So many of the losses in the JF era -- in addition to his baffling in-game coaching gaffes — came down to our players failing to make the game-sealing play when the opportunity was there.
PSU could have closed that game out with one more first down. IU had all 11 guys within 5 yards of the LOS to stop the run. A pop pass over the middle would have ended it but we ran, punted, and gave Indy a chance with 2 minutes remaining.

I know Franklin's sphincter got tight late in these games. Was this Smith or was it Kotelnicki?

Weird we're going back to the first half
If anything, down 10 forced us to open things up which is why we played better. Not that the fumble was a positive but not in the top 5 reasons we lost. Up 24-20--the first half isn't really a factor with less than 2 minutes left.
Both halves matter and yes that was gigantic play in the game. You can’t have those errors when trying to beat #2 team. It’s not the only reason they lost but was huge negative play

Just bad situational awareness all around at the end:

2:09 left in the game, for for a first down. Incomplete pass or sack, you’re still getting to 2 min TO on the punt.

Burning TOs on defense.

Jailbreak blitz on the TD play after doing it the play before.

Grunk burning a TO instead of spiking the ball. Now you can’t use the middle of the field to get 12-15 yards for FG range

We were straight panicking on defense the second they picked up that 1st first down. Out of alignment, rushing guys on and off late, etc. you could see that TD coming from a mile away. Kind of wish they took a TO early in the drive to ******* settle down even though ordinarily you’d want to save it

Well, that fumble didn't help but yes.

Exactly. We are a gutless program. How about Durant celebrating after his sack on the last series when Indiana was in hurry up. He didn't even get lined up. Clowns.
Zane dancing around like a clown when the heisman favorite is running the hurry up is the 2025 PSU football season in a nutshell. Team drank the preseason rat poison.

PSU up 24-20 with the ball late in the 4th quarter. iu with no timeouts. Key 3rd down play for PSU. Get a 1st down and run out the clock. Grunkemeyer throws to the tight end well behind the STICKS. o_O . The second the ball was thrown, you knew PSU was not getting the 1st down. It had no chance.

😞
IU played all 11 within 5 yds of LOS. A quick pass over the middle gets us a 1st down and the game but the staff lacked the courage.

They finally played with more fire and pride after Singleton's long run in the 3rd. If they would have played like that all year, things could have been different.

That said, the coaching staff again turtled up on O giving the ball back to Indiana late and the D played soft coverage that allowed Indiana to go right down the field to take the lead. Throw in some more nonsense with wasting the last time out, players celebrating plays instead of being in position for the next snap, etc and it was another week of cautious, frustrating, and at times incompetent football.

He did follow that up with something like everyone does at this time of the year . Cig is annoying unless he’s winning games for your school .
True but the real definition of a program gutted with a lack of players was PSU 2012. He should have common sense not to say that given it was basically one player

I jokingly put this in another thread a week or so ago, but it is indeed time for the Tony Stark "Clean Slate" protocol. The lack of focus and discipline, along with the indifference to excellence are obvious. At times you simply have to start over, as opposed to tweaking an already compromised situation.

We actually went play action and threw the ball. Indiana did a good job at staying home and not selling out on the run.
