kids drink...wow, who would have thought that. Kids get drunk and pass out or throw up...wow, who would have thought that

you guys are ridiculous in the holier than though pointing of the fingers

Hell we had tailgates with 20 kegs and 700 cases of beers and no issues.

@mildone agree that example is purely fked up and wrong
I’ve been to some sick tailgates but 20 kegs and 700 cases of beer?

You’re telling me you had roughly 20k beers at a single tailgate.

the pissing between the cars was bad. The vomiting on the cars & the students passed out between the cars was worse.

Plus the space reserved by 2 parking passes with over a hundred students squeezed into that area, overflowing into other tailgates.

Students getting drunk is no big deal (to me). Been happening forever.

But there've always been that relative few who's drunken stupidity always seems to turn mean. The guys force-feeding alcohol to a nearly passed out girl... that ****'s just mean and could've quickly turned criminal.

So you had a fully stocked beer delivery truck parked next to your tailgate?
not sure where the disconnect is
wehad a 4 way mixer with 30 kegs
we had another 4 way mixer with over 700 cases of beer stacked

speaking of beer trucks, there were 2 in back to back years at different tailgates

we had an islander party for 48hrs that had a beer truck the entire time but that's another story

The disconnect is you stated above that you had “A” tailgate, singular event with 30 kegs and 700 cases. Now you are somewhat backpedaling and saying 2 separate tailgates.

But to each their own.

Get the kids back on busch to tailgate, that would be a huge start. Make the game an event again, a must see type of situation like basketball is becoming. Winning obviously cures all, and also because the kids have a short attention span these days, Incentivize them to come in early and stay for the whole game.

Now, in regard to the non-students, look at the crowds from 2006 three 2009. Full houses for the majority of the games and a kick off. Same thing as students, start to make it an event, a must see situation, and start winning

Have some kind of bells running or a siren the sound off an hour before the game, then 45 minutes, then 30 minutes. Maybe the PA announcer can come on and encourage the fans to get in early to support the team as well.
This is a great idea. 45 minutes before KO They should have like an old WWII air raid siren sound for 1 minute and everyone starts wrapping up their tailgates. This is a great idea. Somebody should present this to Rutgers athletics!

I don’t go to all the games so I wasn’t aware if they do this - the last few I was at, if they do it I hear them (VT & Wagner)

Clearly, judging by the lack of people in their seats at kickoff, something else needs to be done

Actually it was more their behavior in the Blue Lot during our inaugural Big 10 season in 2014. @MrsScrew can attest to the problems they caused which resulted in the administration clamping down on them.
I tailgated in the blue lot for all 4 years of my college experience 2007-2011 season. College kids acted the same every single season. The blue lot was where the students tailgated. If you didnt like it then you should have tailgated in another lot.

I was in the blue lot at that time. I would have been totally fine if they let me choose a spot away from the student tailgates. The problem was if you got there early, the parking people would force you to park right next to a loaded up pickup that you knew would be a huge student tailgate in the next hour or two spilling into ours.

Use the 50/50 raffle and you’ll get people inside.

End sales at game time and split the winnings.
1/2 announced in 1st quarter.
1/2 announced early 4th

Must be PRESENT to win.
No more claiming online.
That’s would keep people at the game.

What ended student tailgating on Busch was the Middlesex Country Sherrifs rising up and down the blue lots on their ATVs giving students tickets.

Last year students/fraternities tailgated was 2011 season during my senior year.

It's a real shame. Some of the best times I had at college werw at these tailgates.

Pretty absurd watching atv cops give tickets to 20 year old students drinking beer with their parents.

You guys should have seen Union Street during Rush week in the early 80s.
One difference between then and the 90s/ early 2000s student tailgates was that people generally didn’t pass out where they were standing back then. We had the decency to find a couch.

I think what some of the posters are missing is that demand for parking/tickets etc. increased during that year because it was our first year in the B1G. You had more donors, long-time season ticketholders mixed in with the student tailgates because they may have been moved from lots where there weren't students.

The donors/season ticketholders probably don't see it as unreasonable to expect that people wouldn't puke on their car or p$ss on them. This was discussed at length at the time with the Hamsterdam student section proposed. Someone even drew a map with the proposed carve out for students. Can't really compare that year to 1995-99 or even some of the 2005-09 years.

My group was only in there for that year because of a donation snafu that got us bounced from Yellow.

That's a pretty arrogant attitude.

Do you think most people had a choice? With the renewed interest the entry into the Big 10 got us, a whole bunch of people got booted down the pecking order in what lots they could get into. Plus don't forget they carved off a huge chunk of the Yellow Lot for the new building.

It strains credulity to believe 18-22 year olds are passed out drunk at 11AM on a Saturday morning.

If anything they're sleeping off the night before.

This argument would make more sense for 3:30 or night games.

Students arrive late for noon games like everyone else- it's hard to get up in the morning and out of the house on a Saturday morning.

So what?

So people complained and now students don't tailgate. You got what you wanted. Don't complain about students not going to the game and/or not becoming fans then. Tailgating as a student was a pretty big part of the undergraduate experience at the time. And now it's not.

Not nearly as much as they used to.
you are not wrong on this at all, Rutgers needs to foster student tailgating, not inhibit it

people complain, people get upset when it's called out. Hell just look at that guy on the roundtable practically having an aneurysm because of an example about complaining with Greg. people have become way way too ridiculous

but you are 100% correct

With the current don't ask, don't tell laws in NJ regarding alcohol and marijuana, there should be a workable compromise. I would suggest carving out an area for students. That could be the old Ally area, or a circus tent in blue lot. It would be fenced in and a student ID is needed to enter. RUPD can have a visible presence to prevent any stupid behavior. Allow student groups to rent space within the area, for a fee. The greek orgs would band together and have a common DJ/stage. Have a BYOB policy. I know local businesses would be happy to sponsor this area. RU is not selling alcohol. RU is not condoning underage drinking. RU is actually creating an area where students can congregate and enjoy a college GameDay tailgate as student body. The stadium is literally on the way home. Students will go to the game if they're already on Busch. Then it's up to RUFB to play competitive games and keep them in the stands

Is there liability, of course. Can it be done in a way to mitigate that liability, yes. Can there be a giant student tailgate where everyone has responsible fun, yes. Will it increase student attendance, yes. Will it create lifelong fans and make memories for the student body, yes

The admin just has to be willing to give it a shot. Liability will never be zero, in anything. There are dozens of sexual assaults in residence halls every year, but we don't close down the dorms. Same idea, remove and ticket the stupid, but allow the other 98% to enjoy what would be come a fantastic tradition. As an RU alum and RU parent, I would much prefer my kids in The Alley, then behind an off campus house or frat with little to no supervision....and I'm a frat advisor :) Athletics and Hobbs had the right idea, just need the folks across the river to buy in.

Or the Friday Social Drink.

RU paid for the pizza and the beer.
