Interesting or too good to be true?

So, ACC teams are going to negotiate down from a $120 mil buyout plus media rights revenue starting at $70 mil. a year which escalates for 9 yrs, in the B1G and settle for $300 mil. in total? That's like $650 mil. the ACC is going to leave on the table. No wonder that conference is doomed, it's run by complete idiots. I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell the ACC who do I call?
We’ll see what happens

Which won’t be happening, especially with w this much smoke, is the ACC staying together for anywhere near the remaining 13 years of the GOR and teams in there that are valuable dying on the vine

Of course, we all know the saying that when there's smoke, there's fire. But we all also know that it's not always true -- that there's such a thing as a smokescreen. We'll have to see if there's fire or not.

Although I find the topic compelling. I agree with you. Just glad we are in a great place.
We could be on the outside looking in.

The whole conference realignment is driven by television dollars.
They took what should a competitive past time, annd made it into a cutthroat business .
I have heard on Sirius xm that the next step (after all the realignment is over) is to pay schools on a sliding scale according to value to the networks. The successful schools get more money than the rest.

No they don't. Zero chance you can provide one single thing to prove that.
Of course I don’t

The B1G isn’t in the business of spouting their business to the public for message board users and the like to run with

Conversely, you have nothing to prove they don’t have a standing offer - zero chance you can provide one single thing to prove that as well

From the info I’ve gotten, it’s likely the B1G, and it’ll happen in the next 2/3 years

lol ok sport. I"m the only to call ALL the BIG moves prior and gave 2 schools no one thought of prior to happening but I guess you can't research back to the last two go rounds

have fun, I'll enjoy the best conference in the world with some southern additions

I can assure you from a Clemson board member that Clemson and FSU have been jointly and seperately looking to get out. I know definitively Clemson has met with the B1G.

Clemson and FSU (as well as Oregon) have huge fan bases nationally which is important in a digital distribution model.

No clue how they get out of the ACC but both are good fits from a national fan base that now can be monetized digitally as well as academically.

With the additions of commiefornia schools and anything southern, that elitist big ten badge of honor that it plays cold weather while others avoid it is going to have to go the way of the dodo. 🤣

This is such an interesting dynamic on who the BIG is targeting.

UNC ..totally fits , and it’s just a question if UNC is ready to move to future and give up its past ….lot of history they have with the other ACC schools and geography

FSU is the curious one , because this is a massive invasion of SEC territory . If Disney ans espn we’re not In a financial downturn era , I wound think the SEC woukd defend turf a lot harder…now it could happen .

People need to realize that most of the ACC is. Not like the big ten …not duke , wake , Miami , BC, cuse , Pitt or the ville …and UNC and Florida state are much different schools than the rest of the ACC and more like big ten schools

As for the other five …onky Virginia is a school more like UNC and FSU. Clemson ,
Nc state , ga tech and va tech are nunber 2 schools in their state ….not big ten home run targets

This is going to be interesting for sure …I give Jim Delaney a much better chance of pulling this off …but that time has past

Short answer is it's complicated - they'll likely be lawsuits, money exchanged, deals made, etc.

There's another site with a reputable poster who has explained it in detail (out of respect for Richie et. Co., I won't mention the site)

All I'll say is the people I've spoken with, coupled with Nee and a few other notable writers on different sites, podcasts I listen to, etc. are all singing the same tune

And if they're singing it, being more clued in then I am (working close to the university, being big money donors, etc.), then it's music to my ears
Well I asked you what the path is for FSU to challenge the GOR . You didn’t have an answer but now I’ve come across a rumor of one. Who knows how true or realistic it is. Supposedly it will be claim by FSU that they were defrauded and that Swofford and tv consultants were grossly inaccurate and misleading in their projections and that they gave bad faith representations.

I'm hearing they could also buy back the rights as well, spread out over 10 years/30 mil, possibly with more on the back end (same w/exit fee), tie up in courts initially, in hopes conference dissolves so they don't have to pay out 300 mil in totality

What I've definitely heard is their lawyers "have a firm grip on the GOR," whatever that means

when people say FSU is SEC or has SEC written all over it, you can tell they really don't know what they are talking about. FSU leadership has always, always viewed FSU as a national brand with southern tradition. UF is SEC like, FSU is way more like the BIG

UNC is as well, good call. UNC bball has lots of tradition with regional rivalries however, money talks and UNC is far more like a BIG campus than any SEC school

UF has blocked FSU from getting into the SEC, why help now. Kinda like making the argument that Rutgers is now gonna help Cuse or BC to the B1G.

As far as the ACC goes, there are two football centric schools and the rest are basketball centric. Clemson and FSU hate that everything is for the good of basketball in the ACC.

My understanding is gates blocked them first 2 times, but sponsored them in 1990 and would do it again this time around

Absent of AAU (which fsu is actively working on), why in the world would you assume Miami over FSU?

I mean I don't know why you would think its so outlandish unless your an FSU fan lol, I'm looking at this objectively and common sense wise. Miami has a lot going for them for the BIG. A few reasons why Miami is more attractive to the BIG

- Big ten alumni- almost every expansion for the BIG had a lot of weight put on where big ten alumni are and want to be - look at Rutgers, how many midwestern transplants or kids from NJ are tied to big ten schools? huge numbers, it makes sense. Think about all the east coasters who move or have places in south florida, miami area. Miami and other east coast cities have a very common mind set, I am not sure how those goofy panhandlers fit in with the rest of the conference, I just dont see it.

- the big doesnt just add for football, if at all, they add for money and research. money in location, miami is way above fsu in both and have the aau, much larger endownment. I don't see how this isn't looked at all when literally big ten expansion is heavily weighted on these factors.

- if you then compare FSU in the above factors to say GT, UVA, UNC - its not even close.

I don't see any real motivation for the ACC membership to negotiate with anyone trying to leave with a decade plus left. ESPN too for that matter.

The being defrauded by Swofford and the tv consultant sounds more plausible to me. Whether that's a real avenue FSU would take, who knows. But I'd expect it to be something contentious like that, not something negotiated on "friendly" terms.

Miami advantages - AAU, large NE enrollment, medical school, historic FB and Baseball

FSU advantages - Large state university, historic FB and baseball (overall very strong athletic dept), massive alumni base

Lot of east coasters in S. FL, none go to games. UM draws flies absent of FSU game every 2 years, or the occasional UF / OOC opponent. It's beyond embarrassing to see Doak South empty, and must kill them to send that rent check in every year

FSU has only been co-ed since 1947. Of course they won't measure up to the aforementioned schools. They don't generations of doctors, lawyers, etc.

If the argument is whether to ultimately add UM or not, you have a valid point. I'd prefer to see them rot in the B12, but that's just me

If the point is to add them now, before FSU, you'd be way off base IMO

That's fine, and maybe things have changed with how the BIG views it since my previous discussions with the Rutgers AD department on the topic 5 years ago, but I believe FSU is just using the BIG to get leverage with the SEC. I think FSU will be fine in the end, question will be how far are the going to fall behind before they are, we shall see if they have the balls to challenge the GOR.

Except bring in Bevo & Boomer, while the ACC let ND bend them over and continued to be Bball centric
That's the point. The SEC had basically the same deal as the ACC. They had to add Texas and Oklahoma to get out of it. That's not forward thinking.

The only real forward thinking was the way the Big Ten set up their contract. The signed a long term contract with their lower tiers rights to get the BTN, but the signed short term contracts with their top tier rights for regular broadcasts. That let the keep renegotiating a deal every few years to keep up with the market value.

I’ve lived in NE Florida for 30 years and have yet to meet an alumni. I also challenge you to look at Florida and where the growth is and where those B1G alumni are moving. It’s not Miami and hasn’t been for decades.

Miami is a good private school. Not a B1G fit at all.

They’ll def challenge GOR bc they don’t have a choice

It’s either challenge and leave, or die on the vine and never compete again

It’s truly split re B1G and SEC

Admin overwhelmingly wants B1G
Most Fans & boosters prefer SEC

Last time admin won out when going to Acc instead of sec in the 90s

Admin won in 90s and goal of school is to be AAU & elite academicly, get more research, etc
B1G provides best options for that

Also FSU is more national then southern

I agree with the linked article’s author on one point. Conference realignment attracts low quality sources leading to fake news.

However, I disagree with the author FSU can maneuver itself out of the conference-friendly deal by successfully arguing the ACC defrauded FSU. FSU like other big universities are sophisticated parties who are free to sign or not sign big $$ contracts.

Separately, I find it strange the ACC grant of rights contract gets more attention on TKR than the B1G GOR deal, the details of which nobody seems to know about, including the Rutgers athletics director Pat Hobbs.

Here is Pat a few hours after Rutgers announced the new B1G deal. "If you’re wondering how much money Rutgers will receive from the Big Ten Conference following its historic media rights deal, know this: Not even Pat Hobbs is sure. 'I haven’t seen what the final numbers will look like from the conference.'"

Well no one, especially us, wants to leave the B10 so there's no interest, or much less interest, in its GOR. Potential targets, future competitors and teams that can increase our revenue are of interest so you'll get more talk about those issues.

Way back I remember reading about the BTN having some 20-25 year kind of GOR. I don't know that I've ever read anything about the B10 tier 1 rights though.

UNC is as well, good call. UNC bball has lots of tradition with regional rivalries however, money talks and UNC is far more like a BIG campus than any SEC school

Adding these two would massively undermine the ACC on a permanent basis …besides reducing the ACC to 12 plus Notre Dame, it really leaves UVa as the flagship state univeristy in the confrence….That might hurt NC state and Virginia tech’s feelings , but that the reality .

This brings the ACC down to the big 12
Level on a permanent basis …and it cements the big ten with the SEC as THE two power confrences

The only question is …yea money talks , but how much is the big ten losing its identity by chasing the money and nationl reach . Adding eastern , western and now southern schools make this a national LEAGUE and no longer a regional confrnce

The reality is …the rivalries will be there sooner than later in all sports except football …because football just doesn’t play each other enough to quickly build those historic rivalries . In time they come….

Trade off for sure , and forward thinking has to be there …old thinking makes it a dinosaur .

Only concern is it the right thinking ?

I go back and forth on it …..

Which ACC or Pac12 schools increase the revenue pot? Wasn't the figure ~70M per year to bring in or more to add value.

While some schools like Clemson & FSU may fit better in B1G do they have a big enough base to increase the pot? Will Clemson be the same if Dabo heads to NFL? Is Tallahassee big enough market today? Are FSUs best days in the past?

I would have thought some west coast schools could add more tv timeslots in big market and would block other conferences from selling those games as competition to B1G TV/STREAM contract.

When will all this conference imperialism end?

I get a kick out of the “belongs” arguments.

Here are a few current associations that don’t belong:

In the SEC: OU/TX and Mizzou do not fit this conference. A&M kinda does because it’s an Ag school…but it certainly isn’t “southern” or Dixieland

In the B12: the kludged conference. There is nothing remotely linkable between a hillbilly and a Mormon, or a southern baptist and the people’s republic of boulder. Then you have the middle schools…big 8 and SWC remnants…thankful not to have been left behind 🫣

In the B1G: RU actually belongs…amazingly enough…not by athletic pedigree (clearly) but it fits. Yet now we are in the same conference with southern Cali schools and potentially PAC NW and ACC schools? 20 schools? 24? That’s not a conference…that’s a league!

The ACC: the last conference that still makes sense…apparently not for long. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Since it is all about money now, at least RU ended up on the right side…amazing. 🤷🏻‍♂️
