Yankees beefed up their biggest area of need with tall task lying ahead
At long last, the Yankees found some relief for their beleaguered relief corps.
Sanchez was a top offensive catcher in MLB for at least a few seasons before he dramatically fell off, for whatever reason.Somehow the Yanks keep catchers who are not that good offensively and give away kids who are proven better! Somehow the talent evaluation is way off. I remember when Gary Sanchez was promoted as being a great hitter for a number of years until the powers that be realized they were being made fools of.
Occasional threads on other sports are fine especially during the dregs of the offseason. MLB trade deadline talk is appropriate this week. The key is for all threads to remain civil and respectful.I thought this was a SHU sports fan page only.
He only had one good offensive season with the Yanks. 2017 in 122 games he batted 278 with 90 RBIs. He went way downhill after that. He did bat 299 the year before but played in only 53 games. His strikeout totals were almost on a par with his hits and it got worse with each season.Sanchez was a top offensive catcher in MLB for at least a few seasons before he dramatically fell off, for whatever reason.
The Yanks do a great job at developing catchers, as evidenced by their ability to deal guys for other talent. Been that way for a while, and sneakily guys like JR Murphy and Cervelli had long careers as backups after they left the Yanks.
Narvarez is a kid the Yanks signed at 18. Slowly worked his way up the organizational ladder and I don't think was ever viewed as a big time prospect. Ends up dealt in what I think was an organizational roster management move that teams make all the time under the radar, but has had a nice season for the Red Sox.
His flame burned out quickly, but I think you are selling him short. He only had one good offensive season with the Yanks. 2017 in 122 games he batted 278 with 90 RBIs. He was a strikeout waiting to happen his whole career. Even when he hit homers or for average he stuck out a lot. Plus he was not only very slow on the bases but made a lot of base running goofs. Catchers who hit homers and strike out a lot are not in demand unless they are great defensively which excludes Gary. A lifetime 224 hitter who strikes out a lot, is slow, horrible runner and not good defensively. Don't care about the power. I don't think I am selling him short. He is hard pressed to get a job these days. The NYC media was selling him as a great hitter. Boy did they goof! His flame burned out quickly, but I think you are selling him short.
In 2016, his breakout, he only played 53 games as you point out, but hit 20 HRs and drove in 42 runs in those 53 games. That's pretty good for anyone, but especially a catcher. Second in ROY. Also with a good BA and OBP.
2017 he was terrific offensively for a catcher.
2018 he was terrible offensively, although I don't recall if that's because he was hurt for a good portion of the year.
2019 the batting average was still bad, but he hit over 30 home runs and drove in close to 80 in a bit over 100 games, which for a catcher is pretty damn good offensive production.
And then he fell off the cliff, although he is still hanging around 5 years later because of the power as a backup C/DH.
He looked like a great hitter for the position coming off 2016 and 2017, when he accumulated 7 WAR combined, finished second in ROY, made an All Star team, won a Silver Slugger, and had somewhere like a top 20 MVP finish. I don't think the hype was unnecessarily justified going into the 2018 season coming off those two years with his pedigree as a prospect. Obviously he fell off a cliff, and what happened to him post-2017 is still mystifying based on what we saw those years. Even then, he rebounded in 2019 with a 3+ WAR position which for a catcher is pretty good. If you look at his stats over 2016-2019, he definitely didn't profile as a backup catcher, which you are right is what he ultimately became. He was a strikeout waiting to happen his whole career. He fell in love with the home run and not making contact! The same virus infecting the current catcher Wells who will be gone if he does not change his ways.He looked like a great hitter for the position coming off 2016 and 2017, when he accumulated 7 WAR combined, finished second in ROY, made an All Star team, won a Silver Slugger, and had somewhere like a top 20 MVP finish. I will ask again, are you the orbiter or is On3? Or are you going to delete this post as well?Occasional threads on other sports are fine especially during the dregs of the offseason. MLB trade deadline talk is appropriate this week. The key is for all threads to remain civil and respectful.
It’s both. LOTS isn’t coming back so I suggest you accept that and stop hijacking a thread that nobody else has a problem with aside from you.I will ask again, are you the orbiter or is On3? Or are you going to delete this post as well?
Dan said on the Trove that it was, so maybe get your stories correct. Thin skin JD…a paying poster asks a legitimate question and you delete it.It’s both. LOTS isn’t coming back so I suggest you accept that and stop hijacking a thread that nobody else has a problem with aside from you.
I have had this discussion with JD. He does not want an LOTS forum or even OT topics on the Pirate Crew Board for non-SHU discussions. It can be done whether On3 says so or not. Other schools have separate non-related forums up and running."When available we'll have that up. And LOTS as well if JD can get On3 to agree."
