That 76-77 season was one that many thought would get us to the NCAA. Wasn’t meant to be and it was another one and done in the NIT.

That was the big one though. ECAC final with an automatic bid on the line against St John‘s at MSG. Never got closer than that.

Did we make it to the final? Last gane of my college years...first round loss away to Fairfield, Glenn not playing due to that bogus suspension. Don Stukenbroker did his best, with the suburban forwards and Greg. Listened to the game at our apt on Scotland Rd.

Most of you probably won't remember Tynes. But know this, he was nearly unstoppable and played with Mosley, Galis, and Calendrillo, scoring 2059 points for Raf.
He was a tremendous guard and a fabulous high school player at Orange HS.

Made it to the final …. Had beaten St John’s at Walsh in the one meeting during the season but lost by 10 in ECAC Metro final at MSG.

Speaking of Tynes and Fairfield, the next year was his senior year and they probably had what would be one of the program’s biggest wins of the 1970s, a blowout of Fairfield at Fairfield that ended the longest home win streak in the country. That SHU team lost to Army and coach what’s-his-name in the first round of the ECAC Metro playoffs at Nassau Colosseum.

One if my favorite Walsh games was beating SJU, I think in the 74 season. Louie had just returned from his stint coaching the Nets. I was right by their bench and is was cool seeing Louie being Louis up close.

When Paul Lape left the team, Greg saved us. It was clear he was good, but he stepped into lead guard spot and kept things going.
If memory serves he had already replaced Lape in the starting lineup. Which eventually caused Lape to leave the team.

One of my favorite SH players of all time. Great team player as well as a very classy person & quiet, cool dude. Smooth as silk, on the court & off.

The NCAA universally adopted the 3-point line in college basketball for the 1986-87 season, initially set at 19 feet, 9 inches, though some conferences experimented with it earlier, with the Big Sky Conference and Southern Conference using it in the early 1980s. The line distance has been adjusted since, but 1986-87 marked its official, widespread introduction across all levels of NCAA play.

KInd of sad..... with NIL, we'll never see these totals again.
Also,, Werkman.... amazing 3 years total with no 3pt shot.... frosh not allowed on Varsity.. back in the day Got screwed for '64 Olympics if memory serves. Watched him play when i was in HS.... he used to run by the scorers table and give the "count it" hand sign...

oops... just saw that posters already commented on Nick the Quick.......

Just had this conversation with a friend the other day. It'll be a very specific type of college player. You look at a guy like Braden Smith. He's built for the college game and was taken care of. He's "on-pace" for breaking Bobby Hurley's assist record (already has school and B10 records). To be sure, it'll be less likely, but still in play for particular players.

Is it safe to say we most likely won’t see it in this current landscape from a player in a Seton Hall jersey for 4 years?

IMO Terry Dehere’s record is very safe.

Tynes and Galis were ridiculous.

Then Galis and Callandrillo.

Those backcourts would have been dominant in any era, perhaps more now with 3 point line. Great shooters, passers and ability to steal the ball.

Tynes had a number of good players as a high school coach, but none ever landed at Seton Hall. Always found that odd.

He had a great top of the key bank shot. So soft, the ball would roll around in the bottom of the twine.

In Dawes' senior season the team was at Bunny's. I introduced them to Tynes. But all they saw was an older man and they were just polite. Until I told them he scored over 2000 points with no 3 point arc. When they heard that their ears perked and they invited him to sit with them and he told them about the 'old' days at SHU.
