They didn't start with them either. And every major sport keeps changing the rule for overtime because they suck.Nhl hasn’t had ties in ages bruh

With decent goaltending, this can be a great reg season team. Concerns with size and toughness come playoff time are real, but there is time and assets to fix that.If the Devils get above average goaltending and continue to outshoot their opponents they will be tough to play cuz they can really skate.
Also, Wood better learn to fight or don’t drop the mitts
With overtime being so far removed from real hockey now with 3 on 3, I'm actually fine with the losing team getting a point because the way I see it, the actual hockey game ended in a tie, so each team gets a point. Personally I'd scrap the shootout completely and make overtime 5 on 5, but if we're going to have these gimmicks that I don't consider to be part of an actual hockey game, then each team gets 1 point for tying the game, and then they have 3 on 3 and shootout for an additional point. However, what makes the current points format awful is that winning an actual hockey game isn't any more rewarding than tying and then winning a 3 on 3 or shootout, so there isn't much of an incentive to try to win in regulation. No one should get a point for a 0-0 tie. I mean...seriously? The game should just end...no OT, no points. If they are going to stick with this messed up system where the losing team gets a free extra point just for getting to OT, they should at least have some standards.
you could have a team that ties every game and even if they only win half of the shootouts, they'd have 123 points, which is usually enough to win the Presidents Trophy.
This is an excellent illustration of the mathematical abomination that is this point system. Now, to be clear, the primary intent of my post was simply to rag on the Rangers for not even scoring a goal last night (no the 3 on 3 one doesn't count). The devils have scored what, 12 in the last 2 games?....maybe we can lend you guys a few...ha ha! Clearly they should not have gotten 2 points for that game, or maybe even one. But then again I tend to believe that the Rangers should never get any points for any games, so perhaps I'm not the best arbiter. Honestly, I guess there is something fun in the fact that the NHL chose to completely throw out the laws of math, and common sense, and just wing it as far as points go...if baseball tried to do something like that all the old purists would die of a collective heart attack on the spot, which might be fun to watch. Anyway it's nice to see that the division is finally reverting back to it's proper order with the Devils at the top, the Rangers in the middleish (just give it a week) and the Islanders....well, sorry guys, but back to the bottom for you.
I'm perfectly prepared to get dunked on in a few weeks.Thinking this one won't age well, but time will tell.

Yep imagine if they made a rule in the 80s saying you couldn't stop behind the net to make a pass because Gretzky was too good at setting up goals that way. Bobby Clarke was the big proponent of this trapezoid rule because at the time he had 16 games a year against either Brodeur or DiPietro, but of course he had no problem with goalies playing the puck when he had Hextall in his net.Go back to the old way, enough with gimmicks. While I'm at it, scrap the damn trapezoid. Marty is not coming back at 50, and having goalies play the puck can be fun. I hate it when leagues outlaw skill.
First the NFL had the Mel Bount Rule
Year's later the NHL puts in the Martin Brodeur Rule.

OT is fine, the idea that OT games are worth three total points while non-OT games are two is moronic. Teams play for the guaranteed point too much, and it is hard for teams to make a run up the standings when the teams they are chasing keep getting the loser points.Old school? Not really. Simplicity, efficiency are things that make for good sporting events. There is nothing wrong with a tie. It's a stupid US thing that a tie is wrong.
Using the Rangers -Flyers game as an example of teams not deserving a point is foolish. This is an excellent illustration of the mathematical abomination that is this point system. Exactly. Look what they did to "fix" the MLB All Star game. Dumbest thing ever. No problem with a tie regular season. NFL put in an overtime and there are still ties anyway.Outside of the playoffs (where you do need a winner) I’m fine with the old way with the score being the score at the end of 60 minutes…win, lose or tie. And move on to the next game.
Rangers met a buzz saw last night.
It's early, but the Bruins seem legit; size, speed, talent, team grit and depth. Oh, and they are still missing pieces.
Again, very early, but they will be a tall order on most nights.
Just yesterday, I made the +600 bet for the Devils to win their division this year. Good risk/reward at this point imo
All true but I think the odds are about 20-30%, which makes this bet worth it. There's also a chance Palat comes back this season I believe, and you never know the moves NJ might make before the trade deadline. Based on the quality of their wins this year so far (15% of the season) and the post game comments from some of their opposition, this team could be special. Again, they don't have to win the Cup for this bet to hit.I can’t see it happening especially with Palat out for the regular season and Blackwood always injured

What happened to Palat?
They can definitely win it without Palat, don't get me wrong, losing him is a big hit, but not that big of a hit that it will cripple them, they do have good depth.I can’t see it happening especially with Palat out for the regular season and Blackwood always injured

Or was Lindgren’s just as bad?
