I never sensed the SHU fans were overly critical of Dan.He was not as renowned as Bobby in HS and the expectations were not as high for him.

I think he had very high expectations for himself ,had difficulty achieving those and put that pressure on himself.I'm sure PJ was tough on him which didn't help matters.

he got booed at caa. it was a big deal.

i had tickets via a friend from jc who had the connection to the guy who controlled about 10 tickets. 3 friends of mine and 7 strangers, older guys fron jc. one was a big time jc hs coach.

first time dan enters a game, the 7 other guys (and they were big dudes - could have been extras on "on the waterfront") stand up and boo. LOUDLY. still remember, one guy yelled "he's a ham n egger" and they never stopped all season.

the coach HATED Bob Sr. Had nothing to do with Dan.

Bob Sr,, like many of the all time great coaches, is a polarizing figure. He spoke to and coached his kids in a way most don’t and can’t anymore, with a few notable exceptions. No doubt made some enemies in coaching circles. But if you’ve read anything about the man, and I’ve read about all there is because I was fascinated with him and St Anthony’s, there was a reason he treated his kids how he did. And there is a special place in heaven for that man.

fwiw my post should not be taken as slanted against bob sr. but while dan did get booed, some loudmouths were booing his dad. i think out of jeolosy.

i grew up in nj. lived and followed hs ball. spent lots of summer days and nights with kids from jc. and before bob coached st a's, i had never heard of that hs. only st als.

my son ran track for nyu. they practiced in the jc armory sometimes in the winter. one day as he left the track, he saw coach hurley, ran over to him and said i have your sons jersey on, and got a kick out of opening his warmup to show him his shu uni shirt with dans # !!!

Were they in section 125? I remember idiots booing Hurley in that section his entire first year every time he came in the game. They were brutal. I never understood it.

I remember it differently. There were some who thought Danny was even better than Bobby. There were reports that Danny would light it up in practice. But, during the games, he couldn’t perform. This probably led to PJ playing Danny over Caver which I could never understand. Caver is the only player I don’t think PJ coached up to his highest potential.

I remember some boos but I don’t ever remember it being significant number of fans.

It was also over 30 years ago. The only thing I remember about Danny was his surly body language that was not endearing at all. I rooted for him but it wasn't always easy. I'm with Cern on this. There were some boos from time to time but just from a few, isolated nitwits.

Agree that PJ screwed up both Danny and Caver.Danny was a combo guard and Caver a PG.There were plenty of minutes for the two of them.

There was an artricle in the Ledger back in the day that stated that Danny had some sort of emotional breakdown at SHU. He reportedly did not leave his doom room. It was PJ who coaxed him out of his room and compassionately tried to get Danny the emotional help he needed. My impression was that Danny was caught between the strong personalities of Bobby Sr. and PJ. He also had the added pressure of measuring up to Bobby Jr.'s accomplishments at Duke.

Imagine being the star of the best HS program in NJ, Gatrae POY, 1st team all state, getging a scholarship to a high level BE program, and compared to your bro, you look like an also ran.

Someone mentioned his surly body language. I saw what he was talking about. And living in a shore town, many JC families had summer homes where I lived, and I played lots of ball with lots of JC kids while in HS. and when I saw Dan, it reminded me of those guys.
