I get this from other fan base but lsu has our qb from last year. They know that we had a true freshman starting the majority of the year. They should also see many teams were beating have lost their coach or getting close. I think Lebby to lsu is click bait. That said we're improving with better talent and more staff/ experience. We're on the right track and I haven't been irrational saying one week we need to fire him and the next week saying he's the guy. We just need to do like um and extend and keep the buy out low to keep him with the price depending on how he finishes and the market, how much interest he gets. That said we need his knowledge of what um is doing and keep working towards that such as recruiting, off field staff numbers, etc.

As I posted in another thread, one half of the coaches in the Top 20 right now are in their first head coaching gig. Only 3 active coaches have won a national championship, and all 3 of them are in the first, and probably only, head coaching job.

HC experience is over rated. Their are certain leadership skills and effective head coach needs, but you can acquire those skills without a head coaching job.
That may very well be true but it has no bearing in this case. They will demand a top tier coach, period.

We moved it on Texas and they're better than MO. MO has had a really easy schedule too.
Umm, Mizzou's defense is much better than Texas. Much better. They're top 10 nationally in several categories.

No Arnett was a leap of faith and a logical hire, in hopes to keep everything continuing in the same method of operations. Everyone or at least the fans thought he would promote from with in offensively and he would call the defense from the start. Arnett either went rouge or the powers that He didn’t vet him enough and find out what his plans exactly were. If the powers that be knew what his plans were and went along with it, which I don’t see how that couldn’t be the case, then our powers that be are dumbasses and there lies our continuing problem.
Arnett and Lebby were both really awful hiring processes. The only reason to promote Arnett was to attempt to maintain continuity, and he blew up the offensive side of the ball in a year where we had tons of upper classmen with experience that were suited for an air raid offense. His promotion should have been contingent on committing to the air raid for at least a year. I can completely understand if he was unwilling to do that. Hard to hire an OC for a hear, and I can undersatnd not wanting to tie yourself to an offense you don't want. But if he wasn't willing to do that, the answer was to look for somebody else.

Lebby's process was bad and it looks like it's not going to bite us. But while he's done a good job this year and we've improved a lot, we're also really lucky that our schedule isn't as hard as it looked. If it had been, we very well could have improved a lot and gone 4-8 and it would have been hard to keep fans engaged with that.

You say its not the route we're taking then make my point for me.

Since Sherill, we have:
Croom- no HC experience
Mullen -no HC experience
Moorhead- no HC experience
Leach- HC experience
Arnett- no HC experience
Lebby- no HC experience

Not sure what you thought I meant but I'm saying we have by and large hired coaches that had no previous experience.
Wasn't JoMo HC at fordham for like 3 years? That has to account for something

LSU is looking for their Saban. The analogy for us is this is their O'Connor moment. They are done messing around. Just as we expect/demand to go to Omaha regularly in baseball, they are demanding regular playoff appearances now like Bama.
They thought Kelly was there O’Conner

If Lebby wins another game this year then he’ll get some national attention. If by some chance he pulls off two wins then we’ll be having to deal with Sexton’s extortion tactics because he’ll have him in everyone’s shortlist.
Is Sexton his agent?

My point is we don’t do that just bc we think that’s the best option. Sometimes it’s our only option.
Sometimes, but I dont think that applies for them all. You can argue that after Sherrill and Croom we were such an unattractive job that we had to go coordinator route. I'd be more inclined to believe we could have more likely gotten an experienced HC. Less so after Croom. Maybe, maybe not. It was 20 years ago and my brain struggles with that ****. But after Mullen, we could have gotten a head coach with experience but we went with SloJo. I forgot he had a couple years at Fordham, but that hardly counts and he was, as it turned out, grossly unqualified. I'd bet we could have gotten another after Leach too, but we went with the unproven commodity again.

Not trying to get into a pissing match, just that I think in some of those instances we COULD have gotten someone with real experience but opted to take a risk with a coordinator.

This is kind of my point about coaches

if we had hired Kelly it would have been a homerun hire

EPIC

But if he didn’t win at lsu how the 17 was he gonna win here?

Hiting a coach is 17ing hard. At MSU it’s harder. We have a lot better shot at hiring an up and coming assistant than we do a successful current head coach.

Les Miles, Gus, Rich Rod, etc don’t fit the mold of successful when they are no longer having success.

In hindsight we should have looked closer at fordham. He had a scholarship advantage if im not mistaken.
Yep. I've posted about that numerous times. Fordham agreed with their conference to not be eligible for the conference championship or even the CG in exchange for being the only school in their conference allowed to offer scholarships.

HUGE advantage.

Moorhead had HC experience. He was one of the hottest properties out there the cycle we hired him too. Everyone thought that was a home run hire. Hiring a coach is a crap shoot.

They're not going after an "up and comer". Their base will demand a proven head coach.
I'm not going to pretend to know the state of LSU $'s, but it can't be an overly abundance of $ to throw away. They paid the Ogre and now Kelly (sp? Kelley) and are now going to have to shell out a butt load on another coach. At some point it'll catch up to you and a "Proven HC" ain't gonna be cheap.

not only over rated, but the proven part is based on what? only 1 coach per year can win the NC, and if that is what it takes to be "Proven" then that field of candidates if very limited and the ones who do win them tend to stay put.
