Yesterday, Kristi Noem ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans, a policy that shielded tens of thousands from deportation for 25 years. But the real story goes deeper: The United States created a closed loop.

The International Republican Institute (IRI) helped legitimize a 2009 military coup through election observations. When it decided the government was legitimate, that enabled the justification for continued investment in it through foreign aid.
𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 2: 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚
The ruling coalition itself was disastrous, filled with accusations of human right violations. From 2008 to 2020, the subemployment rate in Honduras would more than double to 80%, causing mass displacements.
Despite this and despite accusations that the foreign aid was being misappropriated by its government and going only to its supporters, the United States continued sending it hundreds of millions of dollars every year.
All this while economic conditions and poverty worsened across the board.

As the situation worsened, the U.S. quietly ramped up spending on migrant services. Refugee NGOs expanded. Border policies softened.
And now, after 15+ years of dysfunction, TPS ends. But not before it caused poverty, deaths, and upheavals.
