what leaders often resort to. He absolutely will not let that happen at all costs, especially as his 8 yr free lunch gets closer to the end. And don’t forget how stubborn he is.Totally false and a ridiculous post.
I think he’s legit. Though not particularly good. Yet. Talent is there for significantly more upside. As of now, very true. Not a legit D1 QB yet.
Get a grip, it was a mistake. Gavin is coming along fine. He is getting experience. He looks light years better than last year, where he looked rattled on every play. Not saying Wimsatt is awful but he's one of the main reasons we lost that game. The pick 6 is inexcusable.
Like I said before, hes been a net positive in every other game besides the Wisconsin game. That play is a 10-14 point swing and absolutely cost us the game. It's one thing if Gavin is a playmaker and goes out and throws for 200 yards and 3 TDs after that pick but he can't do that yet. His job is to manage the offense and not make mistakes. He failed at his job this past week.Get a grip, it was a mistake. Gavin is coming along fine. He is getting experience. Ok, so when are our fans going to understand college eligibility? Gavin is an Upper classman, a junior, you’re talking about him as ‘the kid’ over Simon as though we have so much more time to develop. Gavin’s got 1 year left after this year. He’s not a kid who just stepped onto campus anymore. For context, he’s got the same amount of eligibility remaining as JJ McCarthy and a full year LESS than Drew Allar.
Gavin’s no ‘kid’ anymore in cfb terms. He’s got a year and a half of eligibility left
It might have won them the game against a 3-1 Wisconsin if that pick 6 doesn't happen. That might have won games 30 years ago but in todays game you need production out of the QB position. That is why Rutgers offense continues to struggle.
But it did happen. We might have won if Mordecai threw a pick 6, but he didn’t.It might have won them the game against a 3-1 Wisconsin if that pick 6 doesn't happen.
For sure. But they were crisp, confident passes during non-garbage time play. We’ve seen Evan plenty. We know what he can do. Look - nobody was harder on him than me last year. I considered him a 3rd string because that’s what he was last year on a team that couldn’t consistently stop the pass rush against anyone halfway decent. I’m starting to become cautiously optimistic that we’ve grown a lot in this facet of the game though. We’ve played enough decent defenses now to start to be able to believe that the pass blocking is a lot better than it was last year. And it was improved last year too, from previous years, but it wasn’t good enough to entrust the ball with a non runner who struggles with decision making when pressured. We saw this vs Nebraska. If the OL can consistently give more time though, it opens up some questions in my view. At least if the goal is truly to be 1-0 on a given day.How many passes? Sure it sounds good but you don’t leave Gavin out to dry over a bad pass interception. You give him the next game for certain. You would just like to see a QB controversy.
You're missing the point. The comment was about how our conservative offense isn't going to win us any games. My point is it was actually working until maybe we weren't conservative enough. We probably could have ran it 3 more times at the 4 yard line instead of throwing it to the side of the field with nobody in front of the DB.But it did happen. We might have won if Mordecai threw a pick 6, but he didn’t.
That a good call. I'd forgotten that play.Temple. The 1st TD was GW hitting the RB out off the backfield in stride for 35 yds TD.
Inexcusable is a word with very little wiggle room. See the debate on this play in the camera man hit in the balls thread.Like I said before, hes been a net positive in every other game besides the Wisconsin game. That play is a 10-14 point swing and absolutely cost us the game. It's one thing if Gavin is a playmaker and goes out and throws for 200 yards and 3 TDs after that pick but he can't do that yet. I still support him and think he's going to continue to get better. He probably gives us the best chance to win out of the QBs we have. He absolutely still needs to improve though for us to be anything other than a 500 team.
I bet you his completion to RB % is high if you exclude KM. KM is great at many things, but catching passes is his weakness. GW had a few great passes to AY and JB.That a good call. I'd forgotten that play.
The point is that he misses those throws far more than he makes them when throwing behind the running backs or throwing too hard and making it uncatchable. Simon looked very comfortable laying it out into the flat.
At teh start of this season.. didn't we all say that Gavin has improved? yeah.. this last game he stank up the field. Sorry, Gavin.. but you know you did. You have done better and can do better.I think he’s legit. Though not particularly good. Yet. Talent is there for significantly more upside.
GOR, You think GW's progress is going to be linear? Sorry but right now he is doing what he needs to do, which is get reps and vision on the field. Maybe I am in the minority on this board but I am seeing GW improve overall. Not only Gavin but the entire team is progressing but their growth will not be in a straight line upwards. thee will be setbacks and disappointments along the way.At teh start of this season.. didn't we all say that Gavin has improved? yeah.. this last game he stank up the field. I blame Gleeson. He had him for a couple of years and did not improve him at all.
At this point, I think we need to get Gavin moving.. rolling out. his accuracy inside a pocket is just hit and miss... the longer and harder the throw the more accurate.. oddly enough. The sideline floaters.. touch just isn't there.. I think it is a footwork issue. Same for the short passes. But when he has to zip it in there he will stride forward and look like a real QB putting zip on the ball.
His short passes and sideline stuff.. it looks like it is all-arm to me. He even threw off his backfoot in this last game. His pick-6.. all arm.. and when it is all arm any DB spying on him can see it a mile away. Down in the redzone DBs are not worried about WRs getting behind them.. they can watch a QB and have a general sense of where their man is going. Throwing to wide side... we just got to know what Gavin's strengths and weaknesses are playcall to that. If we had rolled him out to the wide side..what does that DB do? I think he leaves Dremel and moves up to run-stop. Easy TD. And I think rolling him out fairly often would play to his strengths.. it pressures a defense and causes mistakes and I think Wimsatt is as accurate while moving as he is in the pocket. I think he is more comfortable moving. I could be wrong but would love to find out.
no he's improving but is it fast enough, going to be enough, is he going to improve enough to be a competent BIG level qb that we need is the questionGOR, You think GW's progress is going to be linear? You gotta love Rutgers fans, Our team has stunk for so long that the moment we have a competent coach who while not working miracles, is steadily improving the team in arguably the hardest D1 league in the nation, and our fans expect our team to be in the top three in the BIG. Holy shitballs some of you folks expectations are just way out of whack with reality.
while the team has not clicked yet they are getting closer each game. Stop complaining and start supporting our team win, lose or draw.
where did I suggest his progress would be linear? Not sure where you got that. Your post agrees with my take.GOR, You think GW's progress is going to be linear? Greg did not comeback to be a meddling program that has a ceiling of 4-5 wins year… especially in Year 5.It’s not ridiculous at all. There’s much more to QB1 decisions than winning. Were he to switch QBs and start over next year with someone else he’d be admitting a massive mistake and leaving himself open to even more criticism. And it’s not just him. He’s not Saban and doesn’t have a winning history to block any negative pr or job risk. There is no way Schiano admits the mistake. He has to double-down at this point. His job security only goes so far as GW takes him the next two years.
Exactly, as I say often above. It’s not entirely about W & L. He didn’t recruit a QB the year after GW, who’s here bc of NIL.If the sports media was accurate, there is a 6 figure deal to consider too. I don't know how that plays out in the new landscape of college sports. Does it complicate making that change when and if needed?
Add in his rushes as completed passes and he’s at 64.4%. I think that is a fair way to look at a dual threat QB if he’s gaining yards running (and GW has 230 yds rushing). He also has 4 rushing TD’sCant see him being more than a 55% max completion guy.
HUH? He absolutely HAS hit some deep crosses and bombs...Its his intermediate and short passes that his accuracy is exposed...Gavin is good on side line throws where there is one on one coverage also to running backs. Hasn't really hit a deep pass plus has trouble over the middle where there are several defenders. Langan caught a pass over the middle but he was wide open.
This. That’s why I remain shocked that we didn’t work on those vs Wagner.HUH? He absolutely HAS hit some deep crosses and bombs...Its his intermediate and short passes that his accuracy is exposed...
Only the not so smart ones.I'm sure all of us are thinking the same thing.
