Because he's the first gay football player to come out. That's why it's big news and an issue. The next gay football player might get a few mentions on twitter.

Ignorant

Well, hurray for him. I don't respect him anymore or any less. Basically he has told the world, "I prefer sucking dick and having other men poke me in the a$$"... Well, give him a gold medal.... I frankly don't care and would have prefered not knowing... I'm not homosexual... Does it make his and everyone else's world better knowing? I guess I do feel better about myself now that the "word is out" I'm not gay.... I think I'll call the New York Times tomorrow morning... Geeze..... Why do some gay folks think we really care?

Actually I would like to give him a gold medal. And you saying "basically he told the world he prefers sucking (idiot comments here)" is so ignorant and completely negates you saying you don't respect him any more or less.
Until someone coming out isn't a big deal, it's a big deal. This young man cannot get married in his alma mater state. You sir can get married in any state you please. I know it's your opinion and your right to say to think and say as you please, but that just makes me sad for you. Sorry for the rant and to call you out but I also had to give my opinion.

I wouldnt say he has basically told the world what you claim.
I wouldnt say its even close to that.

But hey, thats probably because I dont boil down one's gender identity and/or preference to only sex acts.

You also ask why gay folks think 'we' care- well its because the historical societal dominant ideology in sports(football especially) has been to reward the typical alphamale personality- one that is overtly aggressive and objectifying of females.
We have, historically speaking, punished those who do not conform to this ideology. Punished by calling them weak, not rewarding them with endorsements, or worse.

But hey, who cares, right?

I for one love seeing tolerance taking effect in sports. Sports is where so many of our youth take their marching orders from. Since athletes are the default idols of boys across the country, seeing elite players take a stand on issues like racial and sexual orientation is fantastic.

Actually he did this at the perfect time...do you think the NFL wants to be known as gay and lesbian haters?

Unreal....

Understandable but 95% of the country disagrees.

I'd be willing to bet that at least 70% of all people in this country don't even know that there is a gay guy in the draft. Why don't we send this guy an officially-unofficial T-shirt since he's such a hero?

Thatll be pretty tough to show.
Before this news he was a projected as anywhere from mid rounds to late rounds.
Same with Collins and the NBA- prove he isnt playing right now because of his sexual orientation. An argument can easily be made for lack of talent/ability to separate from other available options.

Honestly not sure if that's a guy or a girl you posted. If I was a talented lesbian, I'd definitely have to go the tennis or soccer route.

I dont see it being political or crammed anywhere.

He is the first, so that is huge news, internally and externally to football players and atheletes in hyper masculine team sports in general. Missou proved that, as a team, that A, they are mature, trustworthy individuals, and B, that a gay player is not destroying a locker room. Now others can feel a little more comfortable being themselves without fear of reprocussions.

I look forward to the day that this is NOT news.

I get it. You don't think it's a big story but it's a big story nationally.

It's being pushed hard nationally because of what MIGHT happen in the NFL. But to think that even 95% of news outlets is running with this story is absurd. I wouldn't be surprised if 70% of America had no clue about this story. It's like "Oh, Russia bans gay people. There's a gay gold-medalist. There's a gay tennis player. There's a gay basketball player. There's a gay ESPN anchor. Now there's a gay college athlete?" For the average person, albeit not activists in the lbgynw movement, it's just another story.

At lunch, I glanced at ESPN when we got to the restaurant. The only news item they were covering was Sam. Stayed that way for a good long while. I left the restaurant without seeing any Olympic highlights (they did cover that OSU player vs TTU fan stuff at some point during my half hour visit).
Given how low the percentage of homosexuals is supposed to be (max of 3% including bi's in the last peer-reviewed study from the left), the coverage is really out of proportion to the impacted audience.

For sports fans - especially football fans - it's a huge story.

And I spoke in hyperbole using the 95% number. It's a big story.

Is there an openly gay...........

SPSer? There has to be gay guy on the board, but apparently not one that wishes to divulge that info.

I wonder how he would be treated on here. Congratulated on his courage? I'd like to hear his take on Sam and other gay athletes.

Noooooo, he's the 5***** gay of the day.... He's held in high regard because he's "different". He's bold and courageous... He's free now.....

I feel sorry for him and the lifestyle he's chosen. As old Phil Roberson said, it just ain't natural and it's not in accordance with God's plan for humanity. Perhaps I was "too much like Phil" with my characterization of the "sexual acts" between homosexual couples. I'm sure there are some who are only together because they like each other’s clothes..... or sweet smiles... or just need a special friend.... I also apologize to you “tolerant people.” I must learn to be more tolerant to Mr. Sam's choice of lifestyle... I should not be so quick to judge....

However, Mr. Sam could have just kept right on quietly being gay just like I'm quietly being heterosexual, living life as he chooses, and play football. But no, he just "had" to let the world know via the national media.... He just couldn't live with himself without letting us all know.... Well, we'll see how that plays out. Funny thing is, there are many gays that don't see the need to publicize their lifestyle. And you know something, they don’t live in a closet; they just live life quietly and without an agenda.

Oh, I did call the New York Times and tell them I wanted to "come out" today and announce I was heterosexual... They said in a kind way, "sorry Mr. TDawg52, you're just like millions of men.... no big story here..... won't sale papers.... or gain us additional advertisement dollars from the heterosexual community... We only want "special" personal interest stories that inspire a certain segment of our readers and draws attention to our support of "special" groups. Thanks for your call...click!

Sigh....so much for being in the news today...

"Unnatural"—even though it occurs in...nature! But please, continue to stand truth on its head to fit an agenda.

"It's not what was intended," as if you could prove such a thing! "Knowing what is right"—an excess of human ego.

Do you really not get that his situation is different from the 'many gays' that dont publicize their lifestyle? He is an athlete...a future pro. Because of that, his life will be more public than 'many gays'. His personal life will be on the internet. It may be thru public appearances/goodwill/charity events for a team. It may be thru pictures in magazines and online of him out on the town. It may be just on his wikipedia page- but his life is more public. And media outlets want to uncover these sort of stories. If I had something like this in my life, I would absolutely want to be the one to announce it versus have it announced for me. I would hope you would too...unless you enjoy having a story told about you but without you.
Furthermore, getting back to what I mentioned in my first post on this issue, athletes are the default role models for most boys in this country. Having an openly gay football player will both help younger kids feel more comfortable in their own skin, feel more comfortable on a team, and it will help others be more accepting.

When I was in high school I used 'retarded' to describe a ton of stuff. I used it to describe people, events, actions, a ton of stuff. I then dated a girl for two years with a younger sister and an aunt who both have Down Syndrome.
Yup, that basically got me to immediately drop that word from my vocab.

Call it developing empathy, call it maturing, call it whatever you like- personally knowing or even knowing of someone with something helps instill tolerance, understanding, and acceptance.
Inherent traits that single people out- skin color, overbite, ADHD, sexual orientation, physical deformity, mental retardation- simply shouldnt be made fun of. Compassion, tolerance, and acceptance need to be used. Having male athletes at the college and pro level with these inherent traits helps show youth athletes what is possible, what is acceptable, and how to treat others.

Maybe heterosexuals are allowed certain privileges because the heterosexual family is the most fundamental building block of every human society past, present and future. This isn't even religious. It's just common sense. Heterosexual families OUGHT to have privileges. They are LITERALLY building our future. Granting them things like tax credits, filing statuses, etc. isn't punishing singles, homosexuals, or any other flavor of whatever. It's just rewarding them for having and raising the people that will pay for your social security and defend your freedoms when you are too old to do so.

just like I'm quietly being...

"you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Another thesis on how little you care. We get it. You're engorged with indifference. Positively turgid with apathy. Your throbbing disinterest is obvious.

Yes it occurs in nature in several species, human beings included. Are human beings not a part of nature? What does "natural" refer to if not all things that occur in nature? You will have to introduce metaphysics into the conversation to call homosexuals "unnatural."

"Unnatural"—compared to what! Everything else that exists in nature? Seems to be quite an arbitrary distinction.

Also, all sex that does not lead to procreation is "unnatural?" I lol'd.

It would also be arbtrary to believe that rigid moral standards exist in any

natural environment. But faith does seem to be integral to human existence, and the universe doesn't seem to mind much.
