I would go for Dan Mullen before Rees or Daboll. Not sure how you pass on Hartline, Stein or Chesney for that matter and go after Rees. The other supposed options are Daboll and Tommy Rees. Campbell would be a gift from God!

Campbell is a good college coach and very highly regarded in coaching circles. Iowa State is very tough to have success at.Campbell, Daboll? For f*ck’s sake.
I think Campbell would be enough to save his bacon in the short termIt’s going to be so ridiculous when Kraft, if he’s still at PSU, introduces the new coach, if he actually hires someone. It will amount to, “I am very pleased to announce my 67th choice for the next head coach at Penn State…”

I'd have been satisfied with Campbell from day 1.I think Campbell would be enough to save his bacon in the short term
As someone who believes Tomlin should have been at least 8 years ago I do think he'd dominate recruiting at the college level...kids and parents would love himYou've got to be kidding. I wouldn't give you a wrinkled $2 bill for Tomlin. He's stuck on a defensive system that hasn't worked for nearly 18 years. His offense (check out the passing charts for the Steelers) don't believe in passing the ball anywhere near the middle of the field or more than 8 yards down field. No, Tomlin is a washed up fraud. He was never a good football coach.
Tomlin would do one thing...he would have everyone pining for the good old CJF days.
No one been hired and not a single game has been played and you have already given up? Jeez…We could be on here 10 years from now with 10 crappy seasons in a row and knuckleheads will still be saying Franklin had to go. You only get rid of one coach to make your program better…it’s not looking good so far.
Are you supposed to be one of the “adults?” Lord have mercy…Oh, the ones who told us it was so easy to win 10 games a year..... all you had to do was put on a PSU uniform and you're guaranteed 10 wins easy. You mean they're the naive, loudmouth a-holes that should just STFU with their FDS problems and let the adults here discuss PSU football??? You don't say.
I can't find it. Could you post a link?

The question I have with Mullen is does he really want back in P4 coaching? He seems content with the current gig and when he was available before UNLV he wasn't showing a lot of interest in openings. I personally think he would be solid as a hireI'd be fine with Campbell - and I think he'd be just as good as the folks hired by other schools (except Kiffin) - but Mullen actually does seem like both a great fit plus realistic given he's coaching at what isn't even a Power 4 school.
Ironically, I remember a lot of talk about Mullen during the cycle when Franklin was hired.
He'll spin it as "we were true to our process and it paid off by hiring the best coach who is the best fit..."
Yes I understand that so he should have realized that when he was courting Sitake that he couldn't just let Chesney twist in the wind for days. He needed to put strict deadlines on Sitake as to keep Chesney warm and not make him feel like a second fiddle. At some point he needed to cut bait with Sitake who was taking too long and pivot to Chesney. He tried and failed. Put yourself in Chesney's shoes. How long are you going to let Kraft string you along, making it clear you are not his priority to hire? Coaches have egos, if they know they are second (or worse) fiddle to someone else they aren't going to tolerate it for long. And as signing day approaches, the patience for that proportionally disappears. I don't blame Chesney for eventually saying "screw this," and just going somewhere else where he was the #1 guy.
I think too many fans, and probably Kraft included, overestimate the power of the Penn St brand. We are a good program, not a great one. Arguably top 10, definitely 15, but with some factors that will immediately rub some the wrong way such as being in the middle of nowhere PA. You aren't going to be able to keep someone like Chesney, who's in demand elsewhere, just waiting and in limbo for very long. Just like you aren't going to have a line of elite coaches knocking on your door the day after you fire a coach like Franklin.
XMany of these moron FDS trolls (not real PSU fans) deserve an empty-suit clown like Kraft. It's the "real" PSU fans (especially the ones with vested interest in PSU, like Alumni) that don't deserve this a-hole and the damage he is doing to our program.
When do we just give it to Terry? I don't want that to happen but feel it could be inevitable at this stage.I'd be fine with Campbell - and I think he'd be just as good as the folks hired by other schools (except Kiffin) - but Mullen actually does seem like both a great fit plus realistic given he's coaching at what isn't even a Power 4 school.

Hire Matt Campbell now.
There are posts in this thread that sum up the entire article. It's on the front page of sc.ckm under PSU sports. No one else has trouble finding it.I can't find it. Could you post a link?

The statecollege.com article makes some good points but it also suffers from the some very weak analysis
- A hand-picked staff of coordinators and assistants - So what? Every coach has this luxury
- What was once viewed as the best offensive and defensive coordinator duo in the country - This is complete hyperbole. AK is a mediocre OC at best and Knowles won because he had to change his D due to how bad OSU looked at Oregon last year and largely won due to having 5* & 4* talent at almost every position
- The highest paid coordinator in the history of college football, poached from a conference rival where he led the No. 1 defense to a national championship just one season ago - See above
- A top-10 roster in talent, based on the 247Sports team talent composite - OK based on recruiting rankings and not performance and development. Also that means that there other teams better in individual ranking
- A senior, five-star quarterback - that was in the wrong system and had mental mistakes in the biggest games he played in
- One of the top running back rooms, offensive lines and secondaries in the country - Running backs: true, O-line: average, Secondary: Inconsistent and leaning a new system for the 1st time
- Three proven transfer wide receivers who totaled 2,446 yards last season - Against weaker competition in every case
- Self-proclaimed “alignment” with university president Neeli Bendapudi and Kraft - If alignment, why the need to go over Kraft's head?
- Top-tier facilities - Yup, check
- Top-tier NIL - sounds like they maximized it for the first time
- A Charmin-soft nonconference slate - absolutely soft
- A manageable Big Ten slate - I still had them losing to Oregon and O-State this year even if everything was setup perfectly
- A top-10 matchup at night, in a White Out in Beaver Stadium, off a bye week, against a team traveling across the country that stayed in Altoona the night before - The overall record in White Out games in not exactly lopsided
- A No. 2 ranking entering the season - I would have probably put them around 4 but my expectation was 10-2 and not making the B1G CCG but making it to the CFP as an at-large and winning one game
- A committed fanbase that sold out every home game and traveled well to road games - Check
Yeah, and apparently the the perceived supply of coaches is outstripping the demand for this job. It isn't as attractive as many would like to believe.he has to want the job…
Exactly what I was going to say. His body of work is impressive so far but no one knows his ceiling yet.I'd have been satisfied with Campbell from day 1.
Truly pathetic. Were you one of the Eagles’ fans who threw snowballs at Santa Claus years ago?Yes. It comes with the $85 million dollars and yes he put her in that situation… no one else.
Wow.Toughen up, buttercup. The "personal abuse" Franklin faced here was trivial.
James "the professional aggrieved victim" Franklin is soft.
And absolutely --- he used his daughter as a human shield.
Campbell would be a home run hire IMO. But I don't think they can get him. He took less money to stay where he is so his assistants could get more pay. His players took less NIL money to stay to play for him. He should have been near the top of any short list from the beginning. And maybe he was asked, and just said no.Exactly what I was going to say. His body of work is impressive so far but no one knows his ceiling yet.
And lots more BSYep. I'd go further and label Franklin an "entitled, full-of-himself a**hole who loves to play the role of an aggrieved victim."
There's a lot of evidence for the claim:
There's 24 other bullet points I could write too ...............
- Getting into it with some fans at our spring game. While the game was in progress (!!!!!) no less. His players are out there hustling and working, and he's arguing with some fans who called him a "fraud." To top it off, Franklin makes sure he has the "last word" and comes across as the "good guy" by saying "Happy Birthday!" to the fans.
- Oh wait, that's not even the first time that's happened! The end of the 2018 game with Ohio State!
- Using his daughter as a human shield near the end of his PSU regime.
- The constant (it must have been a dozen times total!) appeals to the administration for a raise and contract extension. Including this past summer, when he went around his bosses back after his boos (correctly) told him NO.
- The story from March 2020 and the pandemic, when Franklin was holed up in his place in Telluride. He wanted some free weights: so he STOLE some 25-pound dumbbells from the community gym. And then made it out like it was some other guy's fault, because that other guy used the gym too much. A much easier solution: Franklin and his 8-figure-net-worth could have ordered a few $30 dumbbells off of Amazon.
- The **** with Maryland, as you said. For goodness sake, get over it. Maryland was 15+ years ago!
- His hypocricy in leaving Vanderbilt. While at Vandy he chastised a recruit for flipping from Vandy to UGA. Yet it was perfectly fine when all his early PSU guys flipped too. Just be consistent dude.
But who would be available to help Kaytron up after he was knocked to the ground out of bounds if Kraft wasn’t there to help him up?I’ve been saying for the past few years they shouldn’t fire Franklin unless they had someone better lined up. That doesn’t take 20/20 hindsight, that just takes a moderate amount of business sense. And we don’t know what transpired between Kraft and Franklin that may have made Franklin’s relationship run its course. The AD’s job should not involve day to day involvement in coaching the athletic teams.
I find it comical that so many writers and posters are still trying to justify the Franklin firing. He was fired and it was time. Meanwhile, any chance you might hire a coach before next year’s opening game on September 5th Pat?The statecollege.com article makes some good points but it also suffers from the some very weak analysis

Agree. At the point Matt Cam is a HOMERUN. Iowa State will fight like crazy trying to keep him like the other candidates with a Huge Raise so be prepared Kraft.Hire Matt Campbell now.

I think Mullen would be a pretty good choice. Outside of one year he's been solid. And he's a PA guy.Mullen is a quick fix solution for decades of poor QB development
Dan Mullen himself has stated that he does not like recruiting. Would not hire him at PSU. Here is one of a variety of direct quotes from Dan during his time at Florida: “I hate recruiting. I absolutely hate it. … I love coaching football. I love being on the field, I love being in the meeting rooms, I love practice, I love the games. Recruiting is the worst part of the job, by far.”I'd be fine with Campbell - and I think he'd be just as good as the folks hired by other schools (except Kiffin) - but Mullen actually does seem like both a great fit plus realistic given he's coaching at what isn't even a Power 4 school.
