I have a question that may have been posed to the Board already so pardon me if that is the case. My understanding is that each school is permitted to spend $20.5mm on athletes per year? Since SHU does not have football, couldn't they theoretically allocate and spend most of that money on college basketball? If so, is SHU capable of spending that much? It would seem to me that SHU will need to consider that if it wants to keep up with the bigger schools, particularly since it does not appear that we are raising significant funds from our collective (or similar organization) to make up the difference.
After all the lawsuits, I believe $20.5M is still the standard but is directly tied to the school’s revenue sharing cap. It excludes separate NIL.
So, while non-football schools could contribute to a higher revenue amount that’s only one pipeline of funding. This was the center of Willard’s problem with Maryland, for context. So he is definitely getting a bigger piece of the pie at Villanova with more from the school. But the non-basketball schools typically have such smaller budgets that getting to even half of that number isn’t even realistic to begin with, unlike football schools.
Seton Hall’s problem in perpetuity is the NIL funding arm. I don’t think the school has the budget to give $10M to basketball but idk. St. John’s maybe gets $5M from the school, then another $8M through NIL, for example. Seton Hall sounds like $6M with $4-5M coming from the school. It’s better than no revenue sharing, you see the difference, but still not enough.
I think that’s right, but I may be missing or wrong, it’s changed so many times.
He's really taken up the mantle that Jay had as being the voice of the league, in terms of talking the league up; this little spiel was no different.
Lets face it, our commissioner doesn't seem all that focused on talking up the league, so we need someone to do it...and no better than a 2X national champ coach...
I was told by 2 separate sources that sju had 7.5 rev and repole et al matched with another 7.5.
I assume the rules allow us to spend 20 mill. But not the balance sheet
