This Tarboro fan will be vacationing in Banner Elk this week and is itching to see some mountain football on Friday night. Any suggestions for a good competitive game within a reasonable distance?

Not a lot of options up that way. Avery and Owen could be a good game. Its at Avery in Newland which is 10-15 minutes from Banner Elk. Mitchell is playing at Polk which is going to be about a 2 hour drive depending on where you are staying in Banner Elk. You get up in those hills you could be a ways from some places.

Watauga plays at Freedom in Morganton which is an hour down hwy 181 from Banner Elk. Watauga is having a great season and Freedom is pretty solid with some really good athletes.

Not what people call mountain football but Elkin and East Wilkes could be an interesting matchup. About an hour and a half from Banner Elk.

Any of the SMC teams are going to be about 2 and a half hours away as mentioned above.

While you're in Banner Elk make sure to eat at the Painted Fish.

Get a pizza from Bella’s. Avery game could be a good one. It’s going to be cold. Hampton,TN plays at home 26 miles away from Banner Elk. Hard nose physical team.Hampton is ranked 9th in 2a in TN.

Personally if was you and on vacation you probably don't want to drive another hour or two to see a game. I would just go to the Avery - Owen game.
You might drive two hours to see what supposed to be a close game and be like the folks who drove that far for the Robbinsville-Swain game. The Avery - Owen game probably has as much potential to be a close game as any and if not only it just 13 miles or about 19 minutes.

Man forgot about Bella's. Solid spot as well. The pizza and calzones are delicious.

Puerto Nuevo is really good for mexican as well. The Bayou is a cool spot if you want something unhealthy and deep fried.

If you wanted to drive 52 miles you can go watch Elizabethton,TN play at Sullivan Central. Elizabethton is ranked 1st in 4a in TN. They are coached by Jason Witten brother Shawn Witten.

The Mitchell/Polk game should be a dandy. Two possible Tarboro opponents. Yes East Surry posters, possible but unlikely

Go to the Avery/Owen game. It's the highest place in the state you can watch a game. They have super nice facilities, and decent bbq in newland. SanDees cafe isn't bad either.

Is Newland close to West Jefferson and has the place that brings the food out and serves it in bowls and lg plates like you are at home. You serve yourself all you can eat. Maybe only seasonal.

Newland is probably an hour or so from Jefferson. Maybe and hour and a half. You're thinking of Shatley Springs though right outside of Jefferson. Similar place in Boone called Daniel Boone Inn.

Come eat at Dean's Southern Bistro in N.Wilkesboro on the way up! Great Fried Chicken, Amazing Sides, and Amazing Deserts. Check out his FB page under the restaurant name!. The restaurant has recently moved up closer to Walmart in a building that used to be a restaurant called The Carousel.

I haven't thought Shatley Springs in years the last time I ate there my oldest daughter had just turn 6 months old and we had just found out my wife was pregnant again. She turns 25 Friday. How time flies.

If you get App State tickets a good place to tailgate is up at the baseball stadium or behind Broyhill Center near baseball stadium although a steep walk back after the game. No pass, no cost, no hassell and usually a decent party crowd but always able to find a good spot without overcrowding. Another spot is the Baptist Church on King Street for 20.00 a pop and yes they allow drinking but still a pretty good walk to the stadium. Forget anywhere close to the stadium. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

Better get there early if you’re gonna party with the Baptists at App. Though fifty degrees, 100% chance of rain and twenty to forty mph wind gusts may keep the crowd down some. Tickets available online.

Newland is a great place to watch a high school football game. It can get colder then a well diggers butt, just dress warm. As far as where to eat, you'll have plenty to choose from between Banner Elk and Newland. As for the game I think it will be a good one. Everyone will be picking Owen but I think Avery has a legit shot of winning this one. If you make it to the game message me and we can meet up. Look forward to seeing you at the #mountain.

Man the weather forecast has me worried about that equalizing things. App needs a large victory thursday.

If you are in Banner elk make you a reservation at Stonewall eat you a great dry aged ribeye steak and then drive over to Newland and watch the Avery/Owen game then you don’t have a long drive back to where you are staying. I believe that this will be a very competitive game. The leaves are absolutely gorgeous this time of year and it will be nice and cold .... perfect football weather.
You could come down to Polk co. and check out our game with Mitchell but that’s a pretty good drive (hour and half) but I would just hang out in Avery co and enjoy that IMHO

Late to the party, but I'd go to the Avery game as well. They have a nice stadium and you'll get to experience the mountain weather football if nothing else. And for breakfast, Kaye's in Newland is my go-to. The guy there who works the omelet station is a hoot to talk to about sports. He's a big NC State fan too, so it's easy to rag him. From the sound of it from the rest of you guys, you can tell we all like to eat! Some great places in that part of the state. Stickboy Bread Company in Boone makes some good fresh breads daily and I think they've opened a brewery somewhere as well, but haven't been there.

I can assure you the crazy's will be out in full force up here in Boone thursday night. I would advise staying away from the tailgating at the main peacock parking lot as that is where the college students gather.
