As someone who believes Tomlin should have been at least 8 years ago I do think he'd dominate recruiting at the college level...kids and parents would love him
Don't want us to hire him but Ben isn't wrong in his assessment.

I'd be fine with Campbell - and I think he'd be just as good as the folks hired by other schools (except Kiffin) - but Mullen actually does seem like both a great fit plus realistic given he's coaching at what isn't even a Power 4 school.

Ironically, I remember a lot of talk about Mullen during the cycle when Franklin was hired.

The question I have with Mullen is does he really want back in P4 coaching? He seems content with the current gig and when he was available before UNLV he wasn't showing a lot of interest in openings. I personally think he would be solid as a hire

I think too many fans, and probably Kraft included, overestimate the power of the Penn St brand. We are a good program, not a great one. You aren't going to be able to keep someone like Chesney, who's in demand elsewhere, just waiting and in limbo for very long. Just like you aren't going to have a line of elite coaches knocking on your door the day after you fire a coach like Franklin.

Yes I understand that so he should have realized that when he was courting Sitake that he couldn't just let Chesney twist in the wind for days. He needed to put strict deadlines on Sitake as to keep Chesney warm and not make him feel like a second fiddle. At some point he needed to cut bait with Sitake who was taking too long and pivot to Chesney.

What annoys me is it is not like Sitake is Nick Saban. A good coach but not God. Kraft treated him like he was the second coming. There were fit questions and that is why Sitake probably took a long time. Kraft needed to be much more in tune to this and understand the implications with Chesney. Again, why was he so much higher on Sitake versus Chesney to begin with? That was not a correct assessment and it ends up completely burning us. Horrible mismanagement and a complete bungle.

Who's left? Daboll, Campbell......? Matt Campbell would be my choice at this late time, unless DeBoer is somehow in the picture under the radar.

Campbell would be a home run hire IMO. But I don't think they can get him. He took less money to stay where he is so his assistants could get more pay. His players took less NIL money to stay to play for him. He should have been near the top of any short list from the beginning. And maybe he was asked, and just said no.

There's a lot of evidence for the claim:

  • Getting into it with some fans at our spring game. While the game was in progress (!!!!!) no less. His players are out there hustling and working, and he's arguing with some fans who called him a "fraud." To top it off, Franklin makes sure he has the "last word" and comes across as the "good guy" by saying "Happy Birthday!" to the fans.
  • Oh wait, that's not even the first time that's happened! The end of the 2018 game with Ohio State!
  • Using his daughter as a human shield near the end of his PSU regime.
  • The constant (it must have been a dozen times total!) appeals to the administration for a raise and contract extension. Including this past summer, when he went around his bosses back after his boos (correctly) told him NO.
  • The story from March 2020 and the pandemic, when Franklin was holed up in his place in Telluride. He wanted some free weights: so he STOLE some 25-pound dumbbells from the community gym. And then made it out like it was some other guy's fault, because that other guy used the gym too much. A much easier solution: Franklin and his 8-figure-net-worth could have ordered a few $30 dumbbells off of Amazon.
  • The **** with Maryland, as you said. For goodness sake, get over it. Maryland was 15+ years ago!
  • His hypocricy in leaving Vanderbilt. While at Vandy he chastised a recruit for flipping from Vandy to UGA. Yet it was perfectly fine when all his early PSU guys flipped too. Just be consistent dude.

I find it comical that so many writers and posters are still trying to justify the Franklin firing. He was fired and it was time. Meanwhile, any chance you might hire a coach before next year’s opening game on September 5th Pat?

Campbell had been Josh Pate's choice since day 1. It always seems as though this guy is an afterthought each year, I can't understand why. No clue if he would actually be interested in leaving Ames.

I think Mullen would be a pretty good choice. Outside of one year he's been solid. And he's a PA guy.

Of course he's probably not even in consideration.

Dan Mullen himself has stated that he does not like recruiting. Would not hire him at PSU. Here is one of a variety of direct quotes from Dan during his time at Florida: “I hate recruiting. I absolutely hate it. … I love coaching football. I love being on the field, I love being in the meeting rooms, I love practice, I love the games. Recruiting is the worst part of the job, by far.”
This is why he cannot hold a power football job like Florida. As you know, our next coach is going to have to love recruiting and love going into the portal . Dan would be a very hard pass for me.
