What about when the Big Ten and SEC raided fellow conferences just so they could sign higher media contracts?

But sure - a player getting a couple hundred thousand dollars is the downfall of college athletics all of a sudden.

You’re right. You can’t ignore this stuff. I think that other stuff was kinda just ignored or rationalized by many fans . Kinda like how many posters on this board like to think rutgers athletes are a bunch of choir boys and real students. That we do things differently than other big time corrupt schools.
The difference between pro and college in the part were pro’s were after the money while college players played for the school. There was very little transfers and such…

I mean…. In the pros there was a time where players spent entire careers with one team. You could say they were “loyal” or they just weren’t able to move on from their contracts. Look at Pippen. Was worth way more than he was ever paid. But in those days you couldn’t force the owners hand

For the longest ncaa made million than billions of the back of these loyal “student” athletes. Pretty sure for the longest time the big time schools “paid” their way to victories.

It is not good for college sports . But it’s here and we gotta live with it . Complaining about every transfer or NIL payment is insane
I just looked up career earnings for Pippen. He made close to $108 million over his career. Cry me a river. Yes his Bulls contract was lower than what he was producing. He signed an extension early in his career for guaranteed security, giving up leverage for higher $$. Some guys do that. Ozzie Albies, for one.
College sports with annual free agency and players going to the highest bidder cannot last. It is poisoning the well. Either some sort of order will step in, or fan interest will wane.
Ehhh. Making our voices heard if we agree it’s not good can only help.
First time in two decades I’m not a season ticket holder (and direction of college sports is a big reason why)…

yup. Have to change the mindset. It’s about the name in the front of the Jersey and only for that season. After the season, they aren’t Rutgers players…they are free agents.
I have a feeling Sellers scoring record at Rutgers will stand until the end of time. 4 year players at a school (good ones, anyway) will be a thing of the past.
What's different now than what it was 30 years ago or even earlier besides the amounts of money, it's just out in the open in 2023.
Have we never the the stories that Stacy Augmon, Anderson Hunt, Larry Johnson, and Greg Anthony were getting 5 figure payouts from UNLV, the fab 5 to Michigan all got 5 figure payouts. Duke, Kentucky among other blue bloods started in the 90s, UMass/Camby, and it has always been unfairly balanced to the richer schools. Wasn't there even suggestions that something was happening in the John Wooden/UCLA dynasty era. I think college basketball still exists today.

Yeah it’s more out in the open. Poaching is more prevalent and guys jump schools now
I'll believe fan interest is waning when media revenue starts dropping and not reaching all time highs.
These companies aren't paying all this money to broadcast a dying sport that nobody is watching.
To be honest, you can blame the current crop of coaches in college basketball the last couple decades for that who freely jumped school to school for more money and better jobs after a couple of years to better their resume but players were being unfairly punished having to sitting out 1 year, or sometimes 2 years or even losing a year of eligibility to transfer from a school playing for a coach they didn't go there to play for that was one of many dominoes to fall.
Used to agree with this - but now think the opposite may be true. Talent being spread around. Look at this years final four. Miami. San Diego State, Florida Atlantic and UCONN ( a great program who was coming of a very lean few years). That is not exactly a blue blood line up.
That's what I wanna know. Is the school telling people? Is the collective telling people?
I'm pretty sure the player is not telling. Typically, people don't tell others how much money they make.....unless it's a lie.
Market dynamics, transfer portal closed except for grad transfers. So their stock rises especially when a bidding war ensues which is what happened with Cam.
The original amount floated was Georgetown and $90k. Cam was apparently offered near $300k by Miami but took slightly less to go to UConn.
Right now, it’s been floated that Mulcahy is getting interest at around $100k. The more desperate a team is to fill a slot the higher the number climbs if you have the financial backing to play that game.
