Mostly awesome start of the season for all locals. NJD maybe over performing a bit, NYR maybe under a bit. I’ll say it again - NYI gets in…watch out. If only PHI could flip flop with CAR, my dream of seeing all 4 locals in playoffs would materialize, haha.

Looking at PIT and WAS toward the bottom of the table - the changing of the guard is in motion.

Marino has completely stabilized the D corps and allowed Severson to play his way down to a bottom 6 pairing and eventual trade. That has been a huge upgrade along with Vanecek playing so well. The offense has been there the past couple of years.
I don't think we trade Severson if we're playoff bound.

Someone has to be traded with Hughes and Nemec waiting in the wings

Can Hughes play after his season is over ?

Fitz in a recent interview when asked about adding players at the deadline said he wasn't really a big fan of doing that because it's harder for a player (even a vet) to come in cold 3/4s into the season and mesh with a new team, if he feels that why about a veteran I imagine he's not going to be big on putting someone as young as Luke into the lineup this year.

Found the interview:

"As he mentioned to Emily Kaplan of ESPN, it is against his own philosophy to try to bring in a rental for a few months as the Devils continue to be a consistent playoff team.

“I believe you build a team over the summer versus over the trade deadline,” Fitzgerald said. “I was a trade deadline acquisition twice. One time I left two young boys behind , the other time I left three young boys behind. It’s really hard on the player. I was also in Pittsburgh when we acquired James Neal midseason. He tried, but it was just too quick of an ask and he couldn’t do what he needed to do. When he was able to stay the summer and get work in with guys like Evgeni Malkin, you saw a much better version of him the following year.”

Not even when the player’s own brother is already in the locker room?

Maybe Palat comes back in March

Yes Severson has always been a liability with his turnovers in the D zone. Danakyo[sp] has always been up his ***.

I think so as isn’t that what happened with Jimmy Vesey in his first go around with the Rangers?
Charlie McAvoy played for BU in the NCAA tournament in 2017 and then joined the Bruins for the playoffs a week or so later.

Damon is -131 in his career and even -2 for this season despite the level at which the Devils are playing. I think he needs to be moved for draft picks at the very least.

I am amazed at the ability of Severson to maintain a roster spot for so long when he is an outright liability. He has sucked for years and yet he remains in the lineup night after night. In a league as competitive as the NHL, he is an anomaly to be able to perform as poorly as he has and yet he continues to hold down a spot. Trade him for some defensive prospects and start developing them now. Addition by subtraction if nothing else.

Who replaces him now?

Bahl doesn’t bring back anything.

By himself of course not.

A 6’6” 22 year old defenseman is a great piece to have.

He will require more picks to be included, holz will require less picks to be included.

But they’re the two roster players to keep an eye on

My son played on a team where the juniors loved the guy who fit this profile. The “star” in their eyes was just another dime a dozen forward. But the big guy…

All about the measurables.

I like Severson as a player, but if he is not traded by the deadline Fitz will lose another NHL player for nothing. He is 31, and the NJD have plenty of defensemen in the system.

Trading Holtz would be ridiculous. I would rather trade a hot Tatar who is on a hot streak playing over his head.

Trade high, buy low.

If the Devils remain playoff bound, you keep your veteran players as rentals.

You don’t trade your veterans if your buyers.

No reason to trade anyone but prospects if we’re in contention. We have ALOT of prospects

I disagree because he can easily be replaced by the defensive talent in the minors. After the season you are not giving him a contract if you are smart in a cap league.

He is 31, the Devils have multiple players in the minors who could fill his role and have a higher ceiling than he does. In a cap league especially, you don't offer him a long-term contract if you are smart. That means you likely lose him to free agency for nothing if he is not traded.

You don’t bring up players in minors when you’re in contention.

If we’re in contention we won’t be “sellers”…which is what trading severson is. Selling

The NJD have some who are ready. This is not a situation that is cut and dry. You can be buyers and sellers at the same time. Damon is 3rd pair not 1st pair. You either trade him, or lose him for nothing like Parise and Clarkson. I would rather get something and play one of the good young players on the 3rd line. Besides I think there will be a market for him, so we could maximize the return.

Realistically this is not a Cup year. The team still needs pieces.

I just respectfully disagree. He will be the typical rental at the deadline…not signed for next season…we aren’t getting a maximum return for him. More prospects which won’t help at all…

Now if he’s packaged with other prospects…to maximize the return I can certainly see that. But trading him straight up will do more harm than good on a team overperforming. You don’t shake things up

I always saw him as part of a package. The draft in '23 is very deep, we already traded a high pick for VV the goalie. I think under the circumstances of a building team, trade him and get more assets.

Now time will tell. Given Fitzgerald's track record, we probably keep him, and lose him for nothing.
