Because he's the first gay football player to come out. That's why it's big news and an issue. The next gay football player might get a few mentions on twitter.
Well, hurray for him. I don't respect him anymore or any less. Basically he has told the world, "I prefer sucking dick and having other men poke me in the a$$"... Well, give him a gold medal.... I frankly don't care and would have prefered not knowing... I'm not homosexual... Does it make his and everyone else's world better knowing? I guess I do feel better about myself now that the "word is out" I'm not gay.... I think I'll call the New York Times tomorrow morning... Geeze..... Why do some gay folks think we really care?

I wouldnt say he has basically told the world what you claim.
I wouldnt say its even close to that.
But hey, thats probably because I dont boil down one's gender identity and/or preference to only sex acts.
You also ask why gay folks think 'we' care- well its because the historical societal dominant ideology in sports(football especially) has been to reward the typical alphamale personality- one that is overtly aggressive and objectifying of females.
We have, historically speaking, punished those who do not conform to this ideology. Punished by calling them weak, not rewarding them with endorsements, or worse.
But hey, who cares, right?
I for one love seeing tolerance taking effect in sports. Sports is where so many of our youth take their marching orders from. Since athletes are the default idols of boys across the country, seeing elite players take a stand on issues like racial and sexual orientation is fantastic.
Understandable but 95% of the country disagrees.
Actually he did this at the perfect time...do you think the NFL wants to be known as gay and lesbian haters?
Actually I would like to give him a gold medal. And you saying "basically he told the world he prefers sucking (idiot comments here)" is so ignorant and completely negates you saying you don't respect him any more or less.
Until someone coming out isn't a big deal, it's a big deal. This young man cannot get married in his alma mater state. You sir can get married in any state you please. I know it's your opinion and your right to say to think and say as you please, but that just makes me sad for you. Sorry for the rant and to call you out but I also had to give my opinion.
I get it. You don't think it's a big story but it's a big story nationally.

However, Mr. Sam could have just kept right on quietly being gay just like I'm quietly being heterosexual, living life as he chooses, and play football. But no, he just "had" to let the world know via the national media.... He just couldn't live with himself without letting us all know.... Well, we'll see how that plays out. Funny thing is, there are many gays that don't see the need to publicize their lifestyle. And you know something, they don’t live in a closet; they just live life quietly and without an agenda.

just like I'm quietly being...
Lasher8 doesn't post on here as much, but he said he was gay.
SPSer? There has to be gay guy on the board, but apparently not one that wishes to divulge that info.
I wonder how he would be treated on here. Congratulated on his courage? I'd like to hear his take on Sam and other gay athletes.
