My point is a 7-5 football team that beats ole Miss most of the time, is way better than being one of the better sec baseball teams. Better investment, better everything.
Perhaps the answer to your question lies here. Exactly how often, and for how long, have we ever even been that level you act like is an option on the table(7-5 team that beats Ole Miss most of the time)? Even before the portal / NIL?
Looking at our 3 most successful tenured coaches:
JWS went 6-6(ish) on average over 13 years. Went 7-6 in Egg Bowls (.538 winning percentage).
Mullen went 7-5 on average over 9 years, and went 5-4 in Egg Bowls.
Leach was the only other competent coach we’ve had in the modern era. If you give him 2 patsy nonconference wins in 2020 to account for schedule imbalance that year, he averages around 7-5 for 3 years, 1-2 in Egg Bowls.
Put ‘em all together, its a quarter century of data of our best coaches. Its all largely before we were set at a massive disadvantage with portal / NIL. And its still less than a 7-5 average, and its 13-12 against Ole Miss….just barely over .500.
Long story short, this “7-5 and beat Ole Miss most of the time” status isn’t even achievable or sustainable for us. Its not an option, regardless of your preference. Not over any extended period of time, anyway, and especially not now that the entire landscape has shifted.
