Willard wasn't different than most coaches. But maybe he was near the top of the list.
As I noted on the Trove many years go Willard got caught in a lie trying to get an advantage over our next opponent, Michigan State.
That day we played at Walsh and Powell sprained his ankle early and did not play the rest of the game. In those days the players came to the post game prior to the coach and of course the first question to each of the 5 was the status of Powell. To a man they told us Powell was fine and could have come back in the game if needed.
Then minutes later after the players left Willard came into the room having no idea what the players said and of course the first question asked of him was about Powell's status. With a straight face he said Powell was hurt badly and probably would have to miss a few games. The media all quietly laughed and no more was said that day about Powell.
Five days later the Pirates blew a late lead against the Spartans losing by 3 points. A game where the 'injured' Powell dropped in 37 points playing 33 minutes.
