i am not happy with our staff right now. we play a team who is one of the worst at stopping runs between the tackles (which is the only place we run the ball) and we have a redshirt freshman throw the ball 50+ times. just stupid play calling. i also dont get how wr keep getting behind our dbs by such wide open lengths. our secondary has really regressed these last two years. we need to recruit better dl kids also. think we need one more GOOD de, dt and a play making wr to finish this years class off.

Coach Cut has spoiled many of us these last few years. I like to think of all the great things he's done for Duke football. Now we are second guessing his decision making skills just like many do when the G.O.A.T. goes to stall ball. I'll take them both over any other coaches in the college game today. Just my 2 cents.
Cut said in August this was his "most talented Duke team ever." This from the N&O late August....Mind you the injury bug has been unmerciful since then, but still his "most talented team" should not be 0-3 vs WAKE, NW and UVA....Cut said everything would "depend on maturation of players" per success this year....Not 2nd guessing Cut, but coaches do have something to do w/player's "maturation."
However Surf my friend I digress- and need to speak to your point....Roper/Cut only seem to want to focus on runs up the middle, even w/Duncan out...Dont understand lack of toss sweeps to Wilson, Wilson playing some wildcat, and the dink-doink passes are getting old to the boundary for 3-5 yds...(Even Bronko Mendenhalll said after the game Duke likes to move ball w/"methodical, short throws.") Definitely look to Rahming, Chambers vertical more as UVA really exposed us....(much like NW, Wake).. Why not run a little option too??? Nothing to lose now except perhaps 7 more games....

Lot's of things have changed since Coach Cut said that. We may just have to suck it up and take what the fountain will give us the rest of the season. I believe Coach Cut. It may take a little time for this team to be complete. Don't give up on Duke football guys. Remember pre Coach Cut. OFC

The problem with Cut is that no matter how bad the offense and defense perform, he will not replace Knowles and Roper. We have not improved on either side of the ball, and what we do do is totally predictable. Sad.
Agreed- Zach Roper got the job because of his dad Kurt and NOTHING ELSE...Hes NEVER been an OC and was promoted from Duke special teams coach....Knowles has a long leash as evidenced by the crash and burn of the defense 2nd half of season last year....

The problem is not recruiting. Just as an example we had a better class last year then Louisville and Boise State. You do not need 20 4 stars or even 7 for that matter. The problems start with Roper and Knowles. Heck, even special teams are suffering big time for some reason.
Roper called for over 150 passes in the 3 losses combined to WAKE/NW/UVA....He called for less than 100 runs...People say well he couldnt establish the run....Not so fast....majority of his runs are UP THE MIDDLE,and he seldom explores the outside

I love Cutt, but if Saban came knocking, come on now. Cutt and K don't deserve the same comparison. Saban and K do.
We'll get there and I don't want to make excuses but our toughest enemy has been injuries. Even before the season started we were getting dinged left and right. The ship can be righted, maybe not this year but next.

Cannot put Cut in K's class for sure, but he's built a program for us...Worst fears are bottoming out with 0 or 1 more win, and verbal commits taking a hike...Hope we can get it together starting Saturday...

Hasnt played a down Mark-probably would have been one of our best wideouts this year...Hamstring kept him off field until practice last couple weeks, but hear now he may get redshirted....

so we picked up a commitment tonight from dt axel nyembwe out of maryland. 6'2'' 290 lbs. like his size and he fills a position of need. had other offers from wake and uva plus rutgers. i think he will be a player down the road.for us and with the way both wake and uva beat us up at the line of scrimmage they must see upside also. welcome axel.
guess the follow up question is what else and how many more do we recruit? think one de and a wr.
really have not heard or read anything about oline. we have two solid tackles and two good interior kids already so i think it would have to be a cant miss kinda kid for them to take one more. pretty sure defensive front seven and wr are our open slots. i think the dl/lb spots are still up in the air. is jordan a de or an olb? (most sites list him as olb) i think rumph ia a lb. is frye a dt or a de? (he is 6'3'' 255 but has said he could add weight quickly if the coaches want him to) both jordan (6'2'') and frye (6'3'') are on the short side for de. if they bulk up frye and and move jordan to a pass rushing olb type, then we still need one or two de. i dont know this but i think this may be what matthew butler is waiting on. just all i gather from what i read he wants to be a de not a dt. to me the best case scenario is jordan and rumph as lbs, frye to dt and we bring in butler plus one as de.

During the summer I met a couple of high school football players from Ga. that were passing through my home town. It was at a restaurant. They were both O-lineman and were returning from a camp being held at Duke and both were being recruited by Duke. I ask if they were considering Duke and both said a firm yes. I didn't get their names . Just didn't think to ask. OFC
Surf great report and thx...DL Coach Ben Albert doing a nice jon this year w/DL....O-Line has been my concern- Jones protection could be better, although his consistency in performance could too...
Back to O-Line, other than ND game of late we really havent run it at all well either...

our oline is struggling but i think a lot of the blame goes to the coaching staff. if you only run up the middle you are easy to defend. 3 and one run behind a guard. 4th and one run run behind the other guard. our play calling is so bad that one of the uva players after the game said the coaches told them they were going to stack the box because we wont run it outside. the two or three times we pitched to wilson and ran outside the tackles we picked up good yards. it has been a year and half now of us refusing to stretch the line of scrimmage. plus please only run the bubble screen once or twice a half. 12 times is just stupid.
Thank you Surf! Spot on! We're WAY TOO PREDICTABLE on offense! The toss sweep is not in the playbook...Jury is definitely out on Roper....He's called 2 good games out of 5,and 13-14pts arent going to win many games...

so probably not good news for duke but matthew butler is headed back to tennessee for a second time. just hard to match their game day atmosphere. hope a mom or dad is somewhere saying look at the lifetime benefits of a duke education but this has an sec or bust type feel to it.

It's always a good day when Duke wins and unc loses. I have to admit I was disappointed unc scored. 
To be honest I did watch the game and unc really got screwed. I remember at least 7 or 8 questionable call that went against him. Also if it hadn't been raining so hard and then wind hadn't been blowing so hard the score would probably been reversed. This may have taken Trubisky out of the Heisman race. OFC

Guys you're not gonna believe this but over at the blitz which is the tar heels football board has a thread dedicated just to the poor officiating against them during the V.T. game today. That just goes beyond what my feeble old mind can understand. OFC
Yes , Duke has their own issues puttin' butts in the seats for football games but unx fans are a hoot....
Very glad to get the W!!! Atrocious conditions, but Jones hit a nice pass for TD and Parker Boehme hit a nifty pass at the goal line in his ONE PLAY yesterday...May need to play Parker more at qb next week at Louisville. Hes actually a better runner than Jones, and way our O-line has been blocking our qbs are on run a lot!
