Mental health and wellness doesn’t give a damn about that. If it did, Chuck Knoblach would’ve been able to throw a baseball, David Duval would’ve been able to hit a golf ball. They both were in the prime of their career. Mental health doesn’t discriminate.

And being the GOAT doesn't give a damn about Mental Health and wellness. You need to be available to perform, if not, someone is going to take your place. Which is, literally, what just happened with Suni taking Gold.

Mental health discriminated against the mentally weak. Like Simone and Osaka.

Suni won the gold. She didn’t supplant Biles status. There is a big difference.

You are just a moron. Do everyone a favor and try your own vault. Maybe we will get lucky and you will on your head. I can only hope someone will bad mouth your daughter like you are these young ladies. Karma is a ***** and so are you.

She is expected to earn up to $165,000 from Olympics alone. That doesn’t count any endorsements or income from Social media. She just left Nike for a company called Athleta which she is an investor/owner. She has a net worth of $6 million dollars. Her income will only go up because of these Olympics.

You are what the record states. I don't think Suni has surpassed Biles in any means.. but what this did, as I've said numerous times, is open the door for someone else.

Had Simone competed in these Olympics, it's an open and shut case as to who the current GOAT Gymnast is. But there's a little shred of doubt now.

Lee winning the gold is awesome. Her story with her father is a great story. Happy for her!
Her beam routine was crazy. I don't know what any of the terms are when she was spinning around fell backwards. Looked done for and she somehow managed to pop back up.

Biles record is glowing and still says she is the best ever. This doesn’t show as a loss. She is still undefeated since 2013. One could argue Lee won because Biles was a good teammate and stepped alway when she was unable to perform.

Uh, it certainly isn't a win. Every medal that Simone DOESN'T win, is a medal someone else does. Simone is not undefeated. Maybe in the technical definition.. but history now remember these Olympics as one that others won medals..

In a perfect world mental health issues don't exist, and they don't so something so cruel and timely as to knock someone out of their sport after training religiously for 4 year. But it is what it is. You can't necessarily claim to be the greatest if you can't compete.

You think she's going to make $10-15M this year? I think you're overestimating her value. I think she's in the $2M range this year
We can put a pin in this and check back. My 10-15 estimate was not necessary in a calendar year but deals based off this olympics that may be over the next 3-4 years.

And history remembers what Biles does when she participated. That is her world champioships, Olympic medals, and never being below someone on the podiums for the medals when she has been able to compete. Michael Jordan can’t compete today. Does that mean he isn’t the greatest? Raphael Nadal or Roger Federer have dropped out of tournaments. Does that mean one of those isn’t the greatest.

Had Jordan quit in the middle of the finals because of a mental block, his legacy would have been damaged.

False. He quit in the middle of his career because of his mental health and stress. He left for 3 years. Did that damage his legacy?
He left for a season and a half after his dad was murdered. Not in the middle of the finals.

And he had just won the title. And yes, had he stayed and won 8-straight titles his legacy would be more impressive.

if you want to say that Biles legacy would be more impressive if she hadn’t dropped out, I probably would agree with that. You aren’t though. You are saying her dropping out means she isn’t the GOAT. You are holding her to different standards than you are other athletes. Why is that?

If you look through my original posts (not the ones trolling you), I said she - at her peak - was probably the best female gymnast ever. Then I said that she made the right move to drop out considering she got the yips. Then I said that this damaged her legacy compared to if she had competed and won. So I think we agree on all that.

Where I do think we have a disagreement is this. I am not holding Jordan to a lower standard. Quitting / retiring in the offseason - whether it be to age / mental health / injury / the yips - is different than quitting during the world finals of what you compete in. And the yips is actually different than an injury or real mental illness. Mastering the mental side of a sport is key.

But there's only so many opprotunities when you're an Olympic athlete. Unfortunately, Simone Biles basically dropped an entire Olympics. That opens the door for someone else to make a statement. Or maybe no one does.

It just blows my mind that an athlete can totally bail on the Olympics and some people think that has ZERO implications on her legacy. Not one.

To be the GOAT, you have to compete at the biggest stage. We'll see what Simone does from here. Maybe this is a one time thing. Or maybe it's not and her career, at this level, is more or less over.

Ha, and there it is.. I knew the other side would turn this into a gender/race thing.

I don't want to hear about how enraged our side is, when you guys attempt to virtue signal.

You are right. She is 24. Her career is probably over in regards to the Olympics. To me that is what makes what she did even more impressive. She said she was not able to perform in what she probably knew was her last Olympics. She has answered the call in every single competition prior to this one on the biggest of stages. Her record since 2013 proves it. She has earned the right to step away from this Olympics if her mental health wasn’t where it needed to be. To step away in what you know is more than likely your last Olympics is even more impressive and should be applauded rather than condemned like many in this thread want to do.

This is the issue I have. The yips should not be conflated with mental health. It's mental, yes, but it's not like depression or being bi-polar.
Where did you get your psychology degree? The yips can often be the sign of something else. Don’t forget Simone Biles was abused by Larry Nassar. She has been open about her mental health struggles as a result. Simply because you think the yips are a minor thing, doesn’t mean it is. They could be the manifestation of something much bigger. These yips aren’t like a golfer with the yips. These yips actually could mean the difference in being able to walk any longer or death. For far too long, gymnasts (and many athletes) haven’t been able to speak out about their health, mental or physical. Kerri strug and Dominique Moceanu in Atlanta in 1996 come to mind. Also there was a Russian gymnast who was made to come back too soon from a broken leg. As a result, she missed a flip and broke her neck and was paralyzed. Simone Biles has shown it’s ok to say I’m not ok and can’t go. Much like the shut up and dribble crowd for basketball, you need to realize that she isn’t there for you. She is there for herself and her teammates. IF Her teammates didn’t have an issue with her decision, then why should you?

So that's my question here. Lets say this was her last Olympics. And she didn't even compete in this one. Doesn't that hurt her legacy a bit? A "what could have been" scenario? It feels like you and others are just giving her a pass, saying "well, she would have won anyways".. but she didn't. And I don't mean hurting her image or the courage it took. These are two different things.

Nobody thinks it was wrong for her to step away, and no one is saying it wasn't a difficult decision to go through, or can understand the pressure she faces..

She can be a champion for mental illness, while also *maybe* not being the GOAT. These aren't mutually exclusive. Unfortunately, you don't get to walk away with an injury and still have the accolades. Derrick Rose was on his way to being one of the great PGs we had ever seen, but his career derailed because of an injury. And therefore, as unfortunate as it is to say, his legacy suffered.

The Olympics isn't a charity,

I never once said she would have won anyway. Her status as the GOAT is based on what she has done. At this point, no one has achieved the accolades she has. She has earned every single one she got. Those previous championships don’t disappear because of this one Olympics. That is why she is the GOAT.

Saying this Olympics hurt her legacy or at the least her legacy would have been much better if she was able to compete is fair. It also isnt the same thing as saying because of these Olympics she lost her position as the GOAT because she couldn’t compete. Who knocked her off the top? Who did enough in these Olympics to bypass her accomplishments? Who before her now magically has more accomplishments even though they didn’t going into these game because she didn’t compete?

Make your case for the person who has overtaken her as the best ever? Give me a name and reason. People keep saying she can’t be the GOAT but no one has said who the GOAT is because Biles was unable to compete. Let’s hear your argument.
