MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 13, 2017) – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team resumes competition at Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) foe Nebraska on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m. EST, at the Nebraska Rifle Range.

“For the majority of the team, this is a new range and a new place to compete, and that’s always exciting,” Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. “There will be challenges in a new environment, too. We want to be professional and approach this weekend as business as usual with the hopes of performing our best.”

The Mountaineers (2-0, 1-0 GARC) are 12-3 all-time against the Huskers, who shoot in their first regular-season match Saturday. In their last meeting, No. 2 WVU earned a 4710-4646 victory over No. 8 Nebraska on Jan. 22, 2017, in Morgantown.

WVU returns to action following a stellar 4731-4683 victory over No. 5 Ohio State in its home opener at the WVU Rifle Range on Sept. 30. The team’s aggregate score topped its 2016-17 season-high of 4726 and was nine shots short of matching the program’s NCAA record score of 4740.

“Individually, I think everyone has little things to take from that match, probably more on the smallbore side,” Hammond added. “Obviously, air rifle was a huge success. I want us to keep working hard and to find ways to get better.

“We have to manage our expectations this weekend. Ohio State was a really great day. We hope to have more days like that, where everyone shoots really well all on the same day. It won’t always happen, but I think our standard continues to move up. We have to not focus on outcomes or records, and instead work on our performances and the day-to-day.”

The Mountaineers swept the Buckeyes in both disciplines, shooting an NCAA record 2390 air rifle and 2341 smallbore. Sophomore Milica Babic earned the individual victories, matching her career-high smallbore score of 589 and shooting a season-best 598 air rifle.

WVU boasts an aggregate season average of 4717 and shows season averages of 2381 air rifle and 2336 smallbore. Junior Ginny Thrasher paces the Mountaineers in smallbore (586 average) and air rifle (596.5 average).

Nebraska opened the 2017-18 season shooting an exhibition match at the NCAA Test Event at The Citadel on Sept. 24. The Huskers finished third on the day with a 4631 mark.
