What is going on with the students? Did anyone ever get to the bottom of it?

We have a team that was nationally ranked and on path to return to the NCAA Tournament. There's excitement, juice. Why not enjoy it?

Hate to blame the Athletic department for too much, but they need to be on top of this to do whatever they can to get the students to that arena. Seems like there are not many Student Season tix sold. Make it as easy as possible. Give some coupons for the concession stands. Do whatever.

We’ve had issues at home even during some of the good years with Willard. Maybe something to it idk.

I remember seeing Delgado, Desi, KC, etc. handing out pizzas in the dorm rooms encouraging students to come to the game. They might need to do something like that. It really is embarrasing.

So, then why didn't the team play well in first halves when the place was packed and had a juiced-up crowd?

They barely support the team at Walsh on campus. Do you think they're going to make any effort on a noon game with snow coming down, even though it was only going to be about 2 inches.

The school is doing everything possible. Eventually you look to the kids and not the administration for the poor results.

Do they even know who is on the team since the past 2 years there has been a major turnover. Are the players on the team fellow student athletes like in years past? Because of NIL the answer is a resounding NO. Just saying.

Poll the student body and ask questions and the reasons will come out. This is a business and we have a business school so why are we not using it to help with this issue?

Watch other power 5 teams throughout the country. Many with the same issues as us and many not with an AP top 25 team. Yet the stands are full.

The apathy with our students is pathetic. When you can't fill the lower section at Walsh, which includes your own band taking many seats, it's on the student period!

Earlier in the year I saw some pictures of Parker and Rivera in the library working the students to come to a game and maybe giving out bling of some sort.

Student section was packed for UConn. A noon game on a Saturday after likely a party night is not a recipe for turnout.
Agree maybe some incentives would help. Can the students assist with 3s and free throws? 😂

Halldan, I understand your frustration with the students. A cause for concern. It doesn't help the team. However, I still believe its two separate issues regarding the on-court play.

As an aside, I was going into the arena at the UConn game on the Lafayette Str. entrance. The students had just arrived before me. The lines looked to be 50 deep going into the arena. It was just freezing outside. I walked down to the other entrance. I know they are 18-22 years old but standing for that long process to get in is not the best scenario. I know Prudential are going to do upgrades. Why can't they see that some type of canopy or shelter is needed moving forward and could be beneficial?? All of these future stadiums and arenas being built or renovated take everything into consideration. Both Metlife and Prudential to a lesser degree must change their thinking. Lol getting pelted with snow waiting for friends at the Butler game wasn't too much fun either.

Yes but for the most part they have much bigger student bodies and much better resources and much better arenas to play in! Take RU for example. They have sucked for many years, but they have many more students and Jersey Mikes arena that is great to play in as opposed to the Pru Center.

What happened to the fans when we played at the meadowlands. Those were miserable trips and much more difficult to get to

Then how do you explain the students not selling out the lower tier, about 500 seats or so at Walsh in any of the three OOC games this year?

Enough with the excuses. Their support of their own basketball team has been pathetic.

I am agreeing with you but also say that other schools have the same issue but it is not as apparent because of the better facilities (easier access) and larger population of students to draw from. For example they may have been turning away students due to a lack of student tickets available for the number that want them and now they don't. Under both scenarios the student section will be filled but the demand is way down.

It’s apathy. The question is why. Then how it can be changed.
I agree; we are all taking guesses here, probably based on our own experiences, biases (likes/don't likes), but what we really need to do is to ASK THE STUDENTS!

Do you attend the basketball games? If yes, why? If no, why not?

What are the 3 top reasons for attending?

What are the 3 top impediments to attending?

What incentives would allow you to overcome those impediments and go to the games?

And so on. Instead of guessing as to what is in their heads, ask them, and then, to the extent their concerns can be addressed, make changes! And put the whole process on social media blast; show them you are interested in finding out what would motivate them to come to the games, and show them you are willing to, and ARE making changes that address their specific concerns.

So, all good questions about the students. This thread has gone into the student attendance issue. However, we are going into the excuse category in relation to the on court performance of the team. Sure, students not being there hurt the arena atmosphere. The team has made 4 of last 34 three point attempts??? Which is the more concerning issue?

I went to the Villanova SJU game after the Butler game, and it was night and day difference with students. The student section was overflowing and the kids were all juiced up for the game...same weather, so that is not an excuse; same amount of undergrads, so that is not an excuse. Arena not on campus, so that is not an excuse. It's not like they had 100 more students there, it was 10x, maybe 20x. That SHU student turnout was embarrassing to say the least. There were more cheerleaders and band members than students.

Categorically false about the same amount of undergrads.

Categorically false about the same amount of undergrads.

Roughly 90% of Nova undergrads live on campus (so about 6.3k of their 7k undergrads). Meanwhile only about 2400 SHU undergrads live on campus.

Also take a read through this Setonian article from this past November about life on campus. But most here will probably scoff at the article as they do whenever recent grads or current students explain the campus life problem that the school has.

$3,000 for a round trip flight to California? This student is clearly not planning well, probably booking flights at the last minute. You can get a round trip to LAX next month for $300-400 currently.

Give them a day off from class and they will attend!

In the latest Jersey Jump Shot, Jerry spoke very frankly about the issue. Said it's clear that something is rotten in the student culture at Seton Hall, and that the athletic department needs to lean on gimmicks (themes, giveaways, whatever) to juice the student numbers game-by-game however they can.
